To consider cancelling my holiday because of the EES?

I just can’t cope with this stress. I will be travelling alone and I can’t afford (literally or mentally) to miss a flight because of this system.

I just don’t want to go. It’s looming over me. I did it in February going into Norway, but that makes no difference. You’re still in the queue for hours. I’m flying with Ryanair and they only open their bag drop 2 hours before, they’re now saying three hours to get through. So it’ll be literally impossible.

You're being ridiculous. I went to the Netherlands last week via Stansted and the EES was a 30 minute queue after the flight (about average for passport control anyway) and we walked straight up to a desk in Eindhoven coming back.

I do think 30 minutes is a long queue but not worth cancelling a holiday over, just a bit annoying.

What’s the point of him if he’s not going to help his citizens

Are you, in fact, an actual child?

It would explain your toddler-like intransigence, your lack of understanding of current travel advice and experience, your total lack of any insight into international politics, and the fact you’re tantrumming about missing a holiday, which would only come about if you decide to cut off your nose to spite your face.

Telling you to grow up would be rude, but entirely appropriate here.

Because the Airbnb cut off for check in is midnight. Normally would be fine. Now the government is spineless and allowing this to happen, it’s not going to be fine.

You just contact the host and say it will be later? That’s what normally happens.

Rejoining would be a start. Signing a deal that allows us easier movement. Closer ties. Not crying about a football match.

I just can’t believe you’re getting yourself into this over a few airport queues. Honestly it sounds like you’d prefer to cut off your own nose to spite your face because “Brexit” than think sensibly about your forthcoming holiday. I think you could do with some support as you seem completely fixated on this and unable to see the wood for the trees. Have you discussed this with your GP?

In the long term, the UK may rejoin the EU but it will be a hugely drawn out process (a) because it has to be done in a democratic way (remember the country did vote to leave in 2016), and (b) because it is a political danger zone- if Labour made this a policy now, they would be handing the country to reform, no question. You have got to find a way to live with this for the foreseeable future and deal with it.

KoiTetra · 01/06/2026 10:07

Op, assuming this is real you honestly need medical help.

Firstly, there is a chance something will go wrong of course, but 99% of people out there are very happy to take that chance and the vast majority of them are making their flights just fine.

Secondly, if you did end up split up from your suitcase, yes it is a huge inconvenience but to say its the end of the world is just an insane overreaction. No one is going to die from a missing suitcase (even if you had life saving drugs in there you could get to a hospital).

Your reaction is extremely unhealthy and does need looking at, this must be affecting your whole life.

It’s not like an Amazon prime subscription. You can’t just switch in & out on a whim. This is the point of democracy. You engage with what the political parties say they stand for, and you vote accordingly. The extent to which you agree with Brexit isn’t relevant. On the day of the referendum, the majority voted to leave. If you think he can just call up Brussels and say ‘these queues are ridiculous! My citizens are losing 3hrs of their holidays in a line, we want back in IMMEDIATELY’. Then you’re a fool.

Helping you avoid an extra 20 min of queuing is probably a lowish priority compared with all the other things he will be working on to help citizens - you know like trying to grow the economy to reverse the biggest impact from brexit.

Is it?

It’s been how long and still nothing has been negotiated? Queues of tourists at the border, people missing connections, and flights. Bad enough to make national news. But all he cares about is Arsenal.

What do you want negotiating? We left the eu and are therefore being treated like all the other non-eu countries. I am definitely not in favour of brexit but why when we made that choice should we expect special treatment. If you want to blame someone then blame the people who took us out of the Eu, not the current government who was against it.

JustMyView13 · 01/06/2026 08:59

What help do you suggest? We lost our seat at the table when we left the EU. What exactly do you want him to do to ‘help’ prevent you from having to queue?

So all the people saying they've missed flights are lying then?

And all the people reporting long queues at airports and ports also lying?

OK I'm prepared to accept that media reports can be exaggerated but they were also reporting long queues at the Channel ports last weekend - I know it was the bank holiday and start of May half term in England and Wales, but the system should be able to cope.

The channel crossing chances were always going to be difficult to implement. Everything was drive through before, but now everyone will have to get our of their cars. Very different scenario to airports.

You really are still being so ridiculously dramatic about this. Either go on your holiday or don’t. Just get there early and you’ll be fine. I can not see any reason at all why you are involving Keir Starmer or football in this. Do you think he’s causing the queue somehow?

Goodness me, how ever did we manage back in ye olden days when passport control was in operation everywhere?

Far fewer people flew!

The first time I flew anywhere (early 70s), you only had to be there about 45 minutes before departure time. Airports weren't heaving like they are now.

Part of me is convinced that all this getting there early is a ruse to make you spend loads of money in airport shops and bars. They're actually shopping centres where you can get a flight.

@ChiliFiend

i guess we don’t know what would have been negotiated, but i’m spanish and whenever i travel between EU countries, you just get off the plane and there are no border checks.

whenever i travelled from the UK,
even before Brexit, there were border checks, so it’s always been worse for UK citizens/UK originating flights.

Maray1967 · 01/06/2026 08:03

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:58

It’s Starmer’s fault that he’s more bothered about Arsenal losing a game of football than he is about negotiating a deal with the EU as soon as possible to get this sorted.

That is ridiculous.

I googled it and the answer provided was:

No, UK citizens would not have had to do these new border checks if the UK had remained in the EU.
The new digital border procedures—such as the Entry/Exit System (EES) which requires biometric fingerprints and facial scans—are exclusively designed for "third-country" (non-EU) nationals.
Because EU citizens are exempt from these third-country requirements, remaining in the EU or its open-border Schengen Area would have preserved free movement, meaning UK citizens would continue to use standard passport control or e-gates.
The new checks only apply to British passport holders because the UK is no longer an EU member state.

this new process affects those outside the Schengen area, which the UK was never part of.

even if we were still in the EU, it would still affect UK nationals.

many people have pointed this out in the thread and it takes a 2 second google search to corroborate.

Why would they care? They get the money for the fares and then fly an emptier plane. And this is Ryanair - they really don't give a stuff about passengers.

I'm with you OP - I think putting up with it on the outward journey is one thing, as you've arrived and it's just an annoying wait and you then have the holiday.

But it's the return that would bother me - I'd be fretting the whole time.

I've just been away but used Eurostar, which was no bother in either direction.

I was thinking about a Schengen country for later in the year but might go to Ireland instead.

Could you change your plans to go to Ireland instead?

But you still have to do the EES on eurostar

Vartden · 31/05/2026 20:17

I think its an understandable worry. The queues were long when we came back from Italy this week and you need to drop your bags as soon as you can. The airport had given up on the new system and were just pushing us through. It was half term though so a busy period. I wouldn't not go on holiday though. The airports are trying to manage the problem.
