Would you tell a woman her gym leggings were see through?

Regular gym class. Behind a woman today who was wearing black leggings, looked fine when she was standing but as soon as she bent over they were completely see through, almost like a pair of 30 denier tights. Could see colour and shape of underwear. Would you have told her at end of class?

I was planning on doing but she was chatting to another class member at the end and stayed on for the next class so couldn't grab her outside. Feel bad now but also wasnt sure how she would react??

To clarify - I have never spoken to her. I think, like me, she goes every week, but we have never chatted

Then no

I’m always baffled at how many people (a) notice these things and (b) think it’s okay to comment to a complete stranger - why not just look away?

I would want to know, definitely tell her unless she gives off unreasonable stranger vibes

‘unreasonable stranger’ vibes? Do you mean ‘don’t pick me up on my choice of clothing because I’m an adult and it has nothing to do with you’?

I just wonder how she would feel, being picked up on this by someone she doesn’t know? If she doesn’t know then she’s going to be mortified but if she does, what can she say? ‘Oh thanks, yes I know’? Because there is implied judgement from the OP.

If you do tell her, own that you are doing it because you disapprove, not that you want to spare her feelings. People who care how they look tend to look in mirrors so would be aware in any case

BuildbyNumbere · 31/05/2026 13:14

No I wouldn’t

I've always assumed that women who do this are doing it on purpose. How could you not know your leggings are see through?

I know - i see it so often with female cyclists, never male

I'd want to know and would be grateful to know at the end rather than in the middle!

I once had a dilemma leaving school of a small 5-6 year old girl with the whole back of her dress tucked into her pants as we were leaving for the end of the day. I was worried her mum would be cross I'd 'seen' (I'm female but you never know what accusations you'll get these days) but I was more worried about the 100 odd other parents seeing so I told her mum and she whipped it down.

Nope. Saw a woman out shopping yesterday with cycling shorts and I could actually see the shape of her public hair.

Perfect typo!

Remindmeofthebabee · 31/05/2026 11:31

I think it’s how you deliver it.

I came back from a yoga class the other month and I was bent down getting something out of a kitchen drawer and DH asked me if I knew my new yoga leggings went completely see through when I bent over.

I was mortified as I’d been at the front of the class and obviously had no idea. I tried to bend over in front of a mirror to check myself but I couldn’t see it, I asked him to take a photo and low and behold you could see my entire bum. I haven’t worn them pants to class since but if DH hadn’t told me I definitely would have!

I’d have been happy if someone gave me a heads up as long as it wasn’t done in an eye roll manner.

The skin coloured ones are the worst. Why do people wear them everyday and not just for the gym. They always look awful on young or old.

Edited

The skin coloured ones always make me look twice because why does it look like they are walking naked 😭

Were they old and raggy? If so yes. Tell her to save her from the moment of legging failure which could be imminent. I’ve had old leggings fail while spinning. It’s not a party I wish to attend again.

But that’s her problem if it happens. I hate this idea that people think it acceptable to comment on stuff like that

Whatthefork1 · 31/05/2026 11:21

i would tell a friend, but I wouldn’t tell a stranger.

Anarchy99 · 31/05/2026 11:21

Absolutely don’t tell her. It’s nothing to do with you. I would be really pissed off if someone randomer came up and said something like that to me. It’s certainly not a kind thing to do.

She probably already knows seems to be a fad atm

It's horrible when you have to witness this.

It’s horrible to see the outline of someone’s pants?

maybe a thong but big pants are fine!

tbh I get more incensed but thong and “cheeky” swimwear. Often get more than eyeful as I am getting it my 40 laps and is hate it.

TheRealMagic · 30/05/2026 12:59

I don't think it's kind either. As a general rule, I only think it's kind to tell a stranger that there is something wrong with their outfit if they can fix it instantly (knickers tucked into skirt, clothes tag hanging out, buttons misaligned). It isn't kind if they are stuck how they are until they get home.

I like this approach and mindset

FieryA · 30/05/2026 21:58

No. Some women wear such leggings on purpose. And even if she didn't, it's really her responsibility to ensure that her underwear is not visible. I wouldn't say anything, unless it was torn.

TheRealMagic · 30/05/2026 21:28

Breadcat24 · 30/05/2026 16:16

i did and she continued to wear them week after week- I think she liked the attention. Particularly grim if behind her in spin

Or she just didn't care?

One of the reasons I think it's not kind to tell her is that she might feel expected to stop wearing them/judged if she continues wearing them, despite actually thinking it's fine herself.

EmeraldRoulette · 30/05/2026 18:19

@mathanxiety for context

A woman walked past dressed in that kind of way

One of them asked the other "how would you feel if your girlfriend dressed like that?"

And the reply was "I think it's quite cute, I would be alright with that"

And the first guy said "no I would not like that...there's something about it, that just isn't quite right."

I realise it sounds horrible, but it was actually okay. I think they probably would've had a different conversation if they weren't maybe three women standing at the bus stop?

they were very non-intimidating and I say that as somebody who is easily intimidated.

this was outside a local college so they would've been 16 - 18. I would say it was a conversation for indoors though!

mathanxiety · 30/05/2026 17:19

EmeraldRoulette · 30/05/2026 14:33

I see so much of this I can only assume that people know and that it's a trend.

I overheard two lads at the bus stop discussing it -with one saying that he's fine if his girlfriend dresses like that and the other saying absolutely not. It must be a choice.

so no, I wouldn't say anything.

There is a lot more wrong with the mindset of teenage boys talking like this than the see through leggings.

OchreReader · 30/05/2026 17:19

EarringsandLipstick · 30/05/2026 14:23

That’s a mad thing to be mortified about! I often wear coloured bras underneath light coloured tops, deliberately, including for work. I like the look.

This was years ago and it most people would have classed it as a wardrobe malfunction at that time (except my forward thinking colleague). Perhaps I unwittingly started a trend 🤣

mathanxiety · 30/05/2026 17:15

No.

Just look away if it bothers you.
