To be cringed out by this (re sharing a takeaway)

When me and partner get a takeaway and share it he is obsessive over making sure we get half each, he will literally count pieces of chicken in a curry for example - how would this make you feel ?

OP posts:

It would give me the ick unfortunately.

I think though that I'd have asked quite early on why he is doing this and what it's all about. Being generous perhaps he thinks that is truly the fairest way to do it and doesn't want to take more than his share.

I'd just dish it up myself when it arrived. I agree with you OP that it is the normal thing to do to simply eye half of shared dishes and get on with it, not count pieces for each. Any functioning adult is capable of simply estimating half a portion.

I do this. It’s nothing about being tight, it’s just the easiest and quickest way for me to see I’ve dished it out fairly. (Edited to add - I do have OCD…this may be relevant information 😂 )

Same! My husband has to do the dishing out as I have to be exactly fair and even.

SouthLondonMum22 · 04/06/2026 21:11

I would expect to eat my own curry and wouldn't want to share so I'd be annoyed if it was just assumed that I'd share. 😂

It sounds like he's trying to make it fair which is better than so many men on here who are greedy and happily leave their partners with very little.

jinglejanglescarecat · 04/06/2026 21:10

At least he didn’t insist on penis portions 😂

AImportantMermaid · 04/06/2026 21:10

One divides, the other picks - that’s the law.

OuijaBoard · 04/06/2026 21:09

It wouldn't bother me as long as he wasn't taking a long time about it and delaying you getting started eating. As he is being fair and not advantaging or disadvantaging either of you, I'd guess he's just not good at making a visual estimate of "half" or isn't confident he can and so does it this way. (He could also just ask you to make the split, though.) But unless it's part of a larger pattern of scorekeeping or tit for tat or being inflexibly precise, I'd probably just snicker and let him count away.

whitefluffydog · 04/06/2026 21:06

I have always eaten 1 fifth of what any man I have been with, usually eats. So these things would never even happen

MegMortimer · 04/06/2026 21:03

The thing is that this behaviour will extend into every area of life, for him. My ex was a bit like this: terrified that I was getting something that he wasn't. Note the 'ex'. This guy is tight, OP. Get rid.

I'd feel right at home 🤪.

Did he also grow up in a family with food issues?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 04/06/2026 21:02

DH is determined to make sure I get half of all “fun” food like takeaways etc. which is slightly ridiculous when due to me being very short and him being very sporty, his calorie intake is about double mine.I regularly have to tell him it’s fine for him to eat more than exactly half of something we are sharing /see him clearly still hungry having demolished his share and waiting to take more until after I’ve finished.

it could be him being tight, but also OP it could be he’s trying really hard to be fair. To not take more than his fair share. Someone taught him to count how much of something there is, how many it’s shared between and only take his share.

Strawberryteabag · 04/06/2026 21:02

differentstrokesfordifferentfolks · 04/06/2026 20:51

Eh?? Why would they not?

I agree i would always give my DH a bigger portion than me, men generally need more calories than women. I cant eat anywhere near as much.

Wauwinet · 04/06/2026 20:59

Cloudyonasunnyday · 04/06/2026 20:31

Haha I’m glad I’m not being unreasonable. I will point it out next time and yes very tight !

If he’s “very tight” then he won’t make a good partner. These men never do. They’re too busy resenting everything that everyone else has or gets, including their own wives and children.

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/06/2026 20:58

If there's an odd number of pieces, or some are much bigger, who gets the extra? It feels a bit mean if he's doing this because he's worried you will cheat him. If he's doing it to ensure you're not left with less, then it's sweet. Though usually with takeaways I find there's plenty for everyone to just take what they want.

TheCloudsAbove · 04/06/2026 20:58

He seems to be a fair guy. It’s better than being a food hogger, lol.

Ipsevenenabibas · 04/06/2026 20:57

Being tight is the biggest turn off for me! Eeewww.

vanessashanessa99 · 04/06/2026 20:57

What a gimp. Just order one each ffs so he can stop pissing about counting bits of chicken

7238SM · 04/06/2026 20:55

Sprig1 · 04/06/2026 20:44

I think it's ok. It's nice to be fair.

You thinks it ok for your partner to pick through a dish to count individual, little pieces of chicken??? 😬

rwalker · 04/06/2026 20:55

VIII · 04/06/2026 20:45

The op isn't talking about one portion of just sauce and no meat though. She's talking about her partner counting to ensure each plate has exactly the same amount of chicken. Do you honestly count out the pieces of meat in something like a curry to make sure each portion is identical?

I kind of do for ease
if it was a curry with diced chicken 1 big spoonful each (no counting) then even out what’s left by putting say 4 pieces on each plate

same with Sunday roast everyone gets 4 spuds

just find it easier than guessing

but from memory there been plenty of threads about how partner always ends up with bigger portions and he’s called a twat

guess we all do things differently

Why would a man and woman have the same amount of food?

Eh?? Why would they not?

differentstrokesfordifferentfolks · 04/06/2026 20:51

It makes me feel that I’m glad that I do not share food. And that I could never shag a man who “counted pieces of chicken”.

Joolay · 04/06/2026 20:50

Why would a man and woman have the same amount of food?

SunnySunnyDayz · 04/06/2026 20:50

Takeaway should always be enough that you have leftovers, order more side dishes.

As PP said it wouldn't bother me if the dish obviously had few of the main ingredient, like prawns. I'd be more bothered if it was randomly split and I got the worse portion.

I did have a bf once who was very careful about splitting but made his portion bigger because men need more food than women. He's not wrong but we were skinny and skint students and I was paying half so nope.

bronnibro · 04/06/2026 20:50

I think most people do just eyeball it and give half roughly, you can normally see if it's fairly shared and someone counting prices of this or other is tiresome! Definitely a Ick
