Yes of course. A friend of mine lost a huge amount after gastric surgery, although I don't actually know how much, and she had people passing her in the street and not recognising her at all, or she would speak to them and they would look puzzled.

Samewrinklesnewname · 04/06/2026 10:41

I lost over 14.5 which was more than half my body weight and have maintained for 5 years, people regularly don’t recognise me

Wecanbeheroes26 · 04/06/2026 10:26

Totally unrecognisable. That's a massive loss.

WorstPaceScenario · 04/06/2026 10:09

I've lost 11 stone, which was more than half of my body weight. I look like a different person.

AuDrusilla · 04/06/2026 09:57

why

TorturedParentsDepartment · 04/06/2026 09:41

Depends where you've lost it from - I've lost 7 - I didn't notice the change for the first few stones (as they went from my arse and I don't spend much time looking at that), but then I suddenly lost a chunk from my face and fucking hell, I still do a double take at myself in the mirror sometimes, and people I've known previously have completely not recognised me until I've started speaking to my kids and they've recognised the kids first.

This poster does this alllll the time, if you look out for it you'll start to see it. They change name, post a question in the title with the most vague opening post and then never come back. Then they'll do it again 5 minutes later about something else

I had a feeling when I read the very short opening post yesterday, that the poster wouldn’t be back, so I didn’t bother contributing. Such a waste of people’s time. I hardly ever comment now, unless the OP has been back. But that means one or more other poor sods trying to interact with them first. Ah well, I suppose that’s chat forums for you!

As my post says, this was a colleague from only a couple of years ago (might have been less than that). I agree after 10 years, I might well not expect to recognise someone.

I’ve had this experience and it’s kind of great, I’m 10 stone lighter now and last couple of days have been at an expo where I was able to walk past people I previously knew without them recognising me.

I hate that!! Why did I bother contributing!

WaltzingWaters · 04/06/2026 09:27

Blimey, that’s not far off double what I weigh - so yes, it’s a massive amount and I’d expect them to look very different.

maddiemookins16mum · 04/06/2026 09:22

Of course but it means that they were likely to have been very, very overweight and mentioning it refers to that.

I refuse to answer until you come back
to give more detail and context!

TwiggyShrimp · 04/06/2026 08:30

I don't know. In what way? Facial or body?

I've lost that much (possibly more) but haven't really ever asked anyone how different I looked between then and now.

I'm sure if I bumped into people I knew 10 years ago they absolutely would not recognise me if we hadn't kept in touch. If that's what is behind the OPs post that is the reason someone hasn't 'noticed'.

@Weighloss777 Are you going to return to your thread to engage with anyone ?

Yes - I’m assuming you lost this and no one has said anything? I have a family member that was never slim but not overweight either. In her 30’s she gained 200 pounds so obviously looked a lot different. Over the years she has lost 100 pounds (which is great) but is still 250 and I remember her as 150. We recently saw each other and I didn’t say anything - now I’m feeling bad that I didn’t. But I guess the reason I didn’t is that I remember her at 150 so 250 still seems like a lot on her, and I’ve only seen her several times in the past 20 years. Whereas as a child/teen I saw her several times a year and the 150 on her is the ‘Normal’ to me iykwim.

That's because you just see her as her though. A person. Not a number in a scale.

Don't feel bad. She will be very happy some people aren't commenting on her up and down weight loss. In that situation a positive comment can often be negative ( oooh look at all you have lost, but let's face it it will be back on again - either explicit or implied). You haven't. Lots of people will have. It was probably a relief you didn't mention it.

For a person whose weight fluctuates, the comments you get are 90% awful, disparaging dreadful comments that make you want to curl up and die.

I've been there for years. To talk to someone who just doesn't mention it is great. You did that for her.

I bumped into an ex colleague I'd not seen for a couple of years and he must have lost over 10 stone. He was entirely unrecognisable; the entire structure of his face seemed to have changed. He literally had to tell me who he was because I thought he was a stranger, and he said that he was finding lots of people didn't realise who he was.

KnittyKnotty · 03/06/2026 21:43

Depends what their starting weight was and if they were hitting the gym and improving posture/muscles mass etc.

23 stone to 10 stone would be a huge difference.

43st to to 30st not so much.

Doggymummar · 03/06/2026 21:39

I've lost about ten stone I think and seem to be unrecognisable

Squiillionaire · 03/06/2026 21:34

Depending on what they weighted to begin with yes they would look very different. But that's not to say people would mention it. I lost 8 stone a few years ago. I look completely different. Not everyone I know has remarked on it. Probably as they don't know what to say. I think some people don't like to say you look good as that implies you looked awful before. Or they wonder if the weight loss is due to illness. Or they simply think it's not nice to make remarks about someone's weight, whether it is loss or gain. Or they simply don't define their friend by how much that friend weighs.

HoppityBun · 03/06/2026 21:26

When this has happened to friends m they’ve looked almost unrecognisable

AlwaysALittleHomesick · 03/06/2026 21:24

Yes, 13 stone is a lot of fat so I’d expect them to look drastically different.

The most I’ve known someone lose is 9 stone. She went from huge to fairly normal sized.

Takoneko · 03/06/2026 20:59

@Grammarninja There’s a huge visible difference between 254kg (40st) and 171kg (27st). A 171kg person will never look small, but they look very different at 250kg. Like I said, I follow sumo, where you get people at those sort of weights.
This photo shows what a 175kg man looks like standing next to a 250kg man. At the same height, the difference in build would be even more pronounced.

EDIT Apparently I can’t post the photo. If anyone is curious, you can see the picture here. https://tachiai.org/tag/dewanojo/page/2/ It’s the third one on this article.
