AIBU to stop therapy after learning my therapist’s husband is Reform?

CanyonRider · 25/05/2026 18:20

I live in a small town. I started having therapy maybe a year ago. I feel it’s been working for me and I like my therapist. However I realised today that she is (very very recently) married to a man who recently stood and won as a reform councillor in our local election. I detest reform. I’m married to an immigrant (EU citizen) and am delighted that my kids are dual nationals and have the option of travelling, working and living in the EU should they desire. I’m also very pro the transition to green energy. I have solar and drive an EV. Finally I cannot stand Farage and the political grift embodied by people like him and Jenrick and am dismayed by the harms caused by Brexit.

My therapist is also an EU national and is here under indefinite leave to remain - as is my wife.
Read a few interviews with her husband today and he spouts the usual anti EU, anti immigration, anti green transition rhetoric you’d expect from Reform. I don’t feel comfortable continuing therapy with someone who’s married to a reform politician, and am very surprised that she is comfortable with his views and by extension those of Farage.

Am I overreacting?

I'm not sure why you keep on wanting to lure me into something. It's perfectly clear that a number of posters think they are superior. Refusing to associate oneself with one who supports a different political party is fascist. I meant to get back to you on your earlier question you posed to me on fascism. To lump a whole conglomerate of voters and conclude they are racist is devoid of any semblance of critical thinking. This means so much to the OP that she's hardly returned to her own thread. I do hope she finds a more suitable therapist.

If you think asking you to justify what you say is trying to lure you into something, feel free to interpret it that way.

Lihou is not from an ethnic minority although I think he is half-German.

I doubted one of the alleged victims because I wasn't convinced he had reliably identified Farage as his abuser - certainly his description would not stand up in court (I am not doubting that he was abused by persons unknown). The alleged victim only attended the school for one year in the junior school, he didn't know Farage's name at the time but said he recognised Farage in adulthood 'from his walk', he doesn't have any witnesses to corroborate his story, he originally claimed that Farage was aged 18 and that he was aged 9 - however both men are listed on Companies House which shows the month and year they were born - Farage was aged 15, mostly 16 when the alleged victim was aged 9 (the victim later changed his account of their ages - several times in fact), he described Farage as 'very tall' and standing with two others ... I think there is some doubt as to whether the victim has identified the right person.

I have no reason to doubt Peter Ettedgui's account - "Hitler was right" - he said Farage was aged 13 or 14 at the time.

The person who referenced Lihou was you. He is not a victim, and no-one claimed he is.

You stated that you had doubts if some ethnic minority people made allegations, but some defended him. I find it quite shocking that you cannot see how dangerous that is. I can only imagine you’ve never been victimised by an outwardly charming and successful person. This is precisely why serial offenders are able to get away with it for so long.

We simply do not know for certain whether NF said these things, we have a bunch of evidence and will choose who to believe based on our own impressions. None of your doubts seem particularly striking to me - despite your obvious investment in investigating the victims. However it does seem telling that, when some of the allegations were first put to him in 2013, NF said he had said things but that they may or may not be racist. Now, with more to lose and in a harsher social climate, he denies ever saying such things. Why would he change on that if he didn’t have anything to hide?

We’re miles off topic now and I’m reminded of that saying about wrestling with pigs. Have a lovely evening.

The government can't publish data that isn't collected. But I guess you think that is a conspiracy too.

You think they don’t have data on nationality, immigration status, age, sex etc?

Come on now.

But you’ve shown us who you are

I'm a Brexit voting Conservative - I have no reason to change my vote on either count.

Then why are you citing him? Why do you find it so easy to disbelieve people of ethnic minority who say they were bullied, and yet so hard to imagine why NF would himself lie?

The answer is obvious of course, but maybe you have some reason.

But don’t take my word for it (as if you would).

Type into google ‘Does the uk government release data on asylum seeker crime rates?’

Person knows a man in real life, has awful memories of him from over several years.

Does he have awful memories of Farage? Lihou was a former friend, not one of the alleged victims.

Lihou is also a Facebook member of:

European Movement UK, Rejoin EU, The British Pro-European Political Blog, The Very Brexit Problems Club, Fife4Europe, Cambridge for Europe [Top Fan], Leeds for Europe...

memories of him from over several years.

Person watches that man become successful of the back of things they consider to be false (many of which are proven to be lies).

Person uses their own social media to reject accusations that they are lying about man, because some people who feel politically aligned think they know him.

That seems personally motivated to me, rather than political. But you’ve shown us who you are so no point engaging with you any further.

I found the lengthy rant on Reunite EU - British European Rejoiners Facebook Group 17th December 2025 - thread title Nigel Farage has been told to apologise... - comments by Jean-Pierre Lihou (I have edited - there is more).

The others I think I found on Twitter - Nicholas Cannon to Byline Times is one, if I remember correctly.

Why would they bother?

Some of the witnesses clearly lied when they claimed that they were not politically motivated in coming forward (they signed an open letter published by the Guardian in which they claimed; 'The accusation that we are politically motivated is false').

Lengthy rant from one of the signatories/witnesses on Facebook;

'I am a named person, have been since 3 weeks and was on itv yesterday three times on all news broadcasts. Jeepers. Nothing like discussing with an oaf who can’t even read up, but spouts utter drivel, continuous. Like I said, pipe down. You’re just proving to all and sundry what a dimwit Reform voter sucks up as fact and spews forth. Thanks for that, I guess'

'Sorry. If you're going to come on here and talk twaddle - then face facts, or become a coward like you like to bandy about concerning everyone else. Thing is, I know NF. We went to school together. In the same class. I know the people he bullied. Read up, won't you. So telling me to have a proper debate and simultaneously spouting your fragile grasp of uncorroborated statistics really is risible playground material. What you have clearly not a dickiebird clue about is that your hero - who caused the sea of economic and social problems - is the problem the country has. No good you twaddling on about labour this, tory that, IMF, price and incomes policies, ted heaths power cuts, the oil crisis, des healeys nationalisation, Maggies poll tax, etc etc - your idiot hero caused the mess that we are living in NOW. And he wants to fix it?? Please, just pipe down and keep quiet. That way you don't have to expose to people that you really are daft as...'

'Thankfully, the coward that is NF hasn't made it to PM since then you'd need to be privately insured and will cough up handsomely...'
'and then there's all the money he's taking from abroad... which when trickie Dickie Tice went on about how unfair it was that George Soros donated to his opponents, twaddled on about how unfair it was.'

'Jesus… you really are thick as a pile of 4x2. Do you read anything? Can you even? Do you have the capacity? Everything you’ve stated, or dreamt, I’ve proven false. What a pathetic example you are. Drink some Horlicks and go to bed. When you’re sober, re-read. Leave the meths alone...'
'hahahaha. Keep on repeating. Facts in tatters. Reason - gone. Love to see roasted gaslighting gammon Maybe have a glass of wine, might give you some solace. Enjoy your band of proven traitors.'

Another witness/signatory to the letter;

'Fucking finally. I hope the Tories and Reform traitors are shitting themselves. We still need a proper http://Leave.EU investigation. The Tories “did not want to know” if Russia interfered in Brexit. Probably because they all profited from it.'

Another;

(1/10) Reform UK now have multiple viable paths to power in Britain. And it couldn’t be clearer: the establishment press is extremely unlikely to scrutinise it properly. Help us hold Reform to account in 2026 with a massive new wave of investigations...

It’s not about being better or worse though, therapy is a vulnerable situation in which you need to feel comfortable. If OP doesn’t in light of this new information, that’s it really.

I’ve been in counselling before through a Christian org not being religious myself so I was paired with the relevant counsellor. If I had been paired with a Christian counsellor it would quite frankly have been disastrous for a number of reasons. OP’s situation isn’t that much different, her therapists views can’t be that far from the man she’s married to and who had a very public profile.

My husband and I have completely different political views and enjoy our stimulating discussions.

I think it probably does matter if 5/6 Jewish and ethnic minority former pupils have complained about him and 3/4 have defended him.

Does it? The man who raped me and broke two of my ribs had a sister, a mother, several previous and one current girlfriend give character evidence that he was a great guy. Does that mean I’m lying? Or is it possible that people are different to different people?

I never said I wanted Labour to win. Either the Makerfield election or the next GE.

My reason for puncturing Burnham is his misogynistic, sexist comments that devalued women as a sex class because he was trying to "be kind" (get votes). Any politician doing that is the subject of my ire.

I have said here a thousand times, I am a single issue voter, it's this issue, transgender ideologies intersection with women's rights, nothing more, nothing less.

I just had to google Kenyon's first name, I had no clue, and unless I missed it above, nobody linked to anything either.

Of course you didn't say you wanted Labour to win.
You stated the opposite, that you hoped that people would be put off a Burnham vote by your posting of the clip where he (stupidly) said he thought it was a small minority of women who didn't want TIMs in their spaces.
Alongside this he also said that the 'minority' as he saw it, needed to be accommodated and used the term 'biological males', all four years ago. He has since said his position has changed and committed to the SCJ. Which hardly identifies him as the world's greatest trans ally, does it?
Now you've googled Kenyon, if you lived in Makerfield, would you still rather have him as your daughters representative than Burnham in this two horse race?
