Why so much hate for Landlords on MN?

Who do LL's get so much hate on MN?

It seems so much more hate than there is any real life.

It costs the LL more as they have to put down a minimum of 25 percent deposit.

That's not why it costs them more.

I have explained in a previous post all the work we do.

No you haven't. You said there was no point telling anyone because they wouldn't believe you.

Bubblebathbefore8 · 05/06/2026 12:13

Landlords need to buy insurance, safety checks and certificates, maintain heating and water supplies, pay mortgage or other fees, advertise rental, legally contract, arrange check in/check out etc etc

A lot can be outsourced to letting/management agents but at a cost, not all can be. landlords don’t sit idle - there is work

edited to add that there is more work when a tenancy goes wrong, such as non payment of rent, damage caused, both happen.

If it's not so easy, why are you shying away from telling us what's so hard about it?
All you've offered is "it's earned, it's not easy, but I can't tell you why"

Of course it's easy. And it's not earned.
The only people earning are the tenants.

Just become a home owner. Of course! Why did they not think of that? It's so obvious when you put it that way.

They are so generous with their wisdom

Why don't they... Just get a job? Then they wouldn't have to get other people to earn their money for them.

TheTideIsNigh · 05/06/2026 12:04

coulditbeme2323 · 05/06/2026 11:41

So why not become a home owner so you don't have to give "morally wrong" people your money?

The private units they have in many of the large hospitals absolutely do. And in some specialities (not all) there are lucrative private practice opportunities.

I don't agree with that either.

OMG, is nothing sacred!

Gosh, I hope he's never rented out a property. He did use to travel a lot...

How dare you. Sir Dave would never.

You don't sound a very competent business person if I am being honest.

Just as well I don't see it as a business then.

coulditbeme2323 · 05/06/2026 11:53

Do you agree with anybody making money at all?

I have no problem with people working to make money.

Unless you're a slug, of course.

Landlords hate hedgehogs then 😝

UniDaysAcoming · 05/06/2026 11:53

All the hate seems to be towards the individual landlords not the institutional LLs. (Is it Lloyds who is now the biggest landlord? No mortgage issues there!) I doubt that they are better than the individual landlords. It's not LL Vs council - it is really individual LL Vs institutional LL Vs council/social housing.

I don't get the 'morally wrong' thing either - is Tesco also morally wrong for making a profit from food - an even more basic necessity?

Food is not economically scarce, and there is huge competition in the market.
If Tesco were making profits in a situation of scarcity, such as war-time rationing, that would be wrong.

Housing is scarce.

Nope. There was a thread on him - I was surprised to see some hate there too.

If a property is on the market who does it cost more to buy it?

  1. A Landlord
  2. Somebody who wants to live in it?

It costs the LL more as they have to put down a minimum of 25 percent deposit.

Maybe David Attenborough?

😆 🤣 this thread reminds me of the scene in Dr Zchivago where rich people's houses were taken over by commies.

The NHS who employed the doctors doesn't make a profit? Why are you equating public healthcare with private landlords?

The private units they have in many of the large hospitals absolutely do. And in some specialities (not all) there are lucrative private practice opportunities.

StandingDeskDisco · 05/06/2026 11:56

Itchthescratch · 05/06/2026 11:52

So you don't agree with pensions as a concept either? If pension funds weren't able to invest the money we pay into them to 'earn' money then we would all be absolutely screwed in retirement. So is workers depend on this capitalist system too

I agree with state pensions, not private ones.
In principle of course, ideally. I am aware we don't live in a perfect non-capitalist society.

The problem with private landlords is that there are waiting lists for state housing. If there were no waiting lists, if everyone could rent a state home who wanted one, I would have no problem with private landlords providing an additional service for the convenience of a tiny number of customers.

But it is morally wrong to profit from people who want a secure home and can't get one.

Worryingly, if you claim any benefits or use any public services, you're also benefiting from other people's labour and/or government borrowing (so other people's money). Only a minority of the population are net contributors and we all travel on the roads etc paid for by the borrowing.

No, but that is off-topic as we are specifically discussing private landlords here.

Do you agree with anybody making money at all?
