Do you pack your husband’s bag when he goes away..?

Was chatting to a friend of a friend the other day. She was having a moan about her useless husband. In the course of this moan she mentioned that she’d had to pack his bag for a work trip. Just breezed past it as if it was the most normal thing. I was like wait…why are you packing his bag for him?? She huffs and puffs about “oh he won’t do it properly” or some shit. Didn’t really have much of an answer.

Mentioned this exchange at work. Seems this is not particularly uncommon. Had women moaning about having to do “all the packing for everyone” for family holidays etc.

i am quite baffled by this. Why are some women packing their husbands bags for them..? If nothing else, my husband wouldn’t want me to pack his bag for him. Being a grown adult he’d rather choose his own clothes.

Some men are absolutely fucking useless but my god, some women really don’t help themselves…

Only if I was kicking him out 😄

Love it!

No way! Why would I pack the bag of a grown man?!

Exactly. I can’t get my head round women who do this - crazy.

Loulou4022 · 02/06/2026 08:31

Nope! He’s a grown up and can pack his own bag!

I mean you don’t even have to do this. We normally share a case between us, I pack my own stuff in one half he packs his. Easy peasy.

No, I don't "have" to but it's hardly onerous and more than half the stuff in our shared case is mine as a general rule anyway. DH travels much lighter than me.
It feels a bit petty to me to refuse to do a trivial task for someone you love when you are doing it for yourself anyway. Equal division of labour doesn't have to mean dividing every task in half or only doing your own thing. DH does lots of stuff around the house that I don't contribute to at all, and there are plenty of things he has done far more than half of over the years, for example about 85% of school runs. Putting his socks in the weekend bag whilst I'm putting my own in is hardly going to hurt me and is efficient use of time.

Redsparklybucket · 02/06/2026 08:31

My mum used to pack for my dad and my sister packs for my BIL, they think I'm odd in not doing it - but my husband can sort his own things out, he also packs for the kids if he is taking them away without me.

However I always pack a belt and cuff links in my bag if I think they will be needed as I have spent too many detours or being left on an early morning before a wedding/party etc as he is racing off to get these things!

A holiday can be ruined by bringing the wrong thing, a top that doesn't quite fit, a too heavy jumper, bringing the dental floss that's not as nice, choosing the wrong set of books you are reading or forgetting a particular after sun cream or your toenail clippers or a charger with a long lead. I can't see how any adult can do that for any other adult.

A holiday can be ruined by bringing the wrong dental floss?

I take it you’ve never been camping or roughed it in any way..:

TheGreatDownandOut · 02/06/2026 08:30

Ugh. Incompetent men give me the ick. I have a friend who went away for a couple of nights recently and her partner stayed home. He got strict instructions on how to look after himself before she left. They don’t have children. When she got back he expected pats on the back for making his own packed lunch 🤢

TimorousOrBold · 02/06/2026 08:30

The very idea is absolutely ludicrous.

How do you know what your dh wants to wear on holiday.? Hiw is being a middle man between him and his case efficient?

I know because we've been married for 25 years 😊. Personally I find it more efficient for me to be in charge of the whole process for a family holiday. So I do the pre-departure laundry for all four of us, and we don't have individual cases, we pack across them all. This is partly so we all have clothes if a case is delayed in transit and partly so I can divide by usage/activity if relevant. Plus DH works much longer hours than I do, so would end up doing it last minute after a long work day, whereas I have time as I finish earlier and WFH.

So that's why it's more efficient for us. Every household is different, this is what works for us and nobody resents it.

Goldengirl123 · 02/06/2026 08:26

No. I’m not his mum

AValuedFriend · 02/06/2026 08:25

A friend of mine not only packs her husband's suitcases, she buys his clothes, decides what he is going to wear each day and puts his clothes for the next day on a chair for him the night before.

They are both in their 50s and she has done this for him every day since he left his mother's house to live with her, over 30 years ago.

On the other hand, she has never filled her car with fuel, washed her car, or taken her car for a service since they met.

Neither of them is incompetent, both could easily look after themselves, they just have these weird ideas about what is his responsibility and what is hers.

PhoebeBuffay1234 · 02/06/2026 08:19

I do similar to a few PPs. If we’re sharing a case for wherever we’re going, he gets out what he needs/wants and I put it in the case. I also do things like (both of our) meds and he does other things, so we both have our allocated jobs, which just generally tends to work best.

If he’s going away on his own then absolutely not!

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/06/2026 08:18

ShillyShallySally · 02/06/2026 07:57

I dunno. I mean division of labour in general household tasks is necessary but packing is such a personal thing. I just genuinely cannot fathom an individual who would delegate their choice of clothing etc to another person.

Well my mum does virtually everything on my dad’s behalf including picking out clothes for each day!
when she was in hospital for a week all the clothes were laid out on the spare bed and ready meals were piled up in the fridge with post it notes eg “Tuesday” etc

so now he’s nearly 80 and can do barely anything for himself.

PartyQuestion30th · 02/06/2026 08:17

Nope. Though he does expect me to be weirdly interested in what he’s packed. This or this shirt? ….holding up two, to my eyes, identical blue polo shirts.

before we met he traveled for work for years…

we shared a suitcase once….just the once. It didn’t go well. He folds up worn shirts neatly, me …not so much.

Shithotlawyer · 02/06/2026 08:13

DeftGoldHedgehog · 02/06/2026 08:13

No. My mum did for my dad (though he was quite capable) but I decided I wasn't going to get into that.

Tamtim · 02/06/2026 08:13

Absolutely not. My kids don’t even want me to pack their bags anymore.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/06/2026 08:13

No but my mum does for my dad. I don’t think he’s packed a bag to go away in his life
yes he repacks to come back again but that’s easier and there is always, always something left behind

yes it’s ridiculous

dh sorts his own stuff but I end up either packing DCs stuff for them or otherwise directing them so 80% of the household packing (we often fill the car) is done by me. DH however is the master of actually fitting it into the the car once packed

gannett · 02/06/2026 08:12

Comtesse · 02/06/2026 08:10

How would you know what he wants to wear?? If I’m going on a work trip for 10 days there is no way DH would know what I would need to wear for clients dinners, workshops etc. Unthinkable! How would anyone else know what shoes you might like? Or which swimming costume you would prefer on holiday? Or which chargers/ tech he might want to take? So weird to outsource that thinking!

Exactly - I barely know ahead of time what I want to wear (which is why I tend towards overpacking) so how would he know?!

ValenciaOrangeJawline · 02/06/2026 08:11

God no. I have occasionally put the stuff he assembled on the bed into the suitcase, simply because I am better at packing using all available space.

Otherwise we have our own jobs. He does toothbrush, travel speaker and all chargers. I do “kitchen stuff” (tea bags, washing leaves, water bottles etc.).

We both then repeatedly ask each other if all the things we’ve previously forgotten on trips (swimming gear, prescription sunglasses…) are packed.

drspouse · 02/06/2026 08:11

WhySoManySocks · 02/06/2026 00:03

If we're going on a family holiday where we're sharing a suitcase then we both put our own stuff on the bed and one person is in charge of organising it into a suitcase. Could be me, could be him, I don't pick things up with my boobs so there's no reason a man couldn't do it.

Otherwise everyone packs their own bag. Massive ick for men who "can't do this".

This is what we do.
I am married to a man not a child.

gannett · 02/06/2026 08:11

I don't think it's ever occurred to me that anyone would pack their partner's bag for them until today! I'd absolutely hate it if anyone packed mine - not only do I not understand why you'd do it for your partner, I don't understand why you'd want it done by them for you? It's very important to me that I know exactly what I'm taking with me.

Obviously DP and I remind each other of essentials when we're both packing our own bags but that's just yelling out "do you have the portable charger" or whatever.

Comtesse · 02/06/2026 08:10

GreenBananaSmoothie · 02/06/2026 07:37

We had a row last year after I'd packed for me and both the kids, and the toys, swim stuff, food, kitchen equipment and the hobby equipment we needed.

DH got very grumpy because I hadn't packed for him . . . (Which I had never ever done before either and didn't I have enough to do?! And shouldn't he have helped with the rest?)

I've been suppressing slight feelings of guilt and unreasonableness on each subsequent trip, while he's packed his own stuff with a few deep sighs.

But not any more! This thread clearly tells me IANBU.

How would you know what he wants to wear?? If I’m going on a work trip for 10 days there is no way DH would know what I would need to wear for clients dinners, workshops etc. Unthinkable! NippyNinjaCrab · 02/06/2026 08:09

Although I often say my husband is a lazy fucker, i have never packed his work case for him. For a holiday he gets all his own stuff organised and I pack it in the cubes.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 02/06/2026 08:05

Hell no because I didn’t marry a baby.
No wonder young men are so bloody useless and end up alone if this is the model they are shown.

Imagine a grown woman who can’t put petrol in her car. Or make a hot drink, or make her own bed etc etc
