To be cringed out by this (re sharing a takeaway)

When me and partner get a takeaway and share it he is obsessive over making sure we get half each, he will literally count pieces of chicken in a curry for example - how would this make you feel ?

I put out my wife's and my dinner this eve and carefully divided the prawns to ensure I had more 😂

Obviously that's absolutely fine if you eyeballed it, but if you actually counted your wife needs to LTB 😂

What on earth does this mean? What do you mean? Why not?

A mans calorific requirements are significantly higher than a woman's.

It used to be that food packets recommended 2000 calories a day for a woman and 2500 for a man.

Now it just says "2000 a day" ambiguously, without reference to anyone - part of the plan to blend / obscure the sexes ever more.

Why would a man and woman have the same amount of food?

What on earth does this mean? What do you mean? Why not?

Maybe he is showing you he is being fair?

You can’t win on here, the amount of posts where one partner snaffles as much take away leaving the other starving and now this where its seen as wrong.

How would you like him to divide the food?

"How would you like him to divide the food?"

Ummm maybe like a normal person. Takeaway = lunchbox of rice right? Dish a reasonable amount for both people in a considerate way (ie no penis portions). If there is any left - ask the other person if they want more. If after eating and there is some left and disher wants more, say do you mind if I have some more? Same with the curry. Dish a reasonable amount for everyone with consideration. If any left, again offer to dish up more or if going back in for seconds, ask other person if they are after seconds too then SHARE. Like normal people.

Counting pieces of chicken in a curry is a ridiculous way for an adult man to behave.

Half and half is fine if ordering more of whatever is not an option but COUNTING pieces of chicken. Come on.

Both stinginess and greed are so unattractive.

XMissPlacedX · 06/06/2026 21:25

I do that, but only because I don’t want my DH thinking I’m ‘diddling’ him out of anything, not because I’m worried im giving him more. Are you sure it’s not the same for him, Or is he like this in general?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/06/2026 21:22

Can't be doing with a tight partner but I wouldn't find someone ensuring everyone gets a fair portion of the takeaway something to get my knickers in a twist over like some people on here who appear to be so overdramatic, going on about ick, stingey etc, without knowing the reasons he's doing it.

It's just common sense if you have a curry with lot of sauce and onions and larger chicken pieces so that there are only a few. I would do that when putting serving our takeaway curries. And when I'd shared it out so I had enough I'd put any leftover pieces of chicken on DH's plate, because he is bigger than me and can eat a bigger portion. If I were to split it very equally I'd leave some of mine so it would be a total waste.

Funnily enough he’s an only child

One of my brothers used to pick out the biggest and best of anything with no regards to anybody else and an ex partner would always offer to dish up food but there never seemed to be a decent amount for either of us so I had to start getting extras ......until a caught the greedy grunt absolutely stuffing his face whilst he was serving stuff out in the kitchen 🐷🐷🐷

Pippa12 · 06/06/2026 15:28

Get the scales out and weigh it accurately- he’ll side eye you then

ApiratesaysYarrr · 06/06/2026 15:24

One cuts, the other one chooses, is how I brought up my kids for dividing cake etc.

In my experience the person dishing out usually errs on the side of caution on their portion, so as not to look greedy.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/06/2026 11:56

I wouldn’t share a takeaway in the first place. Having my own prevents any greedy sod taking the lions share!

Oh dear, I wonder if I'm OCD. I do this, usually things like pieces of filled pasta or how many chunks of meat in something. Things like chips though, I do by sight. It's just that before I did that DP might say how he had very little chicken in his, and I had loads, so I try to count and make it fair. I'm AuDHD.

Yes - a lot of people just scan items on sight for a mental count, don't they. I often do. I wouldn't need to count items to share out loud in most cases, but I would frequently do the counting in my head automatically anyway.

Also just to add, if you were splitting a pizza between 2 wouldn’t you make sure each person got the same number of slices that were roughly equal in size? Same with a cake, if you were cutting a cake would you not make sure each slice was roughly the same in size and each person got the same number of slices? I don’t see this as different tbh

No, you obviously have to just hack randomly at the cake. Paying attention to portion sizes is ICK-INDUCING and probably GRIM.

gannett · 06/06/2026 10:50

BusyMum47 · 06/06/2026 09:48

@Cloudyonasunnyday Ugh. That would give me the raging ick. Someone you’re in a committed relationship with & have a child with is THAT tight & fussy? Nope.

How is it tight and fussy to share something equally? Would you rather he randomly spooned it out and one of you gets one-third and the other two-thirds?

The goal is obviously to get equal shares and the best way to achieve that is to count out chicken pieces, or cut down the middle, or whatever.

It's so weird to be bothered by this. If a dish has countable things in it like chicken pieces then it's normal to count them out to make sure everyone gets the same. I do this if I'm serving portions to DP and I. I do this whether he's actually there for it. I do this in my head if I'm serving guests at a dinner party. It's easier than trying to eyeball it (which always seems to result in someone getting way too much or way too little).

Sometimes I think MNers are looking for reasons to dislike the people around them. If you hate your partner that much then leave him FGS.

Yep and if there’s no an equal amount of a food I sometimes split it in half so everyone has an equal share! Gasp!

fairydustt · 06/06/2026 10:07

I think it’s a matter of perspective, you could look at it and see it as him making sure HE is getting his fair share, or you could look at it as him making sure YOU get your fair share. One could be seen as selfish/being tight, and one seen as fair/thoughtful. Life gets better when you see/assume the good in people

Laura95167 · 06/06/2026 09:43

Sounds awful your partner wants you each have an equal amount. Terrible.

If i was sharing a main with someone I would count out the meat to share it down the middle.

Would you prefer he just slopped it on and maybe you got 2 bits?

Tbh if its a problem for you that he checks hes shared equally with you - just buy a main each?

JayJayj · 06/06/2026 09:16

I would get the scales out next time. Point out that the amount of pieces does not negate half. Each piece may be different sizes.

Do it straight faced, no smiling, deadpan serious.

It’s too late now, but I wouldn’t have reproduced with someone like this. You are meant to be a partnership. What happens if you end up unable to work as much? My health has declined since having my daughter. I am no longer able to work full time. It’s all just our money.

inappropriateraspberry · 06/06/2026 09:11

I think he’s just making sure it’s a fair split. Would you be happy if you got 2 bits of chicken and he got 10?

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 06/06/2026 07:56

DH & I always get our own so there’s no problem.

Badanxiety · 05/06/2026 21:13

I do this but I count in my head, it’s because I need to believe in fairness and if I’m paying which I usually do I’m having my fair share,it does come from my childhood not feeling like an equal to my siblings
