To delay Mirena Coil fitting - because of upcoming event?

I’m due to get a Mirena fitting next week. 10 days later I have a big family wedding to attend for a weekend.

Reading lots about spotting, and heavier bleeding for weeks after insertion, I’m wondering whether to delay a month as I really could do without that over that weekend as I can be a really heavy bleeder and my dresses are all very pale!

Currently, wedding should fall mid cycle - all being regular.

I think it was the week after my period that I had it fitted. Good luck x

Delay it OP. I’m on week 2 post fitting and having heavy bleeds and generally struggling to do all my normal tasks. I have a party tomorrow and realise I’ll have to stay for a shorter time than intended.

This is exactly my worry.. thank you for sharing. Next month I also have some major work projects but at least I can wear black..!

I had mine fitted last year when I was 44 mainly for the progesterone part of HRT, I’d started to have changes in my periods, much heavier but shorter periods and flooding. I had some spotting and wore a pad but I don’t think for very long and I’ve not had any bleeding since 16 months in now.
HRT in general has been life changing for me. I was a bit wary of getting the mirena and when the nurse called to see if she could fit me in for a cancellation I told her I was a bit worried and she was amazing taking me through it all and how brilliant it is for the vast majority of women. So glad I had it done.

Thank you. That sounds so positive ! I’m
already on HRT and it has made a big difference for me on many other levels, but still need to tackle these horrendous periods!
do you remember at what stage of cycle you had it fitted?

Sounds perfect..!
did you have heavy periods before?

Sometimes they were heavy but short and sometimes light but went on forever. Sometimes 5 weeks and sometimes 3 weeks apart. So sporadic it made planning impossible.

This is my second Mirena fitted. It is so worth the uncomfortable feeling of having it fitted!

I don't think this is uncommon - I bled for four months, and had pain. It wasn't just 'spotting' either. Had it removed and the bleeding and pain stopped the next day. I would delay it until after the wedding, just to be on the safe side.

That’s my thinking too. Thanks for sharing

You can't predict as everyone is so different. So I'd delay. I had v heavy periods and have bled on and off heavily since insertion 3 wks ago. Also in perimenopause

I bled for 6 months after mine was fitted 🤷‍♀️

I had the Mirena fitted a few months ago and had a couple of days of very light spotting afterwards. I just wore period pants as they're so comfortable.

I haven't particularly had a period since. It's been brilliant. The hormone side has helped with peri symptoms too!

Sounds perfect..!

Thanks - may I ask - when in your cycle did you have your first inserted, and did you bleed at all after?

in fact if anyone else shares/contributes - would be really interesting if people could share:

  1. what your periods & pain were like before mirena
  2. at what point in your cycle you had it inserted
  3. details on bleeding etc following insertion and when/if you still bleed

thanks all - I think I will just wait but would just be useful to know anyway

Sorry no idea it was about 17 years ago

ive had no kids so insertion was very painful, but quick

i think I had a bit of light spotting for a few days, but that was all

I have Adenomyosis and had one fitted last year. No idea as to which point in my cycle as v erratic (peri). No issues at all and only light spotting for a few weeks after insertion. I’d just get it done!

enjoy the wedding 💍

Had very heavy and flooding periods and eventually had womb ablation.

It was light bleeding for 6 months, then I carried on having light periods monthly. The coil threads made me itch like hell so it felt like I had thrush.

Endured it for 18 months, the itching magically stopped the day after I had it out.

Thanks for the detail. Never heard that about the threads being itchy.
Sorry to hear it didnt work well for you

I got mine due to unmanageable heavy painful periods. I had a light period for about a week and cramping for a few days then I was fine. I wouldn't delay personally.

Very interesting and hopeful!

Would you mind sharing at what point in your cycle you had insertion and also roughly how old you are? Or if you’re in peri/menopause etc?

I had one fitted and apart from a little discomfort during the fitting, I had no problems. I will add that I have never suffered from heavy periods or tummy ache

Thank you for adding that info re not having period pain before anyway etc. It’s important i think! Unfortunately I am getting one because of heavy painful periods and it does make sense that one’s previous history affects the outcome.

If it was me I’d delay it since it’s not that long a delay, and it’d give you peace of mind for the wedding - I got the Mirena fitted in January and I had some bleeding and spotting every day for around 6 weeks, plus intermittent cramping. The first period I got after getting it fitted was still pretty heavy (I got it to manage my heavy periods), but it’s thankfully totally settled down now and my periods are way lighter! However, as I say, the spotting and bleeding for that first while was annoying. Everyone is different though of course!

Thanks for the info. This seems to be the common story.. hence wanting to delay..!
