AIBU in worrying that my son’s trip with his “friend” isn’t so innocent

My son (26) who never goes out, has told me he is going on a trip to London over the weekend to watch a show with his friend, he says they’ve booked separate rooms but I’m worried. He’s never talked about a girl before and claims they’re just friends.

My main concern is they’re going to be in a hotel together, albeit in separate rooms as he claims… does this trip sound like it’s just so he can get together with her intermittently?

AIBU in thinking this is more than just a friend and more than an innocent hotel stay?

When my DF was 26 he had served 6 years in the armed forces, and had a wife & 2 children

TheeNotoriousPIG · 01/06/2026 18:23

Please don't interfere with this, OP. Your son is your child, and always will be, but he is an adult who needs to have his own freedom and the ability to make his own decisions.

As someone else with an overprotective mother (and, in some cases, extended family), the concern of overprotective relatives is suffocating. If anything, it encouraged me to move far enough away so that I can have the non-stop novelty of privacy and independence! It's absolutely liberating!

He's 26.

yeah. this, wtf?

Is it a typo and you mean 16? In which case I get your concern if the friend is significantly older.
But 26? DH and I were married with two kids by that age…

NotAWurstToIt · 01/06/2026 18:22

Are you the reason he doesn’t go out OP? I hope he has the best time and maybe you should find something to do this weekend whilst he’s away.

RetiredFromExplaining · 01/06/2026 18:22

The 1950s called and would like their prudery back.

mycarhasnoaircon · 01/06/2026 18:21

Surely the spycam that you sewed into his underpants will provide all the information you need?

DogsandFlowers · 01/06/2026 18:20

Rollercoaster1920 · 01/06/2026 17:21

I'd hope so at 26!

God,me too !!!

thefloorislavayes · 01/06/2026 18:19

This post has me very concerned, why on earth would this or anything related with your son's sex life be any of your business? I'm sorry OP but this post comes across as deranged

nocoolnamesleft · 01/06/2026 18:18

26 and never goes out? Unless there's a hell of a dripfeed incoming, I wish him well with his online girlfriend/boyfriend.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 01/06/2026 18:17

I hope he has a wonderful time with his girl/boyfriend away from his DM.

delicioussoo · 01/06/2026 18:15

Trying to police his sex life at 26 what a joke.

purplecorkheart · 01/06/2026 18:14

None of your beeswax!!!!

Tunnocks34 · 01/06/2026 18:13

Howling.

Leave him alone OP. He’s a full grown adult. He can do what he wants with who he wants, whenever he wants.

Bumcake · 01/06/2026 18:13

Tell us what show it was, and I’ll be able to foretell whether there will be shenanigans or not.

Wishimaywishimight · 01/06/2026 18:12

If you know what hotel they're staying in you could book yourself a room that night, check in early then wait at reception (hiding behind the desk if they'll let you) so you can hear him/them checking in. All perfectly reasonable 😆

shhblackbag · 01/06/2026 18:12

Apron strings aren't meant to reach this far into adulthood. Bizarre.

HopeIsAScaryThing · 01/06/2026 18:11

FFS

Stressmummy12 · 01/06/2026 18:11

He is 26! I had my first child at 26! What is there to be worried about this is such a weird thing to feel and say

AgnesX · 01/06/2026 18:11

What's the problem?

And it's not even the school holidays yet.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 01/06/2026 18:10

This can’t be real??!

He's 26 good on him!!! Leave him alone to let him enjoy the night away - and then reflect on your ridiculous behaviour!

Deffo a wind up.

This

Washingupdone · 01/06/2026 18:08

Let him be, but maybe give a packet of condoms to him before he leaves, just incase.
