AIBU to be upset my parents walked the dog in this heat?

My parents are looking after our dog this week whilst we are abroad. They’re not dog owners themselves so I had messaged them a few days ago reminding them to not walk above roughly 20’c with the dog as that’s the rule we go by in summer. I wouldn’t expect them to be able to walk at 7or 8am as they are in their early seventies so presumed they would use common sense and just skip any walks . Checked ring camera for a parcel today and seen they walked our dog at 10.30 in 26’c.
I've called them out on it and they’re acting like I’m being completely over the top and that the dog was fine. AIBU?
The dog is not a risk breed or elderly but I’m upset at the principle of ignoring what I’ve asked.

But enough of them do, of all ages otherwise they would tailor the advice accordingly?
Seriously why do you think they issue the advice?
All these annual comments about "my dog is fine" or "what do they do in hot countries"
Again, why do you think they issue advice? Dont you understand stats?

They issue advice because it’s quite literally their job to warn people of potential dangers. In the same way they post about certain foods being toxic, or certain plants, or warn of the risks of stick injuries etc.

It doesn’t mean that every single dog is at risk of heatstroke as soon as the thermometer reads a certain digit, which is what people seem to have interpreted it to mean.

And meanwhile breeders, handlers, agility people, Fast CAT people, dock diving people, barn hunt people, etc are outside with their dogs literally all summer long 😭 Obviously you use common sense, provide shade/water, avoid dangerously hot pavement, and monitor for overheating, but some of you talk like a healthy dog taking a normal walk in 79 degree weather is abuse. And btw, I can walk barefoot on pavement in 80 degrees with no problem unless it’s been sitting in direct blazing sun for hours, but at 10:30 a.m.? Please be serious.

Its been late 20s temperatures by that time in a few uk places last few days. And yes given the sunrise times, increasing temperatures over a few hours

But the advice is still based on a tiny fraction of dogs who struggle - it ignores the fact that the vast majority of dogs do not collapse and die or burn their paws every time the temperature goes above a certain digit.

Did you really ‘call them out on it’? Sounds so aggressive! Just remind them about dogs and the heat. I’m sure they feel doubly upset knowing that you are ‘spying’ on them as well.

Dinggirl · 27/05/2026 20:16

It's been 32 degrees during the day where I am, we've taken care to walk our very furry golden retriever at about 7 a.m. and then again at 8.30/9 p.m. when the temperature was cooler and the sun was setting. What did the daft animal do during the day? Sat outside sunbathing until I called him in! 🙈and according to the golden retriever facebook page I follow he wasn't alone!!

Skybluepinky · 27/05/2026 16:33

If you don’t like the way your parents are poking after your dog pay someone to look after it or take it with you.

This is why we always went on holidays our dog could come on too.

We take ours with us on UK holidays but put her in kennels when we go abroad. Our good neighbours asked us if they could look after her on those occasions - we gratefully declined because we need the certainty that a booking will be honoured!

Dog trainers also say NOT to walk your dog in the heat and, if you really have to, NOT on hot pavements

26 degrees and people are going on like they chucked the dog in a blast furnace. Given by all accounts the dog was fine that goes to show that the OP was being OTT in the first place and should stop acting like some sort of Oberdoggyfuhrer whose orders must be followed to the letter, whether they make sense or not.

blackpooolrock · 27/05/2026 14:29

your dog is fine. Dogs have been around for a long time and are out in all kinds of heat all over the world. Yes there will be notices from various charities and whatnot about not doing this and that but they are OTT too. Everyone is overly cautious about everything - its ridiculous, the world is too soft.

YABU to give other adults instructions, i'm sure they can manage without you controlling them. They probably think the same which is why they walked the dog and ignored you.

rosie1959 · 27/05/2026 13:15

I can understand why you are upset OP I have my daughter’s dog at the moment I would not dream of taking him out in those temperatures. We were up and out around 6 as it would be silly to take him out later. He is a big dog and the pavement can get far too hot.

WelshCakeLover · 27/05/2026 13:06

to be honest I was incredibly shocked to see so many dogs last week being walked while we were on holiday in Spain. it was about 30 degrees at the time but I suppose they are used to it. did feel for the poor things though. id be upset OP xx

I think 20 degrees is very low to not take them out above if on grass or in woods, but 26 degrees on hot pavements is too hot.

It's not. I walked barefoot on the pavement when it was 26C and the pavement was pleasantly warm.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 27/05/2026 13:02

You are believing the hysterical posts found on local social media groups.

TrixieFatell · 27/05/2026 13:02

You can always tell the UK weather by the amount of dog and hot weather posts on Facebook.

I used to take my small dog out in the low to mid 20s as he was fine in it, anything 27 and over we would stay in. It would depend on other factors though, today says 26 degrees but it's breezy today so feels cooler. We are lucky though, live near a huge wooded area with lots of water. He was a nightmare at home though on hot days as he would go and lie on the patio so we would have to keep moving him indoors.

Owning a pet now seems so much more work than having a child.

Don't be silly

So you would rather they get heatstroke!!! Great owner

They haven’t got heatstroke. They’re well and happy.

Only if you make it so.

26 degrees is winter in Australia!

Spottylittledog · 27/05/2026 12:50

Far out. You lot would not survive Australia

A lot of dogs do though. Her parents shouldn't have risked the dogs safety when he isn't their dog, wouldn't know how he'd react to the heat and when they were specifically asked not to. Your own dog is a different matter, I presume you're a responsible owner who wouldn't put their dog at risk and knows their limits.

And posters saying she's in the wrong because they're doing the OP a favour by looking after him are out of order imo, it isn't ok to put a living creature in danger just because you haven't charged for looking after him fgs

Do they? Because the stats would say that only a tiny percentage of dogs end up in the vets with heat related issues and even fewer die because of it.

I actually agree with you that her parents shouldn’t have gone against her wishes, I just don’t think it requires the mass hysteria seen on here. Just a “mum, please don’t walk him in that heat again, he struggles”. would be fine.

MyMilchick · 27/05/2026 12:36

tiramisugelato · 27/05/2026 12:28

But surely that applies the other way too? Just because your dog struggles, doesn’t mean they all do.

Genuine question - people have dogs in hot countries. What happens if you have a dog in Australia or Kenya or somewhere else that's hot for large parts of the year? Are you suggesting these dogs should never get walked?

it's still cooler in the morning and evening so you'd walk them then I presume
