AIBU to resent the mess and antisocial behaviour from bank holiday visitors?

I know I am going to get flamed for this thread, but I have had enough.

I live in a beautiful area, with a lot of tourism, and as such on good weather bank holiday weekends it becomes packed with people from outside of town. No problem with that, I knew when we were buying it was a popular place, and it's good for local business's.

But with it comes rubbish, mess and anti social behavior;

Does anybody else have to put up with this?

The locals don't act like it, people come to visit who couldn't afford to live here and the behavior stinks.

Let the show begin....

It's a real shame the OP has started a really useful thread about litter and antisocial behaviour and then immediately sidelined it by making it goady about class/income.

I agree. Selfish people come in all socio-economic groups.

We see this daily not just on bank holidays. We live near the NC500 and the behaviour of some is outrageous. So far this year we’ve seen numerous people empty their camper van toilets in the loch, have had motorhomes try and “wild camp” at the gates to our drive (including setting up tables/chairs/BBQ), “wild camp” in passing places leaving their rubbish behind, have bonfires on the banks of the loch leaving disposable BBQ’s behind as well as their drink bottles… the list is endless. Don’t get me started on parking in carparks and panicking when the barriers are closed at night. Yes some support local businesses but more often than not they’ll stock up from one of the big supermarkets and leave their shit behind them, we found two discarded tents last week along with their rubbish from the weekend. Mountain rescue have been busy with idiots climbing in trainers or sandals the last few days and being totally unprepared for the conditions at the tops of the summits. Another issue we’ve had is people with those fucking bully dogs on the loch shore, it’s as if the rules don’t apply here and they let these things run free without muzzles, four times this week already we’ve asked them to move on or muzzle them. Twice these requests were met with astonishment because “but there’s no no-one around”, well I’m around, so either muzzle them or I’m calling the police. Wankers.

Edited to add don’t get me started on those tent box things folk have on the roof of their cars and think they can park up anywhere to “wild camp”. Half of them haven’t even heard of The Scottish Outdoor Access Code when you mention it to them.

i don't agree with you about the class of people though - that's just snobbery!

It's not snobbery, it's actual stupidity.

The OP is basically saying that money makes people decent.

So if a murderer or rapist got out of prison, bought a lottery ticket and won £10 million, that'd automatically make them a better person.

Actually I've just realised this is the OP who likes to talk a lot about her husband's money 🙄

Yes, indeed she does. Her outlook about poorer people is evident the more she posts on whatever tedious threads she starts.

They have a tendency to do that, whenever they start a thread. Seeing as the OP is so rich, maybe they might want to buy a private island, and have expensive cheesecake shipped over 🙄.

I agree with you OP - not about the poor people bit, that's ridiculous! I grew up poor as a church mouse and lived in council housing (the horror) but wouldn't have dreamed of leaving litter behind.
We've had the same where I live this weekend. Went for a run this morning by the river and ended up picking up so many cans, disposable BBQs and junk food wrappers 😡What gets me is, they come here because it's beautiful and then leave the place a complete shit tip! If we didn't clear up after them it wouldn't be long before they could no longer find a place to sit or swim because of all the rubbish. Grim.

BCBird · 26/05/2026 10:50

I have never understood why someone would leave a bag of rubbish next to a bin, surely it makes sense to take it home? I am from a working class background and I never would, nor have ever left litter behind. It is alien to me. If everyone simply cleaned up after themselves the problem would be solved. I noticed in Covid the massive absence of litter. I now live in a pretty village. There are numerous bins- they are rarely emptied

Frenzi · 26/05/2026 10:49

I feel your pain. I also live in a very touristy area which gets very, very busy from April to November, more so on hot sunny days.

We are inundated with motorbikes which rev their engines and drive like lunatics up and down the main road (we are located in a valley so the noise can be deafening). So many people dont want to pay for parking so just abandon their cars anywhere and we rarely have traffic wardens to police it. Bikes park on pavements. The litter is horrific and the smell of cannabis awful.

It is a village of approx 650 people. We have lived here for 30 years and although we were fully aware that it was a tourist magnet the anti-social behaviour has got worse and worse each year.

I am a parish councillor and we have constant discussions about it but the district council, police and traffic wardens all have an excuse. We (the parish council) have now been told that the local council have approved the village to be a check point for up to 200 just road legal racing cars in the next couple of weeks. It will be horrific.

I think one thing we could do is build more open air pools.
People have a very primal need to be near water when it is really hot. And its unfair to judge them for seeking it out.

If there were more open air pools they might not feel the need to drive hours in gridlock to a packed beach and then park haphazardly. When I see the crazy long queues heading to the beach I sort of sympathise with them for wanting to find a parking space when they get there!!

I live in a town 10 miles from a big city. The beaches here aren't swimmable but we have a fantastic natural sea pool. It's free, you can swim any time of day all year and is entirely run by local volunteers. I swim there every day of the year and am on the volunteer team.

Yesterday we very busy with people, many of whom had made the short journey from town in cars or on the great local transport link.

Oh my God the sad state of the place as 6am this morning.
We have taken over 60 bin bags of rubbish from in the pool and the edge of the pool. Mostly rubbish but also clothes, toys, burst inflatables, tupperware, babies bottles, full nappies, sbroken bottles - over 1,000 plastic bottles, most with some drink still in them.

Within walking distance of the pool there are over 30 bins. All were full and the grass areas around the pool strewn with litter.

It breaks my heart that people will come to a beautiful place and shit all over it.
Who do they think clears it up?
It says everywhere it's volunteer run so they know us muppets will clean up their mess and they don't care.

The worst thing for me is despite everything we all know the people who leave this mess don't care if all their shit gets in the ocean.

Humans are a design fault.

Still full of dog shit on the pavement and little bags hanging from bushes.

It was hardly useful anyway to be fair.

'Tourist spot suffers from litter louts and antisocial behaviour during hot weather'.

Hardly groundbreaking.

Piedpiper99 · 26/05/2026 10:45

The availability of rubbish bins makes absolutely no difference in my opinion.
In my town, I see rubbish strewn all over our local park despite bins being dotted around everywhere. I see the same in lots of places.
People are either respectful enough to use the bins / take their rubbish with them if there aren't any... or they're not.

I also don't think it has anything to do with money - you either respect the countryside / are considerate, or you aren't. I grew up on a council estate in a very poor area. We used to do a lot of walking and things in nature with my parents and we ALWAYS took a rubbish bag, and were taught to take our rubbish away with us.
My DH also grew up poor - never went on holiday, parents struggled. He now goes litter picking with our children out of choice.
We earn well now, but that's not what created our respect and consideration. Otherwise we'd surely be litter louts. We didn't suddenly have money and become considerate!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 26/05/2026 10:44

I recently moved to a tourist area, & one thing that stands out is the lack of rubbish bins in the Old Town & along the Prom.
I'm not condoning it at all, but people abandon their rubbish because there's nowhere else to put it.
Extra bins would be more cost-effective than clearing up .

We have spent the weekend asking people to please not park on our (very obvious even has private no parking signs) drive 😡
The level of entitlement is off the scale " we will only be a minute" Just popping to the shop" Parking right in front of our gate so we couldn't even exit our house (managed to prevent husband forceably opening gate so it dented their car)

Asked one person for their address, when they asked why I said that if we were in their area we would come park at theirs and then go off to enjoy a coffee and some light shopping as a quid pro quo.

Went off to do the horses and found some utter melt having a picnic in the farm gateway so nobody could get in or out sadly the muck spreader was empty!

Just arrrrrrrrrgh

And don't start me off at the lack of driving skills on single carriageway country roads - of course I will take my car into the hedge/ditch/drystone wall because you have no idea how wide your car is.

Hellohelga · 26/05/2026 10:40

Where I live locals pick up the litter so 24h after the bank holiday it’s back to normal. But yes some visitors make a massive mess. Some people try and argue they should have right to roam over farmland and they can be trusted not to leave a mess. If I were a farmer I’d say no chance.
