Why so much hate for Landlords on MN?

Who do LL's get so much hate on MN?

It seems so much more hate than there is any real life.

Because the landlord ultimately will have to sell the house? It's not like future buyers will overlook all this stuff and offer the same as a house that has been properly maintained. Skipping on basic maintenance is normally a false economy for homeowners whether they live there or not.

And if you maintain it you are also going to get a nicer quality of tenant.

Happens more than you think we have two houses on my road and they're literally crumbling in front of our eyes because the LL's don't want to maintain them and why would they? People still pay to live there.

I’ve certainly seen it.
But if you don’t like it, just substitute another example of people flaunting their wealth.

Another thing I can’t stand is women who go around with great big stones in their rings, seeming to be making the point of their (supposed) status, with what looks like a knuckleduster to me.

Again, women who push past me to get into a lift first, or stalk through with their nose in the air and no thanks if I hold a door open for them, as if they’re entitled to this.

It’s the lack of respect for others that annoys people, not the money itself.

I agree with with most of what you say.

People being rude to waiting staff, people pushing past you to get to a lift, people not saying thank you when you hold the door open for them. I mean that is just plain rude.

But I can't see why you are bothered by women who have big stones in their engagement rings. It is nothing to do with you and affects you in no way. If that is the ring the couple have chosen - then good luck to them.

It would be bonkers not to look after your own property imo.

In the real world who does that?

Who orders the most expensive dishes, doesn't eat them, and then purposely causes a mess for the waiting staff?

I have never seen anything like that in my life.

I’ve certainly seen it.

i think there are plenty of people who have a lot but take great care not to upset/offend others by flaunting it.
A good example of this kind of consideration: I once read an autobiography of the Duchess of Devonshire, the one who had been a Mitford sister. She wrote that she and her sisters were taught that they must never under any circumstances complain about anything in public, not the weather, not the food or anything else. Since they had so much more than most people, it would be bad taste to complain if something wasn't quite right. She also said that growing up wasn't too comfortable as all the sisters had to do domestic work in the house, had no pocket money , and their stately home had no heating! I think the kind of person who is careful of other people's feelings because they know they are fortunate is generally liked. What righty offends people are those who flaunt their wealth, eg ordering the most expensive dishes in a restaurant, and then leaving most of it, with the table left very messy and hard for staff to clear.

I think people need to stop being envious and pissed off with people who have more than them and funnel all that energy into improving their own lives

Seems like OPs question has been more than answered but they’re still not having it!
You can disagree with the answers OP, doesn’t mean they aren’t valid points.

There is a lot I disagree with.

So that mortgage is interest-only is it? 🙄

Most of them are, yes.

Why do you think OP? I have had some very, very, shitty landlords. They made my life and that of my child a misery with their poor quality housing and high rents.

How poor are we walking?

Why can't they afford houses? Because some people are bloody hoarding them.

Can you show me one area where there aren't houses to buy because Landlords have purchased them all?

Just one please.

If anything, it's a buyers market at the moment.

This is just not the case. People have always rented, for various reasons. Not everyone wants to buy.

Your ire is directed at the wrong people.

Okay so you think that if they all sold their property portfolios, then people would be able to afford to buy a house?

There has never been a shortage of houses for sale in my area. But it has never been affordable on one average salary. I would not have been able to afford a house despite being in a relatively good wage even if they did dump all their portfolio.

So again, what do you suggest for those of us who can’t buy their own place?

NorthXNorthWest · 10/06/2026 22:52

If you think it is that simple, you are part of the problem.

How is that a problem
People need options

what do people do who need to rent if there are no rentals

Students need rentals
People who’ve just started out need rentals , they don’t all find work near mum and dad
Divorcees and recently made single need rentals
Returners need rentals
People with bad credit need rentals
People who don’t want the hassle of owning need rentals
etc
etc
If theres none to rent not only is choice being taken away but they are left out in the cold with no where to live

TransportNerd · 10/06/2026 22:59

Anarchy99 · 10/06/2026 21:39

No one’s stopping people from having a roof over their head
That’s why
There are properties to rent or buy

If you think it is that simple, you are part of the problem.

Anarchy99 · 10/06/2026 21:39

Not everyone wants to line the pockets of people who own dozens or even hundreds of properties either.

People sometimes need to rent

TransportNerd · 10/06/2026 21:34

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 10/06/2026 19:56

Well no
because there’s aren’t enough to rent anyway
Louds have been sold off in recent years.
Landlords aren’t hoarding them empty. They are renting them to people who need a roof over their head.

Not everyone is born with a deposit, not everyone wants to be tied down to home ownership.

Actually, a lot of landlords are stopping just that, by hoarding properties that aren't available for others to buy.

Did they do it to your detriment? I’m sure if you made a fair offer when the house was on the market, you could have bought it.

This Is just like the billionaire thread.

Given that house prices aren’t likely to go down to affordable levels any time soon, what do you suggest someone who lived alone does? I left school nearly 40 years ago and worked all the time since yet I couldn’t buy a house.
