AIBU to ask family to keep vegan takeaway dishes separate?

Last weekend we got an Indian takeaway with family who were visiting. Everyone chose their food and I ordered it.

Some people decided they wanted to try others food, everyone was ok with that but I asked that people didn’t use the same utensils for the vegan dishes and meat dishes because I’m vegan and didn’t want meat in my food.

I thought this was a normal, fair and easy request but a couple of my family members started saying I was being over the top and asking what I thought would happen if some meat got in my food. I said I didn’t want to eat meat or animal products, even tiny amount, not that I thought anything would happen. They accused me of ruining the evening. I didn’t. I asked them, they caused a fuss, I explained my reasons and then carried on with the night. Everyone else got on with the night but these 2 spent the evening making sarcastic comments towards me and ignoring me at times.

Would you have had an issue with using separate utensils to put some of the vegan food on your plate, would you have seen it as ‘over the top’ or just been courteous and used different utensils with no fuss?

We are seeing this family member again next month. Lucky us. We will likely get a takeaway again and I’m thinking of just saying hands off and no one can try mine. 😬

why the comparison with allergy? It's completely different.

One is a lifestyle CHOICE, fair enough but it's just that, a choice.
The other is a severe health issue.

One is being precious, the other needs to be kept safe.
Fair enough for people to be respectful, but it's just ridiculous to compare a diet preference with a medical condition.

Would you be happy using utensils that were shared with food with dog, cat, horse or human parts in?

Yeah. You aren't being unreasonable. My dd and her husband are vegan.
We'll occasionally pick up an Indian takeaway to take over to their house and eat with them, We wouldn't think of sharing, because they can't share ours.
I even ask permission to bring chicken curry into the house but they don't mind that, presumably because we're treating them.

I'm now thinking perhaps they hate it. I'll have to ask.

bigboykitty · 05/06/2026 20:08

Is it a law of the universe that every vegan thread attracts disrespectful twats?

DedododoDedadada · 05/06/2026 20:08

I would always put a a seperate spoon or fork out for each dish regardless.

lazyarse123 · 05/06/2026 20:07

You were right to ask them to use separate spoons. If they visit again tell them to order vegan for themselves if they want to try it but you 're not sharing.

You were right to make a stand…….would they have used the same utensils on someone’s food who had a severe food allergy to those who didn’t? Bloody inconsiderate AND childish to keep the sarcasm active all evening!

My teen grabbed her food and disappeared saying Joey doesn’t share food. She had the right idea.

Thank you everyone. I knew I wasn’t being unreasonable but good to see the vast majority agreeing. I think I will just say I’m not sharing in future and let the rest of them do what they want.

Yanbu. I’d wouldn’t want peoples saliva-laced forks in my food even though I am a meat eater! That’s just common courtesy surely. And if a vegan friend had chosen dishes (and I’m assuming the vegan dishes were in the minority) I wouldn’t even ask to try and would definitely use separate serving spoons. I’m very much a meat eater but do think people love to criticise vegans. I’ve seen it much more that way around than vegans criticising meat eaters tbh 🤷🏻‍♀️.

eta next time I’d just take what I wanted first then leave them to it.

Dancingsquirrels · 05/06/2026 20:02

They're dipping used forks into dishes? Eww

Suggest you help yourself to what you can eat, then leave them to fight over the rest

YANBU

It’s the smugness for me.

I wouldn’t sit and lecture a vegan about my choice to eat meat. So why does a vegan get to lecture me?

You wouldn't? That's good to hear.
Because the constant babbling on about how meat eating is NATURAL!! your body NEEDS it!! The endless anecdotes about aneamic, hairless toothless osteoporosis riddled, pale pasty vegans you know; the lame gotchas about leather taxi seats and mice in grain fields is so very tiresome.
And people who think vegans are smug usually can't resist boring us sideways with all that.

openended · 05/06/2026 20:00

Not precious at all. I would put spoons in all the dishes though and get people to serve themselves. I wouldn't want anyone else's fork in my food.

BrendaSmall · 05/06/2026 19:53

If I was vegan because I didn’t want to eat meat I’d be ok with it, I eat a lot of vegan food due to it not containing dairy, so I’d be annoyed as they could contaminate my food and I would be very ill due to dairy allergies

But your not vegan and the Op is and isnt ok with it.

ShetlandishMum · 05/06/2026 19:59

I eat dairy/glutenfree.
I don't share buffet style as people in general don't respect crosscontamination.
And I don't want other peoples food anyway.
So no thank you - my food.

bigboykitty · 05/06/2026 19:58

They are totally unreasonable and inconsiderate OP. I'm not a vegan. It's shit behaviour.

x2boys · 05/06/2026 19:57

Callmeback · 05/06/2026 18:57

Sorry but I do think you were a bit over the top. It's not like any additional animals died. No extra animals suffered because you used someone's spoon to share out some dahl.

Surely you can understand that as a vegsn the Op doesnt want to eat animal products at all?
Im a meat lover and i get it it
OP Joey doesnt share food!

Cakeandcardio · 05/06/2026 19:55

You know you are not being unreasonable. Your family members know that too.
If they are anything like the ones in my family, then this is just their latest excuse to pick on you and belittle you. Maybr just think about your whole relationship with them.

OneDogTwoCatsHalfaDH · 05/06/2026 19:53

TakeawayRow · 05/06/2026 18:53

I did exactly that but people started using their own forks going from one to another instead of the ones I had put with each dish, which is when I asked they didn’t put meat forks in the vegan food.

Never mind that it's no problem to use different serving utensils for meat and veg dishes, if anyone started using their dirty fork to dip into meals that were for sharing I'd be rapping their knuckles with a big spoon!
Just be a bit firmer or dish everything up and don't let people do it themselves, next time. If they don't like it, well tough titty.

It was a bit precious. I don't think I'd be in a hurry to eat with you again.

You sound a delight.

Are you always this inconsiderate, uneducated, selfish and socially unaware with people?

5128gap · 05/06/2026 19:51

This is a really unpleasant way to treat you. I'm vegan and none of my family or friends would dream of making me uncomfortable around food. It actually sounds a bit spiteful. Are they like that in other ways?

MilkyLeonard · 05/06/2026 19:50

ValenciaOrangeJawline · 05/06/2026 19:47

Nobody can genuinely be this self absorbed, surely?

Sadly I’ve spent enough time on Mumsnet to know that they can.

That's gross, to stick your own fork in someone else's food 🤮

I'm like James Corden in Gavin and Stacey, I order what I want to eat and I don't want to share! Most of the time Indian is too spicy for me, I only order mild dishes, so no, I don't want to try your beef Madras!

Bufftailed · 05/06/2026 19:49

Yeah just get your own dish

Hollowvoice · 05/06/2026 19:48

There's been a lot of odd comments here! OP did nothing wrong, wanting to keep her vegan food vegan is perfectly normal
