People from other countries - they’re just better than us, aren’t they?

I’m on holiday in the Balkans and like everytime I go overseas, it’s difficult not to conclude people from other countries are just better than us.

Immaculately kept, litter free, great service in bars and restaurants by experienced staff, polite well behaved kids eating out in restaurants, not a screen in sight. Everyone generally better looking, better dressed.

Or do I have rose tinted holiday goggles on?

I am a Slavic woman living in the UK but travel frequently all over Europe. I agree with this post entirely.

The “Brits abroad” type have ruined the reputation of British people in Europe unfortunately, and are generally stereotyped as classless.

Also agree that Europeans are better looking, have a more natural softer appearance and are slimmer. Food in European countries are not always low calorie (Italy for example), however the people there demonstrate more discipline with food. They eat much smaller portions and do not snack.

Such a sweeping statement. All of Europe are better looking and slimmer than British people? Wow. I’m pretty sure attractive and unattractive people exist in every country.

Sartre · 01/06/2026 06:51

Have you been anywhere beyond the usual tourist stretches? Into housing estates for example? I ask because I feel as though as a tourist, you tend to stick to the main strips which are (for obvious reasons) maintained better, more secure, seem more “perfect” on the surface which can create an idealised image of the place. When you go beyond this, you often find desperate poverty and all that brings.

I can give a few examples. One is closer to home in Oxford actually. I lived there for a while, everyone thinks of it as being this amazing Harry Potter utopia for some reason. When you live in a place, the rose tints come off. I went running one day and ended up in the Rose Hill estate by accident… It’s probably about a 3k walk from the centre so tourists wouldn’t end up there intentionally, but it’s there nevertheless.

Naples is another example. It’s been regenerated a lot over the past few years, granted but Scampia is still struggling. Again an estate on the periphery so tourists don’t see it.

I believe the Americans admire British actors because they are much better trained in the art.

You see it in Youtube comments, they love those from the "old school" of acting, like Patricia Routledge, and they write comments such as "I could listen to Joanna Lumley speak all day!"

I think the average British person is fine. The problem is that we have a disproportionate number of chavs who display loud, loutish behaviour and show the rest of us up. I also think that British people are, unfortunately, not as good looking, on average, compared to most other countries. Not sure why, but I suspect that it’s partly the climate, lack of exercise, poor diet etc. Also, lots of people with appalling dress sense, who insist that they should be able to ‘wear what they want’, even when the that involves everything hanging out on display!

Well, I spent the first 21 years of my life in France and I am French so I find it amusing that you would call my opinion ''uniformed' (which I assume means 'uninformed'...).

Yes I stand corrected on the uninformed spelling. I have done things the other way round to you and have lived very happily in Paris for 40 years. So how long did you live in the French capital ? You must know that many people move to paris or lle de France for work? At what point do they become so arrogant and entitled ? Or is it just their kids?

AlexStocks · 31/05/2026 22:51

Come on over to America. It's a shit show here. I feel what you describe every time I come to the UK. It's the vacation goggles, I think.

Greenwitchart · 31/05/2026 22:46

Parisienne123 · 31/05/2026 18:57

Mm you and they are kind of wrong though. It’s a bit like the UK saying that about Londoners. Just a bit of a lazy uniformed statement tbh.

She is English, or from the UK anyway. I hope she's ok actually I don't think she's very happy.

I think people are kinder than you think Scarlett maybe let them in a bit.

I think if you are friendly to people you usually get something back. I imagine she is showing her feelings in her face.

We Brits have a fantastic film and TV industry; and I think many of our shows are much better than American ones.

The director of the French film Amelie said that there is very little film industry in France; most of the studio scenes were filmed in Germany. He also said that they had to do a lot of “cleaning up” litter and other detritus in Paris to make it presentable, especially in the train station.

Every country will present their good side to the rest of the world. The other stuff… they don’t talk about that.

I believe the Americans admire British actors because they are much better trained in the art.

Well let's just say in my workplace for example, there a mixture of nationalities. The English people that work there are all the coldest ones. Very difficult to have any kind of a chat with them. They are all cold

Maybe just maybe it might be you?

Coffeeandbooks88 · 31/05/2026 22:33

Scarlettjune · 31/05/2026 21:53

It is coldness.

Open your hearts.

Maybe they can sense the true you. If you were a bit more warm you would get it back. Plenty of English in the north are friendly.

Yes it’s awful. Obviously you do know that it isn’t all ‘the French’ though don’t you? Like Brits most people are generally decent including the French.

Yes of course. But I am trying to say, no people overseas are not better than us. That was just one tiny example. There are also wonderful people in France and here too.

Yes, the vast majority of the human race are decent. It's always the horrible ones that make the news.

Pistachiocake · 31/05/2026 22:15

Some are, some aren't. Just like anywhere in the UK.

MrsHattie · 31/05/2026 20:22

Come on, I’d love to agree but we do have an issue with that.

I'm not saying that we don't, I just think the perception is exacerbated by the assumption that every rowdy holiday maker is a Brit.

The Spanish have always stood out to me, whether in Italy, Croatia, Finland, and in Spain too.

MissFancyDay · 31/05/2026 22:14

Parisienne123 · 31/05/2026 22:05

Oh but the food in Rome… so delicious, and those beautiful churches behind ordinary doors, and walking on stones that ancient Romans walked on.. That’s what I remember not graffiti or litter And what you mainly remember most about French tourist towns is dog shit? Blimey.

I don't think that many people can argue that Italy is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries on earth. However the last time that I went there with two male friends, we took a bus in Rome and they ended up having to surround me to stop the groping hands from complete strangers.

As I said, good and bad in all countries, this one is no exception.

Parisienne123 · 31/05/2026 22:14

Vivienne1000 · 31/05/2026 22:08

Well having seen how France reacted to their WIN in the European Championships, literally vandalising their own country, no I don’t think that. I think most British people are decent.

I agree op. We’ve gone to shit and we’re not going to be able to fix it if we can’t admit it.

Well this is a sweeping generalisation. No we have not all gone to shit. I live in rural SE England, a part of the country which is stereotypically unfriendly and it’s anything but. I haven’t found other parts of England unfriendly either, including London.

Yes you're originally from the UK (like the Polish people are originally from Poland in your example) and are now trying to say you're a foreigner in the UK.

On what thread? Im on loads of threads. Use your brain. I can be both. people for example who moved here from Poland and lived in UK for a long time, will say they are originally from Poland, and now they are from the UK.

They would not then describe themselves as being foreign when in Poland.
