AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon is deflecting criticism with sexism claims?

Nicola Sturgeon is cosplaying the victim, claiming that her being questioned over her ex husband's criminality is anti-women.
Is she seriously playing the woman card, when she actively deflected any criticism or investigation into SNP finances?

I don’t necessarily agree. She should have had it pointed out to her as an area that needed looking at. As her husband had put the figures together she might have felt she could just sign them off. What the excuses were from the others is another matter.

You don’t work in finance do you? The NEC WERE raising questions about the accounts. The treasurer refused to sign them off. There were plenty of red flags that something was wrong. Year she viciously shut them down.

So many MNetters making her responsible for this man’s crimes.

She’s right, it’s bloody sexist.

Nobody is disputing her husband’s guilt and wrongdoing. But at the very least, Sturgeon has some serious questions to answer. She is deflecting as always to paint herself as a victim.

This was not a wee house wife whose husband was up to no good. She was his boss and had ultimate responsibility for the SNPs finances and accounts. She literally has training in this as a solicitor.

How could she not notice 600K going missing?

Why did she not notice the campervan on the books?

Where is the other 200K?

Why did she front a campaign for money to be ring fenced but didn’t question why it just vanished? Does she not understand what ring fenced means?

Why did she not think something was wrong when other finance people in the party resigned as they felt the books were off?

The police are not perfect and there’s a lot more to come out in the wash here. Only an imbecile could believe Sturgeon’s version of events.

She needs to face trial on the charge of reset.

I'm going to go with the results of the police investigation over the machinations of people with a chip on their shoulder for whatever reason.

Plenty of women discover their husbands have been up to things they shouldn't have been, long after the fact. Plenty of women that weren't working as long hours as she had to in order to keep a country running.

Did she know? No idea, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, especially given that she faced an investigation and was cleared.

The question is: why do you doubt the police?

They’re all shite. Look at the mess the UK is in.

Agreed, there are a lot of shite politicians in the UK. In Scotland they seem especially bad. Things that piss me off:

The claim that the average worker is taxed less than in the rUK. They are. By £40 a year maximum. Anyone that earns over £43k is taxed at 42% though as they’re so rich.

Stamp duty (an incredibly economically damaging tax - kills growth) is double the rest of the UK. Such a stupid thing to do.

Indy Scotland would be an economic basket case for years. The SNP know it. Everyone else knows it. The SNP will never admit to it, will never give an economic estimate of Indy even in the vaguest of terms and so they let their knuckledragging Indy supporters think it will be sweetness and light when it would be fairly apocalyptical, esp to those on benefits. It’s so deceitful.

What is this with all the Nicola bashing?

She was investigated thoroughly, and very publicly, by the police. No charges have been brought against her. The focus should be on Murrell, not on his ex wife.

As has been pointed out the first minister for the first 5 years of Murrell's tenure if the job was Salmond. Why isn't he being pilloried in relation to Murrell's criminality?

She was investigated by a criminal justice system that is headed up by her pal, Dorothy Bain, whom she appointed to the job.

Naunet · 31/05/2026 20:01

Oh well Nic, just say you're a man and it'll all be ok, because that's how it works, isn't it love?

He’s dead, and wasn’t married to him?

I don’t think it’s sexism that drives it. I think that if Victoria Starmer was found to have embezzled Labour Party funds (I’m aware she doesn’t work for the Labour Party), people would have the same attitude towards KS as they do to NS.

Murell’s financial deception started in 2013 and Salmond resigned in 2014 after the Yes campaign defeat. So about a 1 year overlap. With Sturgeon it was 7 years plus she was literally married to and living with the man.

It’s well documented that Salmond told Sturgeon to get rid of Murrell as CEO due to a conflict of interest but Sturgeon didn’t listen. And now she says, ‘Aye, mibbie it wisnae such a guid idea after a’’

Yeah, no shit!

She was a dire politician who has run Scotland into the ground. If you think the ‘tax middle earners til the pips squeak and give all of the money away in lax benefits while public services fail’ is a UK thing, it’s like that on steroids here. I loathe the way she’s lauded by idiots like Alistair Campbell who conveniently live in England and don’t have to suffer the after affects of her shite government.

They’re all shite. Look at the mess the UK is in.

I agree I have a friend who suffered because of her husband’s condition actions. She trusted him and on hindsight shouldn’t have.
Also would the other party leaders know everything about the finance donations to their parties. Peoples purchases are not always delivered to their homes ie could the hairdryers been delivered to another address. Burrell stored the motor home at his mother’s home.

I think the concern is more whether she adequately ensured finances etc were transparent. Also how she responded when concerns were raised. The spectrum of wrongdoing isn't limited to criminality.

She will have people whose job it is to point out something strange, she isn’t expected to read 100’s of pages personally.

Many of whom resigned because they couldn’t get access to the accounts, including the auditors. At one point they couldn’t find a firm of accountants prepared to audit them.

She signed off the accounts when the treasurer refused to. She is on video viciously shitting down the NEC questioning the finances. She is culpable.

Triskellion75 · 31/05/2026 19:46

She wasn't just 'the wife' though, she was leader of the party he was embezzling. People resigned because she refused to accept there was something dodgy going on, despite multiple complaints. She's on camera belligerently shutting down any notion of the party's finances being anything but healthy.

Frankly, after trying to put an actual rapist in a women's prison she can fuck off with the 'I'm a victim of sexism' shit. And I say all this as someone who used to really admire her.

I am not a fan of her politics but she sounded completely believable to me. And, as was said before, she was already investigated. Some accusations are so unreasonable - if my husband bought a 2 grand pepper grinder , I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between that and one from tk maxx.
he bought a car, hardly a Ferrari, and he was a childless guy on a good salary. Again, hardly unbelievable.

LMAO. She claimed to never be in the kitchen of her home. She claimed not to have noticed the big fuck off motorhome on her MIL’s drive. She claimed to not have shut down questions on the finances despite being in video doing so. Believable my ass.

PropertyD · 31/05/2026 19:44

I know but even if she trusted her husband and didn’t look at the figures someone else should have drawn her attention to it. She is a scary women so maybe they didn’t want to do it. Surrounded by yes people.

Poor Nicola, how the mighty have fallen. All that finger wagging she did over BJ whilst she was living surrounded by stolen goods.

Her attempts to blame this on misogyny and sexism are ridiculous.

She knew nothing about Salmond's sex pesting and nothing about her husband's thieving. She's must be incredibly stupid if she thinks we'll fall for her Clinton esque denials.

Edited

It’s like the SNP have just discovered the word misogyny and are enjoying using it at every opportunity. See Mairi McAllan on debate night, bemoaning that she was being picked on for being female politician, when she was being picked on for talking 100% shite non-stop. The bile that they spout is only believed by their fans, and that’s cause their fans aren’t very bright. Some people actually believe Swinney will force the supermarkets to cap the price of foods!

She signed off on the accounts with the motor home clearly visible on the balance sheet, and yet she’s playing the “poor old me, I’m just a stupid ditzy woman, how am I supposed to understand balance sheets”, card. It’s pathetic. Either she knew full well what he was up to or she was the most stupid woman going. Both in my book. Dire politician, pathetic excuse for a woman.

Slight side issue but given the jewellery, expensive bags and other trinkets she has received from PM over the years, should she not be held to account for “receiving” fraudulently obtained goods, just as someone handling stolen goods would usually be.

Please take it up with Police Scotland and get back to us.

I can't imagine them not charging her with something if there was anything at all they could charge her with.
