British behaviour in holiday hotel

We are staying at a good all inclusive resort (yes, I know all inclusive is not high end, but this is about as good a one as you can get). I am just shocked and ashamed at fellow british people at breakfast time. Letting their kids make a huge mess by allowing them to get their own food. Huge amounts of wasted food. Multiple untouched plates left on tables. Total disregard for others barging round, blocking walkways etc. When did this become ok?? AIBU with expectations? Bear in mind this is not a cheap rubbish tui-blue type place. I dread to think what they are like!

Yeah I get it you're British, likely English - one of the most common traits is that you are oblivious to how you are received / perceived elsewhere. Good for you.

I have Danish family, I literally posted how going on holiday to Spain with them in a five star hotel we didn't stand out at all. The hotel was full of French and Spanish and they struggled the most with their children at dinner time with sorting at the table and screaming. Equally it wasn't really a hotel with any Brits so I know that difficult children are not unique to our nation. Are you Russian?

Scarlettjune · 26/05/2026 18:28

In my opinion the worst tourists are usually British or American. Both can be Loud, brash and annoying

It is you who is wrong. Have you ever been skiing, it is most certainly those listed above causing all the obnoxious behaviour. In fact, IME there aren't many Brits that ski compared to other European countries so I know that bad tourist behaviour is not just a Brit thing.

Surely we all know there are well-behaved people and badly-behaved people in all nationalities? Of course, some nationalities often excel at certain things (I think we are genuinely good at queueing, for example), but some people love to brag of how well-travelled they are only to criticise the Brits as boorish. Have those people not encountered some bad behaviour from the locals in the many countries they’ve visited?

OxRug · 26/05/2026 17:39

Go on. Tell us which hotel you’re in OP

Scarlettjune · 26/05/2026 17:33

Goldenbear · 26/05/2026 17:31

Or so she says

Of course she is. Ffs. Everyone complains about their own people

Twooclockrock · 26/05/2026 17:32

Thats really rude about tui blue holidays.
Manners and respect are for everyone, from the people letting their kids run about at dinner to you speaking badly about holiday choices of others. you don't have to be such an twat about other peoples holidays to make your point

Goldenbear · 26/05/2026 17:31

The OP is British herself?

Please don’t call TUI blue type places cheap and rubbish. They are still over £3k for a holiday and is the best that people can afford - don’t shit on others!

I was going to say this. For us it was closer to 5k when I looked so definitely not cheap and from what friends said they had a lovely time!!

bit rude OP

notnorman · 26/05/2026 17:24

On a recent cruise- was shocked at how South Americans and the Chinese were re smoking/pushing in/lack of queueing/taking piles of the, for eg nice tropical fruit and leaving none for anyone else.

It’s almost like someone (yet again) has taken a ridiculous British stereotype to try and undermine and criticise British people,

Ive been on numerous all inclusive holidays with my children and ive never saw behaviour that your saying. Maybe your not staying in good 5* hotels.

I've seen it on all inclusive.

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 26/05/2026 11:05

Ditto with living next door to other people then complaining that aren't SILENTLY using their own garden.

There's an acceptable level of noise by law.

I was driven mad by my neighbour who converted his shed and sang karaoke in the shed every night

Sidebeforeself · 26/05/2026 16:33

Isn’t the behaviour the issue not the nationality? Nobody can say it’s mainly British people that act this way unless you’ve been to all the hotels in the world and witnessed everyone on holiday!! It’s just a perception based on your experience.. can’t possibly be true of an entire nation.

MrsBeltane · 26/05/2026 16:30

I've just returned from a week in a mid range all inclusive. Lots of British people, no problems at all. Everyone was very well behaved. The airport was the problem, so many entitled, loud people, mainly British.

TimetoPour · 26/05/2026 16:28

Yes, your Tui comment makes you sound like an unreasonable snob however I do agree with the sentiment of this thread.

When ours were small, DH and I used to take one child each and walk around with them. They picked and we put it on their plates.not only are they likely to spill things but it’s dangerous allowing small children to wander round while staff are refilling the hot trays etc.

I don’t think it’s just children or British though. I’ve seen many heaped, untouched plates, food all over the floor, bad table manners etc at these places over the years. More than half the time it is entitled adults.

Oh blimey, yes they really do take the biscuit in sheer piggery and horrible rudeness to staff too. Experienced this in Egypt and Dubai 14 years ago - never been back to either

This. The worst manners I’ve ever seen were in Russians in a 5* hotel.

lxn889121 · 26/05/2026 16:25

I let my son (5 now, but started at 4) go up to get things on his own at breakfast...

He loves it, good little bit of independence. He'll go grab a bit of toast, or a few pieces of fruit and come back all excited because he has done something "grown-up"

Poor parenting(or other issues) leads to children causing trouble, not giving them bits of independence.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/05/2026 16:25

BrownBookshelf · 26/05/2026 15:53

It is genuinely quite funny that anyone thinks British tourists are unlike any others in having a bad reputation when Russian tourists exist.

Last time I went to Menorca I had a similar experience. The parents were as bad as the children, eating off their plates whilst walking around the buffet loading their plates up. Children running riot. Throwing rubbish all over the floor. The British were kept in a separate block from other nationalities where there was a different restaurant. There’s loads of complaints on Tripadvisor about it but I can totally understand why other nationalities would not want to dine with us.

Link to the Tripadvisor reviews or it didn't happen.

Yes, I have strong opinions about people being respectful and kind.

I really don't see the issue with that.

If those values aren't important to you then that's your choice.

Yes, your opinions are so strong that you continue to deliberately miss the point and twist the conversation into something that nobody is saying.

@Scarfitwere YANBU!! I'd be mortified to be English!

This is why I stay in a half board hotel that will be mostly foreign people there and just a handful of "well trained" English! The uncouth don't tend to bother with places where they don't speak English and serve "foreign stuff" to eat! My kids are well trained and polite!

I'm a teacher in a state secondary school and I really think we need to go back to basics with parenting, and give parents a guide book on how to raise a child!! We took a Y7 residential trip with 100 kids, and the amount of kids who can't use a knife and fork, don't sit at a table to eat, take more food than they intend to eat etc... is shocking. We also banned phones, and the kids didn't know how to socialise. By the end of the week, they were finally having a laugh about the stuff they'd done all week rather than talking about what someone else had done on TikTok.

Great xenophobia there. I’ve witnessed equally atrocious behaviour from plenty of other nations as well as other areas of the UK. As a teacher you really should know better.

We were the first school in out Northern city to have a formal Leavers' Dinner, now morphed into a Prom, and it was amazing how many 16 year olds had never sat at a table to eat and couldn't manage a knife and fork, resorting to just a fork. They were also not allowed alcohol, even before the event, a member of the Senior staff was the human breathalyser before they got on the bus! On Monday morning one n'er do well told me he didn't realise you could have such a good time without a beer.
