Is anyone else concerned about the number of children and babies out and about with no head coverings or shade in this incredibly hot weather?
would you say anything?

Their is always going to be someone that finds something to moan about.
Kids with screens.
Kids to loud out side.
Kids with no hats.
Walking dogs in the sun even if its late in the evening.
Walk your dog take dog out your dog nearlt bit me take it home ffs cant win.
Kids eating junk food ffs not all parent restrict their kids to a burger and a bag of crisp once a month.
Loud kids bring them in your kids on screens send then out parents cant fucking win.

I dont even have kids but somethings i read just blows my mind.

Our non compliant child wore hats that were tied on. Simple.

@BrightonBelle1992 i would probably say something if it was clear the child was suffering. I've certainly chucked suncream on plenty of random kids backs on holiday, it always amazes me how many adults just sit round the pool bar and abandon their kids then moan they're sick!

Our dd15 is away doing her dofe practice walk and I'm worrying like hell about her, she really suffers in the heat, got sunstroke last year in much cooler weather, hoping the paths have enough shade. She had set an alarm for every 20 mins to reapply suncream.

If you put sun cream on my “random child” you could kill her due to allergies. Keep your hands off other people’s kids!!!

How are people keeping hats on their toddlers? Asking for me

Duck tape but im sure they would get that off, toddlers are craffty little things.

ToffeePennie · 28/05/2026 17:41

Yeah my 8 year old adhd kid just cannot keep a hat on his head. Even tried the tied ones, he still lost it.
I just don’t let my kids out during the hottest part of the day, slap loads of suncream on them before they do go outside in it and make sure they have plenty of fluid when they come home.
Also I can’t force my autistic 11 year old to wear a hat since his old beanie was destroyed by a dog - he won’t touch anything else on his head. So what am I supposed to do?

Familyandmore · 28/05/2026 17:39

Same!

Op you may see no hat, but there's probably a parent with that child that has tried a million times and given up.

My immediate thoughts!

Backedoffhackedoff · 28/05/2026 17:38

I can’t say I’d be worried. My children don’t wear hats in the uk

You put suncream on random kids you don't know? What if they were allergic? There's a reason schools and nurseries ask for permission and schools get the kids to do it themselves.

Factor 50 lasts longer than 20 minutes also.

How are people keeping hats on their toddlers? Asking for me

Hard relate. My 4yo son lives in his hat, but my 2yo daughter refuses to wear it. She's happy to wear sun cream and sun glasses but the hat just gets thrown straight back in my face :) if anyone sees us out and about and she's not wearing a hat, mind ya business. Cannot believe there are some people who would confrontationally ask another parent things like why their child isn't wearing a hat. It has absolutely nothing to do with you, unless they are obviously in immediate danger and about to die from heat exhaustion.

Twisterlollies · 28/05/2026 17:31

Please use mineral suncream on your precious babies and toddlers everyone!

chatgptmeup · 28/05/2026 17:31

I live in a hot climate and as long as my children are wearing suncream all over and have it with them to reapply then they are just fine. Hats are great too when they'll put them on. They haven't come home sunburned yet.

Re. coverings, my friend's baby stopped breathing because she was napping covered in a muslin cloth in the heat, thank god for paramedics who saved her.Covering babies too much can actually be really dangerous in this weather.

fairydustt · 28/05/2026 17:27

I have an 8 month old, I slather him in suncream but this is abit like when older ladies worry about babies with no socks on, I’m sorry.. I try.. but he will not keep the hat on his head for more than 1 second

Popplebeetle · 28/05/2026 17:13

but I don't think I ever wore a hat in childhood

Same here, that goes for summer and winter.

Hatty65 · 28/05/2026 16:49

I wouldn't say anything, because I'm not an arsehole who thinks I'm a better parent than anyone else.

Nor do I think most adults welcome random twats suggesting they are neglecting their children. You'll be lucky if you get a simple 'Fuck Off' aimed at you.

There's nothing about being a parent.

As an adult, pretty sure everyone knows that babies and animals do not belong in the sun during a heatwave. It's unnecessary and unsafe.

YourPoliteTurtle · 28/05/2026 17:11

Babies? Yes it worries me.

Parents are usually wearing a hat and sunglasses, but the little ones have nothing.

There's no need to take younger children in the sun at the hottest time of the day for a start, but the beaches are full of young family. So no one can come up with an excuse on why they were there. It's a beach.

Thinking you can just put suncream on the baby and go in the sun is stupid and selfish.

I can't say anything but it's sad. There are the same parents who will later complain the children have to go to school on sunny days!

Every 20 minutes is excessive surely? I'm currently in 34 degrees heat in Europe and we're not reapplying that regularly. Not one of us has burned.

I appreciate the general public weren't great at sun safety awareness in the 90s but I don't think I ever wore a hat in childhood and don't remember a single time I went pink, as I would wear suncream when needed. I put hats on my own children but I'm not convinced it is absolutely necessary, particularly if you don't have very pale children.

AgnesMcDoo · 28/05/2026 17:06

Gawd no don’t say anything like

Sparrowsandbudgies · 28/05/2026 17:01

I wouldn’t say anything. Both of mine screamed like a banshee when I tried to get them to wear a hat. I just kept them out of the sun as much as I could and coated them in high spf. I’ve always hated wearing hats myself too.

Tied on where though, under the chin? We have tried hats with under the chin straps but they all seem to have the safety clips now that come apart when pulled.

I don’t think you should be putting cream on other children’s backs without asking the parent first

Ipsevenenabibas · 28/05/2026 16:58

It's 27 degrees where I am today. I saw a baby (less than 3 months old i would guess) with a sunburnt face and neck in the cafe. I then saw her with her mother standing in the sun. No hat. I didn't say anything.

Beeloux · 28/05/2026 16:57

I’d get off your high horse OP.

One of my ds point blank refused to wear a hat since he was a baby (winter I had to get him baliclava types). Ds2 has always happily worn a hat.

As long as they’re slathered in 50+ spf I don’t see the problem.

mondaytosunday · 28/05/2026 16:52

say what? ‘They should be wearing a hat’? People make a decision and that’s their right to make it. One of my kids liked wearing a hat my other would have a fit. By the time they were at school they were fine with it. I did put a high SPF lotion on them and avoided being out of possible in the hottest part of the day. At school no hat no play.

Goose8080 · 28/05/2026 16:49

I went to a zoo yesterday and saw several things i was surprised by inc teens (with their parents) who looked burned, toddlers drinking bottles of coke/dr pepper and people speaking roughly to their children. While i felt sad/mild distress at all three examples, it is not my business as a member of the public to lecture their parents and certainly wouldnt have been well recieved.

A playground mum i didn't know once kindly came over to explain to me that Nature Valley bars are not really healthy and are, in fact, full of sugar. These were things i already knew. I don't buy them regularly but had that day. I did not appreciate her advice.
Unless a child is in immediate danger it isn't your business and i cant think of anyone who would thank you for the public information service.

This. DS will keep a hat and sunglasses on, DD would take them off and throw them the moment I put them on here. There was simply no way of keeping them on, so we relied on sun cream and trying to keep her in the shade.
