AIBU to think my SIL was rude about my clothes?

Over the half term week we saw dh family a few times. A kids birthday party, family bbq and couple of outings to the park and pub.

I admit I’m not very fashionable , don’t really follow it and wear what I like and what suits me. For context this is what I wore each time Kids party : black 3/4 length leggings and striped vest top and converse
family bbq hibiscus pattern dress and sandals
park denim shorts and a vest top and sandals
pub same hibiscus dress (it’s very old I’ve had it years but I love it)

The first time SIL said ‘oh here’s Y2K girl’ and laughed at the dress. The second time I wore it she quietly said to me ‘a spotty dress would suit you better - polka dots are in right now’

When I wore the denim shorts she said ‘you’re brave ! They are very short ! How many years have you had those!’

When I wore the 3/4 leggings she again took me aside and said ‘let’s go shopping one day - you need some wide leg linen trousers not these leggings ! I’m surprised they even still sell them or are they vintage again ‘ and laughed?

I said to her no thanks I’m comfortable and it’s hot so I’m wearing what I like and what keeps me cool. She said ‘come on sometimes we all need a bit of a refresh!’

AIBU to think she was really rude ??? I didn’t feel hurt but just irritated.

Just reflect on the ones I have shared with you and see if you can understand what a bitchy comment it is. If you can’t, then that is a worry for you.

Oh and I did a google for 3/4 leggings and plenty came up. So they do exist! Something else you have learned today 👏

Thank goodness for you 💜 congratulations on your didactic altruism. You seem adorable.

Mannersareeverything · 01/06/2026 17:40

Quite simply this is her problem not yours.
You have no issues with your clothes. Go you!
It's a her problem not a you problem.

Is that really true though, you say you love your dress, you wore it twice in the 4 times in one week you saw them, and the word love indicates more of an emotional connection than you’re stating.

is it maybe you don’t have a lot of spare cash for clothes. Rather than don’t care past is it weather aappropriate and functional. Because it’s ok to say that to her.

I love it because it’s comfortable and cool when the weather is hot so I think I love it for how it fits and feels rather than how it looks if that makes sense. It’s just my go to ‘very hot day dress’ as it’s cotton

I just felt really annoyed I think I see clothes as functional and she sees them as expressive and to signal that she is keeping up with fashion? I just think does it fit and is it comfortable and weather appropriate 😂

Next time she makes a comment say exactly that to her.

Ooh yes, I’m a thick bitch who thinks weird thoughts. Thanks for your astute wisdom. Any more crass labels to dish out while you’re at it?

Three quarter leggings? Really? I didn’t know they still existed

Such a thick and bitchy comment. Grow up.

I adore fashion. But I don’t think that those who don’t, are depressed. What a weird way to think!

I think the PP has a point, maybe you are hurt but not admitting it to yourself even. I have a 16 year old car full of scratches. I often get comments on the state of it and me needing a new car. It doesn't bother me, I know it looks crap but I'm comfortable driving it and it gets me from A to B. You being annoyed amd writing a post suggests that you are hurt by it.

I’d be annoyed by it and might write a post but I wouldn’t be remotely hurt. OP doesn’t sound hurt she sounds irritated, and justifiably so.

Some of these replies are so off the mark! The OP has not stated that she needs or wants new clothes in fact she says she has an old dress which she loves! She has a rude arrogant SIL who throws her opinions around. That’s her only problem!

Yep. There is a large contingent on MN who have no social skills and lack emotional intelligence. I do wonder how they get on in real life, or whether it’s just online ‘bravado’ they show here.

I think SIL thinks you are very badly dressed and is embarrassed by you. It sounds as though she thinks you are stingy about spending money on clothes and are looking dated and dowdy.
Are you a bit depressed? Have you given up on caring how you look?
Your SIL is tired of seeing your hibiscus dress. She thinks you need a refresh, because you look stale.
( three quarter leggings? Really? I didn’t know they still existed. )

I think sometimes you have to be honest if a comment has hurt, rather than laughing it off. Say honestly "oh that's brought me down, I like this dress". If she carries on, then she's just a bitch.

OP, why don’t you try and find some new clothes?

Spectacularly misses the point.

SheDoesntEvenGoHerex · 01/06/2026 13:58

Love the whole Y2K vibe, she's just jealous she can't pull it off! 😂

Seriously, just wear what you want and take no notice of her. If she likes to keep up with fashion and follow the latest trends, no problem, but she shouldn't push that on to you unless you ask for her too!

My SIL is very much 'wear what she wants' rather than what's in fashion, but she's the one wearing it so i'd never say a word!

dayslikethese1 · 01/06/2026 13:57

You're being very sustainable by not chucking out all your clothes every 5 minutes in the name of "fashion". If you're happy with your look, she should leave you alone.

ToTheRamen · 01/06/2026 13:49

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/06/2026 13:28

She should keep quiet because its none of her business. Would you appreciate this kind of input? However perfect you think your style is there will be someone who doesn't like it.

You are definitely right! Actually I saw a friend yesterday that laughed at my dress! The thing is, I just don’t mind, my style isn’t her style, and that’s ok. She looks great. I just look like me.

last year a different friend gave me eye cream! She obviously thought I looked knackered, and she was right. I’ve started using eye cream. I do look less knackered, which is actually nice, I realised I was being a bit defeatist about aging and had stopped bothering. She is very into Botox and fillers and so on, I’m not, but I did see myself through her eyes and pulled my socks up a bit, and feel better for it.

Wearing items that old will look dated

...and people should care about that why?

Instructions · 01/06/2026 13:46

She was very rude.

Quite a few people can be, and they really seem to believe that what they think about other people's clothes justifies that rudeness, as if their feelings about whether or not something is fashionable are in any way important to anyone other than them.

So?

ToTheRamen · 01/06/2026 13:43

SlightlyAjar · 01/06/2026 13:26

But if she were ‘open-minded and kind’, and of average intelligence, she would surely recognise that unsought advice is insulting and extremely rude.

If she’s open minded and kind , the world is a mirror and she doesn't anticipate hostile judgements.

Notsosweetcaroline · 01/06/2026 13:41

rockthemix · 01/06/2026 13:35

Yes of course, but she’s happy with that.

BreakingWaves · 01/06/2026 13:37

I agree it's not jealousy, I never understand why people jump to that any time someone is nasty.

SIL is being nasty though. It's not comparable to women on here asking for help, the OP didn't ask. Nor is it (as someone said) comparable to telling someone they smell! Smell affects other people, clothes do not (unless the clothes are actually indecent).

I would just keep repeating that I'm not interested in following fashions and really don't care what's "in" right now.
