Daughter broke neighbours bike

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:00

Basically as it says. Brand new bike which for some reason she jumped on when walking passed. No idea what she was thinking but it’s snapped something and seems can’t be fixed. I wasn’t aware until this morning when another neighbour mentioned it and gave me recommendations for where to go for a replacement.

Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids. I have spoke to my daughter but she can’t explain why she did it . It’s totally out of character. AIBU not to buy a new bike?

It sounds like a cheap piece of crap bike if that’s all it took to break it, I’m sure it’s repairable

YABU. If your child has broken someone else's bike, then obviously you offer to replace it like for like, without being asked.
Depending on your child's age, I'd also be reducing her pocket money by a little bit every week for a while - even though it won't cover the whole cost, she needs to understand the consequences of her actions.

It's a reverse.

UnderMirkwood · 24/05/2026 00:50

See if you have a Repair Cafe in your area and if so try them to see if they can fix the bike for free. Next time look for second hand bikes in your area, you'll probably pick up a decent quality bike for cheaper than brand new.

LivingTheDreamish · 24/05/2026 00:38

Mmmm. Sorry is all very well but neighbour should pay for the damage too. I'm sure it can be fixed at a bike shop, though that won't be cheap either. Get a written estimate for the repair and go have a chat with them. I wouldn't just let it go, even if they never pay up they I'd want them to know how cross I was.

Your child broke property belonging to someone else for no reason. Of course you are responsible for replacing it!

This.

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:25

It was a kids bike and not expensive so maybe that was part of the reason it broke easy? I don’t know much about bikes but he outgrew his last one so fast I couldn’t justify an expensive one

I am so confused.

You originally said it was your daughter who broke the bike, indicating it was a girl who did it. But it being a reverse, it was actually someone else's daughter that did it. Unless you were inserting your own daughter into the original post, and posing her as the perpetrator. Which, if you were pretending to be the neighbour, doesn't really make sense (do you see how ridiculous this is sounding).

However you then say "he came over and apologised", "I don't know how he did it" and "he" is 8.

Right, ok. So you have the daughter, and it was the neighbours BOY who broke the bike.

But NOW you're saying - when asked about it breaking so easily - "he" outgrew "his" last bike fast, that's why you didn't buy an expensive one? Who is "he"? You're the mother of the DAUGHTER aren't you?

This is why reverses are fucking stupid. Stop being so convoluted and just ask things outright as yourself, and tell the truth.

Cos I'm honestly not sure this story is even real. It seems utter bullshit where you are forgetting which gender the characters are supposed to be 🙄

@Fortheloveofpizza Personally if it was me I’d never ask for a replacement and put it down to kids being kids.

Don't be ridiculous. Replace the bike, punish daughter.

I think it’s find to text neighbour to tell them it’s broken and ask them to either take it to a repair shop tomorrow or transfer the £60 it cost

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 24/05/2026 00:27

My bike broke recently when it fell over, and a repair man in a bike shop im London fixed it in three minutes and charged only £2 so worth a try (the neighbours should have offered to do themselves!)

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 24/05/2026 00:25

My son also is in a phase of being intentionally destructive and I would offer to pay for anything he broke (eg a child’s toy at soft play recently)

Stepsisterfromhell · 24/05/2026 00:20

Im not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but you might want to check your household insurance as the bike may be covered. Of course the excess may be more than the bike is worth but worth checking. If not, then yes your neighbour should replace the bike.

StrictlyCoffee · 24/05/2026 00:15

Even cheap bikes should be robust to withstand being stood on by an 8 year old. The parents are CFs and they should pay but I guess there’s not much you can do if they won’t . Take it to a bike shop and they might be able to fix it or if not there are places that do up old bikes and either give them away or sell on cheaply

ThatLemonBee · 24/05/2026 00:14

Are you for real ? Your child broke someone’s brand new bike ! Get the child a new one now

Amirina · 24/05/2026 00:07

Definitely try a bike shop, I'd be surprised if it's unfixable.

Whatever MNHQ says about reverses, people are perfectly entitled to find them annoying and to say so.

purpleme12 · 24/05/2026 00:05

I'm glad I looked at all OP's posts before I bothered to respond

Hate these reverse threads

Trifecta · 24/05/2026 00:03

Why TF do you think the bike owner should pay to replace a bike your kid deliberately broke? Why them instead of YOU? I think you knew the answer before you posted, if this is even genuine. Ridiculous.

EDIT: Okay, I see it’s a reverse. Why do that?

RollOnSunshine · 23/05/2026 23:54

Yes you need to have the bike fixed. Either take into a bike shop or but an equivalent replacement from Ebay or Marketplace.

I cannot believe you needed to ask!

Nairsmellsbad · 23/05/2026 23:29

The reverse and the fact that your child seems to have changed sex makes me think you are BU. Otherwise, just go to a bike shop and see what a repair will cost

Aye. This.

Selkie33 · 23/05/2026 23:48

@ANEC & @Miranda65 fyi, this thread is a reverse.

It was @Fortheloveofpizza's child's bike which was broken, her child did not break the bike, the neighbour's child did!

Fortheloveofpizza · 23/05/2026 20:18

oh my! I didn’t expect such a strong response! @ThisSunnyBea got it. It was my child’s bike and that’s the response I got from the parents. Financially we’re struggling and I wondered if that made me over sensitive hence the reverse.

I am gutted tbh. I saved for ages for it and the kids are out in their bikes all day long here so that’s her left out. How he did it don’t know. He came over to say sorry which made me more mad 😡

I’m sorry, but your daughter, for what ever reason jumped on a neighbours bike, damaged it and you think they’re out of order for asking for a replacement.

I wouldn’t have waited for the request I’d have gone round pronto to pay for it.

There would also be consequences for her stupidity. If you let her get away with it she’ll assume she can do it again.

ToSayYouHaveNoChoiceIsAFailureOfImagination · 23/05/2026 23:15

Where do you live OP, my kid fancies doing a tap dance on a car. You don't mind if she uses yours do you? It's just kids being kids

deepseaargyllfish · 23/05/2026 23:06

Seems very unreasonable to buy a brand-new replacement. You should certainly pay for it to be repaired.

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 23/05/2026 23:03

Ahh Just seen its a reverse. I was about to tell you you were being a knob!
Absolutely they should replace, I would if my child did this.
I hope you get it sorted.
