AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

AIBU?

after a broken leg its advised by NHS staff to use crutches, not everyone needs to do this though

I didn't say everyone needs to, just that they are clearly not bad for your feet.

I'm just after going to a podiatrist who specifically recommended trainers.

Oddly enough my kids went to an excellent nursery with no uniform and yet also managed to have excellent manners from an early age. And of course they too looked gorgeous - and were comfortable.

Trainers are actually not very good for your feet.

Of course it does. How many times do you see kids wearing suits and ties causing mayhem on the streets?

I've seen kids having fights, generally causing mayhem in their school uniforms, all wearing blazers and ties. If someone is going to behave badly their clothes don't change that.

Yes aged 2, the school year they will turn 3.

I don't think I ever felt like I was doing something awful putting my boys in a shirt and my daughter in a blouse and pinafore. They would wear similar to a party anyway so it wasn't that alien.

They looked gorgeous and also had excellent manners from early on.

Little children need clothes they can be comfortable in and play in.

Manners have nothing to do with clothes.

'They look gorgeous' makes it all about you, not what's right for a tiny child.

So you've made yourself the dictator of others people's shoe choice for their children? What's it to you what shoes other people's children wear to school? You can dictate what YOUR child wears, but not what others people's children wear! The school "allows" the wearing of trainers, it doesn't mandate them. If you don't want your child to wear them, then don't buy them. Simple. Don't try and push your wants on to every other parent. Too many people are too invested in others people's business these days!

Sod standards. Overly restrictive blazer and tie combos with no permission to remove in hot weather combined with dress shoes is crackers for full day wear.

Bring on the drop in standards with trainers! Our school allows joggers and a hoody … comfortable kids can learn better.

Agree.

Being allowed to wear trainers is long overdue. They are good for the feet, comfortable and versatile.

What people wear has no bearing on their manners. Surely you can see that.

Their language skills would benefit from it, so why not.!

Our school has strict uniform. The head wears a skirt and blazer. They start uniform aged 2 and the girls wear knee high white socks until 14. Boys in shorts and shirts, no trainers, no silly hair cuts. They look incredibly neat and well presented. The parents wear dresses / chinos and shirts to sports day/ prize giving/ the Christmas concert. You can see everyone understands that how your present yourself reflects your attitude.

When I see children in trainers, half shaved heads, parents in tracksuit bottoms etc. It just gives of a sense of not caring. You don't carry yourself the same way or show discipline and hard work when you look scruffy.

Im not sure who you think you are? Teenagers wear what they wear. I’m 30 now. I went to a school that decided I have to wear black underwear to which I replied “you gonna pull my skirt up and check”?
yoh don’t get to decide what kids wear after 7/8 years old. That’s where you allow the kid to develop a personality and hope that the world (I.e. you.) don’t beat them down at every turn. They are already being told in how many ways by their peers that their body/style offends them. As long as it’s not skimpy skirts and low cut/crop tops, why are you bothered?

Edited

What a load of rubbish. Are kids buying their own clothes from 7/8? With what money?

As long as they are at school they should obey the school rules in terms of clothing, and as long as they live under their parents roof, they should obey their parents in what they wear.

Clothes are not a substitute for a personality. Those that think they are generally have no personality.

Nike Air Max?

My kids school allowing this too.
The other option was equally expensive.

Don’t think shoes and coats should be constructed part of the uniform

I hope your DC never end up working in something like software development or any other tech business. They'd die of shock.

Has Oona visited us from the 1940s?

Its all very Enid Blyton

Oona also thinks it's jolly bad form to hang your pants outside to dry.
