To be emotionally attached to a car

Lifeisforliving12 · 07/06/2026 21:32

I know I’m probably being unreasonable but my husband is thinking of changing his car. We’ve had lots of road trips and fun with it and it’s more of a lifestyle car. I really don’t like the car he’s thinking of swapping it for and have said so. Third world problem I know but I’m genuinely upset that this car and lifestyle may be changing. I also think I’m also possibly bordering being controlling which I hate. Has anyone else become very emotionally attached to a car. For context no deal has been done but the thought of it possibly going is upsetting.

Not unreasonable at all. A couple of mine have had to be collected for scrap and I couldn't watch.

Iheartmysmart · 27/06/2026 21:39

I’m absolutely dreading the day my car needs replacing as there isn’t a single new car on the market that I like. He’s an 18 year old Smart ForTwo convertible, as basic as they come but enormous fun to drive. We’re off on another camping adventure next weekend. Hopefully I’ll have quite a few more years yet as he’s only done 28k miles.

MirrorMirror1247 · 27/06/2026 21:34

I get it. We have experiences in our cars, they take us on all sorts of adventures. I was gutted when I had to get rid of one of my cars, I'd been all over the country in it for various things, but it was starting to cost too much money in repairs. I've had my current car for 6 months and I love it to bits. It's only a few years old so of course there are lots of adventures to come and I already know I'll be sad when I have to say goodbye.

Loulou4022 · 27/06/2026 21:28

Omg I’ve been distraught at the loss of every car since my dad got rid of his triumph 2000 in 1986!!! I’ve had my current car 20 years and god knows how I’ll ever get rid of it! I think I may have to be buried in it!! DH said once we’d saved for our wedding we could start saving for a new car for me my response was a bit meh so we’re saving to pay the mortgage off instead!!

CurtsyFriends · 27/06/2026 21:12

Not unreasonable at all. I still have my first car almost 25yrs later. I haven’t driven it since 2003 but it will never leave me.

My DP also still has his first car. She is very special as his great grandad bought her new in 1935. He passed it on to DP’s Dad and he then inherited it from him.

Just bear in mind that, like partners, cars will eventually break down, become unreliable, cost a fortune to keep performing, decay, stop working and eventually become totally unnattractive compared to a new model.

Move on and don't look back.

😂

I was very emotionally attached to our car, aged about 6. Can still remember its registration number and I am now nearly 68. I am also very emotionally attached to my current car, which I have had since 2004. We have driven nearly 450k km together.
I probably need therapy.

RollOnSunshine · 08/06/2026 08:39

Yes I had my last car for 12 years and many great memories with it. I was very upset when I scrapped it because we needed the space for it's replacement. It was very old by that point and had lived a full life.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 08/06/2026 08:15

We had our last car for 19 years.,it was awful leaving it imay the garage when we picked up our new one. We both felt the same.

Raven08 · 08/06/2026 08:10

No.
It's a thing. It can't love you back.

cinquanta · 08/06/2026 08:03

We tend to keep our cars a long time so do tend to get a bit attached. DH has had one of his for 40 years, another for 30.

AutisticLass2026 · 08/06/2026 08:01

Yes the first car I bought and drove the day I passed my test and 2 years later needed a family car, I was so upset not even the shiny new ones dh took my to see made up for that

No. Not at all.
I have happy memories of trips in previous cars, but each time a car was changed it was because it was costing too much to keep it on the road and it was getting to the point that I was concerned about reliability.

So, for me the practical considerations over-rode anything else.

I notice you said his car. Do you drive it?

Edited

Yes I do. I have my own car but we hop between the two. His is more the fun car.

Not my car but my best friend’s. It was a people carrier and had to be scrapped. We are both single parents with 5 teens between us and we had countless good times (also arguments) and UK and European holidays in that car as the kids were growing up.

When it came to be picked up we all gathered round it and had a ‘ceremony’ (of sorts) all standing around the car one by one telling it our favourite memory in the car.

We did it as a kind of joke but when it came to it being towed away we were all really emotional. So I completely get it!

Had ours for 14 years from new, did 130k miles….. was so sad when we finally traded it in a month ago. Children entered it as babies and left as teenagers ….We took a last photo with it 😂

I think you mean “first world problem” but I totally get where you’re coming from - I was quite attached to our old car as like you we had lots of special trips with fab memories attached. The new car is more practical for city driving and less “fun”!

Yes I do. I realised I typed third instead of first and couldn’t change it.

I have not felt this but you feel how you feel, it’s ok. Could you not take on his car if you like it so much?

Sorry to be that guy but I can’t resist pointing out that this is a first world problem, not a third!

I couldn’t as we’d need to trade it in to use as a deposit.

I was with my first car, lots of memories with kids and road trips, named her etc and then had to scrap her - was so sad! The woman on the phone said the same upset happened with another customer because she had given birth in her car, so she was actually crying giving it up (I dont know if I could have scrapped my car if it was my child's birthing place lol).
Then ended up a driver for my dad's motability car and it was a BEAUT - unusual colour, limited edition as automatic drive etc. Got the lease extension to the full 5 years because I kept trying to get them to sell me her! (This car was also named) they wouldn't sell and she got transferred to down south (Im North) but I found the car online!! Unfortunately the price they wanted was unjust (v.low milage) so I gave up and let her go... regret? Yes because I loathe new cars now and all this nonsense tech as standard like speed limit warnings every 2 seconds / automatic lane assist after a certain speed and if you turn it off - it goes on again next time! I miss old cars.

My very first car went to a scrap dealer last week. I was fine until they turned up to take it. Went back inside the house and just cried 😢

Defender90 · 07/06/2026 23:21

Absolutely. I’m so glad to find people the same!

I cried on the way to trade in my last one, were considering changing mine now and a friend has said they’d like to buy mine but the thought of seeing it around here potentially not being looked after has me a mess at the thought.

DHs last car had so so many road trip and dog outing memories, but it went to scrap and I could deal with that better.
