Daughter broke neighbours bike

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:00

Basically as it says. Brand new bike which for some reason she jumped on when walking passed. No idea what she was thinking but it’s snapped something and seems can’t be fixed. I wasn’t aware until this morning when another neighbour mentioned it and gave me recommendations for where to go for a replacement.

Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids. I have spoke to my daughter but she can’t explain why she did it . It’s totally out of character. AIBU not to buy a new bike?

Can you try taking it Back to the shop, if under 6 months claim its faulty “not fit for purpose” key words

You need to lean into the anger on here and take action - the kid being sent to say sorry doesn't replace the bike.
Go to the parents, tell them it can't be fixed and they need to replace - do not sit back and let them get away with it

Agree. I feel bad for reverse now but hearing the strong feelings has given me some confidence to speak to them.

Bikes are a serious matter at any age!Grin They can't expect an apology to be the end of it. They need to replace it - no question.

Pearlmaster500 · 23/05/2026 20:27

Ahhh you had me fooled with the reverse! Thought you were a right w… for a minute.. 😂

OP please don’t let them get away with not sorting the bike out, they should absolutely replace it or get it fixed. If that was me I’d be absolutely mortified I can’t believe they haven’t offered to sort it out. Who showed you a replacement?

oh my! I didn’t expect such a strong response! @ThisSunnyBea got it. It was my child’s bike and that’s the response I got from the parents. Financially we’re struggling and I wondered if that made me over sensitive hence the reverse.

I am gutted tbh. I saved for ages for it and the kids are out in their bikes all day long here so that’s her left out. How he did it don’t know. He came over to say sorry which made me more mad 😡

Oh bless you that is so shit. I am so sorry you’ve had to experience that. I truly realise now how shit people are raised - it starts so simply. Kids are just kids… until one day they aren’t, but because parents haven’t taught them right from wrong they’re a horrendous bully, a terrible partner, a line manager that makes someone’s job a nightmare. Basic kindness starts on childhood. Shame on them.

Curious to know how (presumably) a child can break a bike beyond repair so easily. Also curious to see if the OP will dare come back to this thread. Perhaps they will if it’s a reverse…

It was a kids bike and not expensive so maybe that was part of the reason it broke easy? I don’t know much about bikes but he outgrew his last one so fast I couldn’t justify an expensive one

Kids being kids?? Heaven help us if this sort of things is now ‘normal’.

Of course you need to replace the bike. I’d be taking a DD’s pocket money for 6 months to pay for it. And FFS tell her to have a little more respect for other people’s property in future.

You need to buy a new bike, why on earth would your child decide to just get on someone else’s bike? I’d be furious with you both

It's a reverse so not the op child

ohyesido · 23/05/2026 20:24

Great it’s a reverse. Bravo

He absolutely should replace it. It's brand new! I mean if it was an old toy maybe not but brand new it needs replacing

Speak to his parents again it’s unfair

They both young kids. Who was supervising?

It doesn’t matter who was supervising the parents need to replace the bike their child stomped on. They should also be giving him a damn good lesson in why you don’t intentionally break other peoples things.

MissMoneyFairy · 23/05/2026 20:22

What did his parents actually say, do they know he stomped on it deliberately.

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:19

Stomped on it rather than rides it

It's not kids being kids. It's criminal damage and the person whose bike it is now doesn't have one. You are responsible for replacing it.

This. Why should your neighbour suffer because your daughter broke their property. Property that she had absolutely no right to touch.

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:18

Oh and he is 8 and my daughter 7

Destroying people's property isnt just kids being kids though, is it? Aren't you embarrassed? Of course you need to replace it!

Sweepyed · 23/05/2026 20:18

Think depends on age.
but also … where was the bike as our neighbours have been leaving scooters etc on the very busy path when their garden us less than 2 feet away.
i wouldnt make anyone pay for standing on those as they are a huge risk to pedestrians.

Also has she admitted it as eye witness can definitely be wrong another parent accused my kid of something that they didnt do.

AllyMacbealmyarse · 23/05/2026 20:17

Are you being serious? Your daughter, for no reason broke the brand new (no doubt treasured) possession of some other child and you just expect them to go without or magic up another bike. Of course you buy another one, and you make your daughter write a letter of apology and use this as a very important teachable moment. Anything else makes you an utter bastard.

cannynotsay · 23/05/2026 20:17

Reverse???
