Tbf it’s a Norwegian journalist and a Norwegian academic who have got their knickers in a twist. The academic doesn’t like the kit design either

i like the fact a lot of the kits have leaned into their countries heritage - there are some rather lovely ones

There is an issue with neo-Nazi groups appropriating Norse/Viking symbols and the like, but I think that's more reason to try to keep a hold of them, and not surrender them. Context is everything.

I wonder if the Muppet quoted in the article was wringing his hands over the Vikings TV series, or having fainting fits over Drayton Manor and Paultons Park having Viking themed areas...

In Shetland they dress up as vikings every year for up helly aa (and it’s an honour and a great expense!)… so what’s the issue?

One of the Lewes bonfire societies has loads of Vikings in its processions.

It's not chauvinistic. Viking women were incredibly strong. They did heavy work and could fight to defend in case of attack. They had a lot more rights and freedoms compared to women in other societies and were more equal to men. Many Viking women's graves have been found with valuable items in which means they were highly respected.

It's part of their culture and it's been done respectfully IMO.

There were some badass female Vikings...Lagertha being the most famous. There were also female Viking warriors known as Shieldmaidens who often fought alongside the men.
