AIBU to ask my next door neighbours not to smoke indoors?

Genuinely not sure what my own opinion is on this so intrigued to see what the consensus is. My house is an end-of-terrace and the next door neighbours smoke indoors (sometimes normal cigarettes, sometimes weed). I’ve no major issue with smokers, but because they’re doing it inside, the smell comes through to my living room. We’ve not mentioned it to the neighbours and haven’t decided if we will or not (to be fair it isn’t constant) but I’m wondering if it would even be acceptable to ask someone not to do something which they’re well within their rights to do in their own home.

Voting is:

IABU = no you can’t ask someone not to do something in their own home
IANBU = yes totally fine to say something because the smell is coming through the wall

Well I certainly did. My new neighbours moved in and stunk my house out 24 hours a day with their disgusting cigarettes.
I once went round there at three in the morning and said can you stop smoking next to my bedroom because it stinks and I'm working tomorrow. I hadn't had any proper sleep for weeks because of their stench.
So they stopped smoking in the house.
I'm not putting up with that.
If they refuse you can do something - you can get a special air purifier which will take it out of the air and reduce the smell, it must have a carbon filter. The one I looked at was about £500 because it needed to cover quite a large area.
Or you can complain to the council who will tell you what you need to do to prove your complaint, and environmental health if it's affecting your health.

Good lord, you won't find many people more anti-smoking than me (it killed both my parents) but that's one of the most weirdly unhinged things I've ever read.

Ipsevenenabibas · 05/06/2026 22:36

Only on mumsnet do you read stuff like this 😂. I've read some really batshit stuff on here but this has to be in the top 3 of all time.

I think it depends entirely on the sort of people they are. If they are lovely and obliging and would hate to inconvenience anyone, you may drop lucky. However, will it be any better in the garden drifting through your windows? I lived next door to a weed smoker and could occasionally smell it in some rooms. However it was nothing compared to when they smoked in the yard. My washing, even my cat stank of it.

You cannot be serious. People who smoke have an addiction. You think if someone knocked on and asked then not to smoke they would say "Sure. Sorry; how horrible and inconsiderate of me to smoke in my own home! Ill smoke outside instead....oh wait...then you'll smell it when you're in the garden or if you open the windows....so I guess I'll quit because I couldn't possibly have you dealing with the smell of smoke. After all that's what lovely obliging people like me do. Thanks for highlighting the issue.'

@jinglejanglescarecat you do realise how insane you sound. The risk from the small amount of cigarette smoke seeping into a home from the neighbours is not a health risk that any government agency will do anything about other than laugh at you

This thread really highlights the folly of coming on here for legal advice. So much of it is just vibes and "yoy may as well ask."

I remember as a child smelling it my bedroom from my next door neighbours. My Mum was aghast it was in my bedroom. I think the plumbing came into my room and I’m guessing air moved around the gaps and it seeped in. We didn’t like it back then.

I think you could mention something along the lines of “just wondering do you smoke as we can smell smoke in our house occasionally and we don’t smoke”. They may decide to smoke somewhere near a window.

believe me I get it, I’d hate it, I think nowadays people maybe more courteous. Even if they smoke outside it seeps through windows and guffs the outside area out. It is becoming more antisocial but smokers will say it’s their own property.

My neighbours sometimes smoke weed outside and I don’t think they realise how pungent it is.

It depends on how your house is built. Mine is a modern terrace and you can definitely smell it very strongly. So much so I could tell when he was lighting up a new one, he chain smokes. Sometimes stays up all night and smokes.
There is no way I am putting up with that. If I can smell it it means I am breathing in toxic particles and I don't want lung cancer from someone else's cigarette smoke.
I don't care about neighbourly relations, if someone is making my life a misery with their stinking cigarettes then they are not good neighbours and they don't care either.

No it means your home is poorly built and your neighbour will have a valid complaint about you harassing them especially going to their door at 4am because you dont like them smoking in their own home

Could the council really do anything to stop someone doing something perfectly legal in a house they own?

No they cant.
Even if environmental health could detect cigarette smoke (which they wont test for) they would tell you to fix thr firewall between the houses

I lived in an old Victorian flat and had this issue. A new tenant moved in, they'd light up and the smell of cigarettes would instantly fill my flat. It wasn't a faint smell either. So I asked the guy as sweetly as I could if he'd mind smoking outdoors instead. He said yes, and mostly stuck to it. So you never know! Ignore the spluttering indignants and give it a go.

Nice to hear that there are some decent people around!

ChuffinCharlie · 05/06/2026 21:16

Be careful what you wish for, my neighbours smoke outside and the smell completely spoils my time in my small garden. I guess it depends what’s most important to you but I feel for you either way

Did you really just respond to a question about fumes reaching your house from elsewhere, the only topic being asked about, with that . . . . . .

If nothing else the risk of the fumes reaching your house being an issue to you from somewhere else, is effectively zero even if the person was cooking at extreme heats with specific oils for years. If you can smell cigarette smoke, it is always poisoning you. And many of the cancer causing fumes that can still reach you, have no smell and can still be impacting you or children even if you cant smell anything from that neighbour smoking.

I didn’t ask about if you were cooking in unventilated spaces with extreme heat with specific oils daily for years could this cause cancer, because that would be changing the topic.

Um you said there is no risk to cancer from cooking fumes.

I'm surprised you didn't know that there is but I'm delighted to see that you do now know.

So you wouldn’t even be concerned that they can smell it? How selfish.

Honestly op, I can imagine it must be horrible for you, it would drive me absolutely mad. But unfortunately you can’t ask them to stop. Well you can ask, but they will probably tell you to piss off.

Selfish to please yourself in your own home that you pay for? I really have heard it all now.

The article you have linked does not back up your assertion that cooking fines cause cancer.

This is literally the first sentence:

From creating toxic chemicals to an increased risk of lung cancer, the latest evidence suggests that some ways of cooking come with health risks.

Were you trying to be funny or did you just not read it??!

I don't smoke but I absolutely would wet myself with laughter if I did and a neighbour asked me not to do it in my own home!

Of course fumes from cooking can cause cancer. It's been well known for years.

How on earth did you not know this?

shelvedplans · 05/06/2026 20:34

@BeansOnToast41 there’s an issue. Either they can sort it out or you can sort it out. They are entitled to do as they please in their own home, so that rules them out, which leaves it with you to sort. Improve your walls!

whatcanthematterbe81 · 05/06/2026 20:24

This is crazy, mainly because I’m shocked it goes next door. I’m always making curry’s and now I’m worried my neighbours can smell it! I agree is horrible to sneak smoke so not really commenting on but to be fair, I’m just shocked smells go through walls 🥴

You can’t ask them not to smoke but you could research ways to reduce it coming through to your house and see if there’s anything they can do their side.

Savvysix1984 · 05/06/2026 19:39

I’d rather in the house than in the garden.

My friend lived next to someone who was hoarding their own excitement. Took 8 years for the council to take action about that & it smelled like a farmyard & was alive with flies. So I'd think the chances of any action on smoking would be zero. It's batshit anyway. Where would it end? Only allowed to start petrol & diesel vehicles half a mile from the nearest human on a cold morning?

Batshit to hoard excitement too 😂

Elsvieta · 05/06/2026 19:36

With weed you can, because it's illegal. You could give them the option of knocking it off themselves before you call the police.

Tobacco, sadly no.
