To not understand my weight?

MagdelenaMorrison · 24/05/2026 08:41

I seriously don't get it.
I'm trying soooooo hard to lose weight.
It's bloody hard, hard work trying to shift it.
The eating less is easy, I find calorie restriction easy. I'm naturally a healthy eater and my diet consists of vegetables, salad, brown rice, potatoes, poultry, fish, a little red meat, lots of mixed beans and lentils. No cheese, cream, milk, ice cream, as I'm dairy free. I don't eat any UPF or takeaways or convenience food; everything I eat is home cooked from scratch. Nothing is fried. I've got Coeliac disease which means I can't eat gluten so that cuts out bread, rolls, pastries, cakes, biscuits, etc. as I medically can't eat those foods. No crisps, chocolate or fizzy drinks, don't like that stuff. I don't drink alcohol, I'm teetotal.
Anyway despite eating healthily I am overweight and I am now tracking my calorie intake on a diet tracker.
What's hard is not the calorie restriction, I'm doing that easily. It's how hard it is to get any weight off. AND how much my weight is bouncing around.
So here's my gripe about my weight:
6 weeks ago: 12.6
5 weeks ago: 12.8
4 weeks ago: 13.2
3 weeks ago: 12.7
2 weeks ago: 12.8
1 week ago: 12.6
Today: 12.9
WTF?
Throughout these weeks I have eaten EXACTLY the same amount of calories each day, 1,100. All weighed, measured and recorded in to my weight loss app. Not one day have I exceeded this amount of calories. Literally not once.
5ft 7.
45 years old.
And bloody fed up.
BTW I've had a load of blood tests done (not for weight loss but for other reasons), tested my thyroid, diabetes, LH FSH hormones, kidneys, liver, cholesterol, lots of other stuff I can't remember, and every test was in the normal range.
Why is my weight bouncing around all over the place????

Actually I posted once only about the theme of the thread and I don't care to explain myself because I don't give a crap. It's not me that has a weight problem and why would I want to elaborate to people who are so rude and try to shut me down. I literally don't care what you or op believes and I couldn't care less if you believe me or not. You clearly don't agree and that is your absolute right. The only reason I am posting is because I object to being told to shut up. Interesting though that a few people on this thread are telling op to eat more calories too 🤔

Ok so you’ve no idea how the body mysteriously fuels itself in a defecit to retain or gain weight. You kinda had to think that through before you started posting your belief system.

And it’s not about believing you. You’re positing stuff that defies human biology. It’d not some faith based thing. Biology is biology. If you eat in a defecit the body burns fat or muscle to make up that defecit. Which makes the body lighter. That’s a fact. There is no other way to fuel it. Irrelevant of your personal belief system that it mysteriously fuels the defecit another way.

christ don’t they teach this stuff in school. It’s biology 1.01.

Well done you for both having access to the truth and being able to see into the future 👏👏👏 You must be the only person on the planet or perhaps you are God? And op is perfectly capable of taking on board or discounting any opinions expressed on this thread she doesn't need your protection. She already has a weight problem so she can try something new or keep doing what she's doing that isn't working - entirely up to her.

Yes, the new thing she can try is a calorie deficit! Which everyone knows is how weight loss occurs! Eating even more will only make her more overweight. Obviously.

And actually, lots of people do need protection from misinformation because they believe it to their own detriment either by being desperate enough to try it or being informed enough that they think it's true.

It's almost like misinformation spreads and becomes ingrained as truth which then causes problems. Like all the bullshit claims about vaccines causing autism. It's been thoroughly proven as a lie yet 30 years on people still believe it and kids are dying because of the misinformation spreads about by people who don't know what they're talking about.

That's why shutting misinformation down matters so much, because it harms people.

Then if you don’t beleive your body is fueling the defecit with fat or muscle exactly what do you think is fueling it?

the biology is undisputed other than by you. Eat in a defecit your body burns fat or muscle to make up the difference, when you burn fat or muscle it no longer exists. As such your body weighs less.

so you’re repeatedly posting about eating in a defecit and maintaning weight, according to your personal belief system. So explain how it’s fueling itself. As the only other thing we can see going in is air.

HeavyHeidi · 25/05/2026 19:05

OP said she doesn't lift weights so it won't be muscle.

MummyWillow1 · 25/05/2026 19:01

Do you exercise? Just mentioning it because if you are doing loads of strength training you can be loosing fat but not weight as you are building muscle.

How do your clothes feel? Perhaps stop going off your weight and use measurements to track instead.

AnotherBretonTop · 25/05/2026 18:55

It absolutely is the PCOS.
Over the years I have done countless diets / plans etc and had bizarre results just like you.
I have now lost 3 stone on low dose Mounjaro, keeping up with some exercise.
It is the only thing that has consistently worked for me.

mondaytosunday · 25/05/2026 18:45

I’d say you aren’t eating enough. My sweet spot is 1600 calories - if I reduce to 1400 it makes no difference. On 1600 I lose about 2lbs a week 10lbs/month.
Have you worked out your TDEE? Find out and take no more than 500 off that. And double check your figures in terms of weighing/calories.

First of all, someone did tell me to stop sharing my opinion and that is exactly what I took issue with. Second of all, where the fuck did I say the body can survive on air? Third of all, you have a tenuous grasp on what a fact is. I presented a theory not a fact.

No, they are not opinions. They are facts. Please explain how you think anorexics overcome starvation to get skeletally thin?

Sharing misinformation isn't just sharing a harmless opinion, ita sharing information that is not.true and will also harm people. If OP listens to the posters bleating on about starvation mode and eats more she will gain weight and be more upset than she already is.

I don't believe in trying to shut down other people's perspectives and opinions so mind your own business.

If a ‘perspective or opinion’ is inaccurate medical information that impacts someone posting then you are going to get corrected. Your beliefs are irrelevant.

Travelban · 25/05/2026 18:20

I had an operation in December and for the first time I managed to lose 4 kgs - I was unable to move for 2 months but I was really not hungry at all - didn't drink, barely ate and lost the weight. All the other times I have struggled to lose weight so I think calorie deficiency does work BUT:
I am active now and weight lifting and exercising and I feel like I need to fuel that bit more. I have a healthy appetite and even if I don't eat that much and exercise my weight is not shifting. So I think there is an element that when active and exercising, your body will demand nourishment too. And muscle weighs probably more than fat? Or so I am led to believe....
Either way something has shifted significantly for me as I used to be able to lose weight very very easily - not so much now!!

As previous posters have said, if starvation mode was real anorexics wouldn't be able to get so thin and people in famines wouldn't starve to death. It's just impossible to live on less calories than your body needs to survive and maintain your body weight.

How can you disagree with a fact. Biology is biology. It’s fine you beleive the body can fuel itself with air. As oppposed to burning fat or muscle to fuel the defecit thus making your body lighter, And no one asked you to stop sharing that opinion, of course pointing out you’re factually incorrect is what many will do.

but if you wish to beleive the human body can fuel itself on air. Crack on.

Sorry but I don't agree. I don't agree with your analysis and I don't agree that I should stop sharing my opinion. I have been alive long enough to know that where food and diet is concerned 'scientific evidence' changes all the time depending on who is funding the research and the latest fad of the day. I know there is an idea that science is somehow a pure and direct access to the 'truth' but that is simply not the case. Research is always funded by someone and it asks specific questions in specific ways. The food industry is as corrupt as the pharmaceutical industry. Sadly we have to make our own choices around food and diet because there is no one size fits all and because there is a lot of bad science.

There is a difference between sharing down an opinion and spreading misinformation.

Starvation mode has been scientifically proven to not be real. If OP eats more she will gain weight. Misinformation is harmful.

Starvation mode isn't real. And how do you think she's going to gain muscle in that kind of calorie deficit?

I wasn’t suggesting she should exercise on those calories. If anything I was pointing out she needs to eat more.
But starvation mode does exist. An efficient body will convert food and store it. A very inefficient one won’t.
In a Western society that doesn’t need that sort of famine mode it becomes a nuisance and not a benefit.

Silverbirchleaf · 25/05/2026 13:37

I could have written your post, with a few adjustments. Told myself at the beginning of the year, I was going to be a stone lighter now. I calorie counted, virtually cut out alcohol, cakes and threw out my lovely hot chocolate powder (contained sugar) I got for Christmas. Swopped to herbal tea.

people probably look at me and assume I spend the day eating cream cakes . I don’t.

I weigh 2lb more. I could cry. Actually, I have cried.

Didimum · 25/05/2026 13:31

Owly11 · 24/05/2026 09:12

You aren't eating enough!!! Your body is probably in starvation mode and desperately clinging onto fat. You need to eat more, eat more fat and get more active. You need to increase your metabolic rate not send it comatose with so few calories. Also your weight is not wildly fluctuating it looks pretty stable to me.

Starvation mode is a myth. Please don’t perpetuate it.

HeavyHeidi · 25/05/2026 13:28

of course calorie deficit doesn't mean that there's a magical number and you will lose weight if you eat less than that. And yes people have different metabolism, and there are many things that affect it - I have thyroid disease and there's a huge difference in how much I can eat depeding on if I'm hyper or hypo. Calorie deficit means you need to eat less than you personally burn, and yes you will lose weight if you do that, we can't live on fresh air and sunlight.
