AIBU to think my SIL was rude about my clothes?

Over the half term week we saw dh family a few times. A kids birthday party, family bbq and couple of outings to the park and pub.

I admit I’m not very fashionable , don’t really follow it and wear what I like and what suits me. For context this is what I wore each time Kids party : black 3/4 length leggings and striped vest top and converse
family bbq hibiscus pattern dress and sandals
park denim shorts and a vest top and sandals
pub same hibiscus dress (it’s very old I’ve had it years but I love it)

The first time SIL said ‘oh here’s Y2K girl’ and laughed at the dress. The second time I wore it she quietly said to me ‘a spotty dress would suit you better - polka dots are in right now’

When I wore the denim shorts she said ‘you’re brave ! They are very short ! How many years have you had those!’

When I wore the 3/4 leggings she again took me aside and said ‘let’s go shopping one day - you need some wide leg linen trousers not these leggings ! I’m surprised they even still sell them or are they vintage again ‘ and laughed?

I said to her no thanks I’m comfortable and it’s hot so I’m wearing what I like and what keeps me cool. She said ‘come on sometimes we all need a bit of a refresh!’

AIBU to think she was really rude ??? I didn’t feel hurt but just irritated.

Those sound like the outfits of a woman who is confident in her body and can carry off items that some other women feel they can't. Sometimes some women try to put women like that down if they don't feel the same way about themselves.

Rude cow.

"Did you mean to say that out loud?"

ohyesido · 31/05/2026 17:34

Very bitchy

Loulou4022 · 31/05/2026 17:34

She’s very rude!!

Iwanttobeafraser · 31/05/2026 17:32

It sounds like she thinks you need to update your style and that you might need help to do it. And it also sounds like her intentions are good - she's not being rude out loud in front of other people etc.

But she's clearly got the hide of a rhino - a normal person, after the first comment not getting much of a response, would back away and accept that you don't need or want any help with your look.

Turnitoffnonagain · 31/05/2026 17:29

She sounds tedious and I would tell her to bore off.

Yellowpapersun · 31/05/2026 17:27

If she tries to tell you what's "in", say "No thanks I'm not a sheep. Funny, because you're a massive cow!"

Cranta · 31/05/2026 17:24

I love style and fashion but couldn’t care less what friends and family wear. It would not cross my mind to critique someone. She is very very rude and I would have to say something. Who the hell does she think she is?

And as for awful linen trousers, I honestly wouldn't want to be cremated in them!

Agreed, and a polka dot dress!

Peterdottir · 31/05/2026 17:23

YANBU. What a cow!

toomuchfaff · 31/05/2026 17:22

Next time she says something underhand and laughs, ask her to explain the joke?

Next time she says you should wear X - tell her you didn't ask her opinion or need it and that youre good as you are. Thank, but no thanks.

If she says something is in right now say you couldn't give a monkey hoot whats "in"

lazyarse123 · 31/05/2026 17:22

Tell her to mind her own business, you are happy and comfortable shame she's so shallow.

Sunnydaysarehereagain2026 · 31/05/2026 17:21

Sil it is a shame you can't get personality alterations isn't it? You bloody need one.

TFImBackIn · 31/05/2026 17:20

I think it depends what she's like about other things, really. How is she with you usually?

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 31/05/2026 17:17

And as for awful linen trousers, I honestly wouldn't want to be cremated in them!

SequinsandSolerosInTheSummertime · 31/05/2026 17:17

She probably means well/just wants to revamp you/mini-me, if she's into all that, rather than being a Trinny/Susannah mean girl (am giving her benefit of doubt) so I'd just smile and wave, smile and wave...
Rinse, repeat, move on.
Fwiw, I am on your side. I am you. You know what you like and you aren't shallow, you prefer comfort and reuse as opposed to discomfort and fast fashion. It's fine xx

Evaka · 31/05/2026 17:17

She's off her tits. Next time ask her why she thinks your clothing is her business. What a looper.

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 31/05/2026 17:16

Of course she was rude.

But you need to tell her firmly you're not interested in her opinions.

It's just a shame that you clearly are.

Cosyblankets · 31/05/2026 17:15

Extremely rude
