AIBU to stop therapy after learning my therapist’s husband is Reform?

I live in a small town. I started having therapy maybe a year ago. I feel it’s been working for me and I like my therapist. However I realised today that she is (very very recently) married to a man who recently stood and won as a reform councillor in our local election. I detest reform. I’m married to an immigrant (EU citizen) and am delighted that my kids are dual nationals and have the option of travelling, working and living in the EU should they desire. I’m also very pro the transition to green energy. I have solar and drive an EV. Finally I cannot stand Farage and the political grift embodied by people like him and Jenrick and am dismayed by the harms caused by Brexit.

My therapist is also an EU national and is here under indefinite leave to remain - as is my wife.
Read a few interviews with her husband today and he spouts the usual anti EU, anti immigration, anti green transition rhetoric you’d expect from Reform. I don’t feel comfortable continuing therapy with someone who’s married to a reform politician, and am very surprised that she is comfortable with his views and by extension those of Farage.

Am I overreacting?

Party wise, they hate brown people. They wheel out a few misguided token people.

They don't hate brown people. Restore arguably do.

Nigel Farage has actually praised British Hindus for their hard work and educational drive.

Poor little Reform supporters. All they want to do is vote through a referendum that decimates our economy and stifles our children's futures; shout their tits off about immigration policy that is both potentially devastating to thousands and economically self-defeating anyway; render the climate of the very Earth we live on uninhabitable; jump to conclusions about every damn crime that gets reported about how it must have been those horrible muslim asylum seekers (and then go strangely silent when they're wrong); go to marches to hear the likes of Tommy Ten Names spout vile, bigoted crap about their bogeyman du jour; vote for a party that openly plans to remove free access to healthcare, destroy the government's tax base and therefore all possibility of decent public services with it, and turbo-charge our already spiralling economic inequality...

And people won't even be nice to them and be their fwiends!

The far right insanity taking over the world at the moment is a revolting disease, and the people who openly and proudly attempt to impose it upon our futures can go wallow in their festering hole of self pity and do whatever they have to do. It's not our responsibility to make them feel better about their racism or their gullibility. Our responsibility as citizens and as parents is to fight back and salvage whatever sliver of hope for humanity we can.

I'm not going to tell you you should find another therapist, but that's what I'd be doing. And I'd tell her exactly why.

What a condescending pile of garbage.

Yes this is the bit that is really racist. Attributing a negative characteristic to everyone coming from a particular part of the world because of the behaviour of a small minority.

Oh, okay. So trends and statistics among cultural groups aren’t a thing. Culture has nothing to do with attitudes and behaviours, Per capita crime statistics are meaningless. Not to mention what we can all see with our own eyes but are conditioned by imposed ideology to pretend we don’t see.

I was actually making a joke about the woeful understanding of fascism by multiple posters. I didn’t even notice your typo and I knew what you meant, which is why my reply to you focused on your failure to understand the term, not your spelling of it.

That’s not the way it reads.

Applewisp · 26/05/2026 14:12

Maybe in therapy you could explore why you are so hostile and judgmental toward people with different opinions and views? This is called prejudice. Why are you so prejudiced? Do you believe thought should be dictated and controlled? Are you a fascist? Because you are sure sounding like one.

Can’t we have disability bants? Or is it just racial bants?

This poster has already said she has dyslexia - two of the letters were transposed. Could you really not work out what they actually meant ?

ByGraptharsHammer · 26/05/2026 14:09

Can’t we just ignore these pesky equality laws based on the ECHR about disability? I thought Reform were keen on that

Many of these asylum seekers have unfortunately commit heinous crimes

Is it many or is it actually a small percentage? Do you have the stats?

We also have MN moderators who will delete posters who criticise other posters in this way. You don’t know who you’re responding to - what their level of grammar/punctuation/spelling is, or whether they have a disability affecting their ability. It’s rude and it can be ableist.

Thank you!

. Sovereignty - people didn't want to be governed by unelected bureaucrats. You can't vote out the European commission. We have a free trade deal with the EU

. We need to limit immigration.

. Energy costs here are very high, they hurt industry and consumers. We are 1% of emissions.

. Many of these asylum seekers have unfortunately commit heinous crimes.

But we have spell check?

I know. And generally my typing spelling is pretty good these days as a result of auto correct. But the way I spelled it it wouldn’t even autocorrect! Kept trying to correct to facial or something like that.

but feel free to keep taking the piss! Trust me I’m used to it. School in the 90s gave me a pretty thick skin.

Do people here refuse to be civil to Tory councillors.

No, because they are along established political party. Not a bunch ot racists.

Do you remember Nige and his hate pre Brexit?

bafta16 · 26/05/2026 14:01

Gofnfnf · 26/05/2026 10:20

Again party wise what's racist about their policies?

All parties have had unscrupulous people at the local level.

You misunderstood my post. It wasn’t the Poles voting it was my neighbours voting to get them out. There’ll be plenty of people that aren’t white ‘racists’ voting for Reform I assure you.

Sorry, totally misunderstood you. Looking at it through my own prism - the Poles I know are very anti-immigration to the UK - that is why I said 'newcomers, etc.'.

MadderthanMorris · 26/05/2026 13:48

this is what I feel is wrong is instead of having any kind of discussion they tell people to get in the bin. This is why reform are so popular because if you squash the discourse and discussion of just moves people to a movement where they feel they can express an opinion without getting cancelled. From what I’ve found it’s the people who say ‘hope not hate’ who are the most hateful and mean ones to deal with

There's been plenty of discussion about all the main issues Reform have policies for (including the big one). There was plenty of discussion available to consider and take part in about Brexit and its likely effects, there is plenty now about the economic realities of immigration, ageing population etc. Most of the time Reform supporters are not up to it. They spew out a couple of sentences from the childishly oversimplified "economics" they've been fed, in which immigration causes absolutely every societal ill and brings no benefits to make up for it, and then the moment they're challenged - however intelligently, politely and objectively - they spit the dummy and wail about how nobody listens to them.

The latest one is the fact that net immigration is actually plummeting, to half what it was a year ago and a fraction of its height during the Boriswave. You'd think this would be an opportunity for Reform supporters to say "oh, we ARE being listened to, the government IS taking our concerns into account", right? Wrong, instead we have every damn contortion possible to try and insist that that's not really what's happening, and anyway was never really what it was about (it was about small boats ONLY, or deporting people with moustaches, or something, apparently).

So they GET what they want in the Brexit referendum...

They GET what they want in immigration policy...

At the expense of everybody else who wants to actually approach these subjects rationally and not commit societal suicide over them. But oh no, the problem is still that the poor little Reformers are shouting to have their voices heard and nobody's listening.

And I really object to the one-sidedness of this supposed victimhood. Have you seen how some of these people talk about the "liberal elite", the "woke brigade" etc? In the runup to Brexit I engaged with posters on here who opened described how they wanted to see middle class people suffer. But that's OK, because they're the victims after all. Don't dare tell a racist when they're being racist though...

I actually find reform voters absolutely fine to have a debate with. They have their opinions and will express them and listen and maybe you can find common ground to bring them out of their opinions.

but the left I find very hard to have any kind of debate without it being immediately shut down.

anyway - I’m out, too much of a nest of vipers for me ✌️

I thought insulting people drives them to vote Reform. Is that what you're trying to do? Insult us in the hope we will be forced against our will to vote Reform?

But what if the therapist's spouse is a woke, snowflake lefty? Could be a dilemma.

Exactly. They will need to check the credentials carefully to ensure their mindset is respected

Feis123 · 25/05/2026 19:45

Oh, the irony of the Poles voting this way. But, as they say 'it is always the newcomers/last ones in who pull up the ladder'. Btw, border control is vital, not racist. And multiculturalism is only a strength when you have an Empire - like Britain used to be or like the USSR was.

You misunderstood my post. It wasn’t the Poles voting it was my neighbours voting to get them out. There’ll be plenty of people that aren’t white ‘racists’ voting for Reform I assure you.
