AIBU in worrying that my son’s trip with his “friend” isn’t so innocent

My son (26) who never goes out, has told me he is going on a trip to London over the weekend to watch a show with his friend, he says they’ve booked separate rooms but I’m worried. He’s never talked about a girl before and claims they’re just friends.

My main concern is they’re going to be in a hotel together, albeit in separate rooms as he claims… does this trip sound like it’s just so he can get together with her intermittently?

AIBU in thinking this is more than just a friend and more than an innocent hotel stay?

I wonder if this thread was started by a troll, based upon it being ridiculous and that they haven’t been back since the original post.

@JosieMay1970 has made many posts on Mumsnet. I suspect she was surprised at the unanimous response to this one.

He's 26, he's not a child and if he's having sex with his friend that's not for you to be concerned or worried about. I'd personally be more concerned about why you lack of being able to accept your child is a grown up now and work to resolve those feelings.

He's 26? What is happening here? He's an adult.

Even if it were for a FWB situation, does it matter? He's 26, whether it's FWB or a burgeoning relationship it's a good thing for him either way.
I did used to see a guy who was living with his mum, he was 23 at the time. His mum disapproved of him seeing women (strict Catholic) so we could only meet in hotels.

I’m showing my age but The Who song “We Won’t Get Fooled Again” is ringing in my head.

There are so many of these, I automatically filter OP posts, if no updates I don't bother reading any further.

There is at 26.

That's incorrect. There are plenty of regions where people say mummy instead of mum. Where I'm from it's considered embarrassing and 'posh' to say mum.

This post has me very concerned, why on earth would this or anything related with your son's sex life be any of your business? I'm sorry OP but this post comes across as deranged

Yes - and if this isn't a massive troll on the windup, OP's controlling attitude might leave that poor lad vulnerable to emotional abuse when he does find someone. She needs therapy and fast.

ParmaVioletTea · 03/06/2026 09:28

Well, the OTT poster hasn't returned. Either a wind-up merchant, getting MN frothing, or a deeply troubling overly enmeshed mother who didn't like what she read.

Daftypants · 03/06/2026 09:22

Why are you worried ?
Is he SEN , or vulnerable?
If he’s a regular 26 year old man then I hope he has a nice weekend with his female or male friend.
If he’s vulnerable then I hope you’ve equipped him with some common sense ?

Fuzzymuddle33 · 03/06/2026 09:17

He’s 26! Good on him if they are more than friends.

Retro12 · 03/06/2026 08:44

None of your business i'm afraid!

dh280125 · 03/06/2026 08:40

Let's all hope you are right. 26, never goes out? This could be the making of him.

Bananalanacake · 03/06/2026 06:26

I was 23 when I moved to London and I don't recall my mother controlling who I went to hotels with.

Chickadee001 · 03/06/2026 05:59

He's more than old enough to make his own decisions without his Mummy's permission! Cut those apron strings!

GreenSedan · 03/06/2026 05:55

What have I just read?

StarlightLady · 03/06/2026 05:50

I’ve seen some strange threads on MN over the years but this one beats them all.

Mummamap · 03/06/2026 05:47

Has he never been away before? Not to university or on holiday? I have two kids younger than your son and they both go away. They are over the age of 18 and adults, of course I want them safe, but they have to have a private life.

SpottyDeckchair · 03/06/2026 01:02

YABU
He's 26 & an adult & it's none of your business.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/06/2026 08:39

Not according to others who have found her other posts unfortunately.

Then they are probably all wind ups. Light blue touchpaper and retire 😂

Delphiniumandlupins · 03/06/2026 00:09

Also, it's possible to make friends with people without going out.

Delphiniumandlupins · 03/06/2026 00:07

I don't understand your use of the words worried and innocent. Why are you concerned about your adult son staying in the same hotel as his friend? Is the friend definitely a woman? What would be wrong with them having a physical relationship?

GingersOwner26 · 02/06/2026 23:45

If he’s 26, that’s his business.
