Airport security

Clearly the airport is the last place you should be stomping your feet and arguing with staff

but confiscating a really really bloody expensive liquid because the SEE THROUGH BOTTLE says 150ml and it’s clearly half empty - therefore under 100mls purely because the label says 150mls?!

And she didn’t throw it in the bin she put it on the shelf in front of her. Robbed, I was bloody robbed

AIBU - the rule is the liquid amount; not the amount the bloody bottle says

(Yes I know the rules)

(yes I really do know the rules)

(yes I know you aren’t allowed to take more than 100mls through)

(why did I try then? - because the rule says you can’t take more than 100mls through - not yoh can’t take a bottle marked at 150mls which is clearly half empty through)

(no I didn’t check my baggage)

(because it wasn’t worth the cost for a two night stay and hang luggage was fine)

(yes I know this is a first world problem and some people can’t fly anywhere)

But she didn’t throw it into the big box of confiscated liquids did she. She tucked it away on the shelf in front of her

What even happens to all the stuff they confiscated? It gets binned? Bullshit it does

It really doesn't matter what happened to it. It was no longer yours. You didn't follow the rules. You were not allowed to travel with it, so it was removed, it was that or forfeit your flight and bring your oil home safely. I would rather it was used than binned if it were me.

Still pissed off tbh

Yes, the rules are different at different airports.. And it's easy to find out which roles apply to them airport you are flying from.

Some, that haven't yet upgraded their security equipment, need the bottles to be under 100ml.

Some now can allow bottles up to 2l. These are currently, I believe, in the minority.

If you aren't sure then either check, or keep your bottles under 100ml.

There's only one person responsible for the issue that you faced, and it's not the woman that took the bottle from you.

FettleOfKish · 23/05/2026 19:24

Jersey briefly relaxed to the 2 litre rule, and now they’ve tightened up again. If you check the rules for all the airports you’re travelling through and stick to the minimum then you can’t go far wrong.

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 19:13

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 19:05

So the upshot is multiple airports have different rules.

Some allow 2lt through, some don’t allow mini travel bottles unless they are pre-marked (not at home) as 100mls or less.

Some airports change their rules throughout the year

You might leave one airport with one set of rules and travel through another with a different set of rules.

The rules are there to keep us safe, except the rules are all different.

Nobody really knows what the rules are for but we all obey them anyway

I suspect they were having trouble at Manchester with the 2l thing tbh.

They were having a lot of bags pulled and they were still having to manually check last time I went through. This is why they defaulted back to the 100ml. Tbh if makes more sense until all other airports bring in 2l rules anyway tbh.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 23/05/2026 19:12

Why not just own the mistake and stop whinging? You'd come across far better, IMO.

This is why you research.

It takes two minutes to google and check the rules for your airports.

coneyislandoldspot · 23/05/2026 19:07

YABU. The rules very clearly state the container must be under 100ml (or under 2L if you’re flying from an airport with the new scanners). You can’t take a water bottle through even if it is pretty much empty.

You CAN'T do this at Manchester Airport!!!!

Last year I took a full 2 litre bottle through which was allowed through according to their rules. If I hadn't checked the rules again I would have been caught out.

They have the new scanners.

So yeah CHECK WHAT THE AIRPORT RULES SAY ON THE DAY YOU FLY BECAUSE THEY KEEP CHANGING.

Edited

You can. All the travel bottles I have say 100ml clearly on them. I’ve had them for years, as I thought that was rule back then too (and if it wasn’t I wasn’t arguing with security that it was 100ml without being able to easily prove that).

Brickiscool · 23/05/2026 18:31

Because half empty is subjective. Was it really 75ml or could it have been two thirds or three fifths. Was it 99.5ml or 100.05ml.

Rules make these things clear!

Tillow4ever · 23/05/2026 18:25

I’ve only travelled abroad once in the just 20 years. Even I knew it was the container size, not the contents. Sorry op, this one’s on you. You’re just mad that you didn’t read the rules properly.

Cablestitches · 23/05/2026 17:25

“Some airports may allow you to take liquid in
containers that hold up to 2 litres of liquid”

Why?? Why is this even a thing then. Just make the rule and stick with it

Because some airports have a new security system that's getting rolled out

tilypu · 23/05/2026 18:15

It's fairly clear that you don't know the rules.

Sorry, this is on you.

m1ghtl1ke · 23/05/2026 18:11

Annoying but the rules have been in place for Years. I’m sure she didn’t steal your oil
I mean would you want someone’s second hand cosmetics/ skincare

Livpool · 23/05/2026 18:06

Security have no idea what might be in a half used bottle so I can't see them looking to taking it home.

Yetone · 23/05/2026 17:47

You might get new scanners on the way out only to find that coming home the airport at your holiday destination doesn’t.

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 17:47

Oh and yes it WAS the same terminal.

It's bonkers.

I do know last time when I went through with a 2litre bottle (which was obvious and in a side pocket so they can't have missed it) they were having a huge number of bag rejections.

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 17:39

JustAnUdea · 23/05/2026 17:28

Next time, decant your luquid.
Thats why you can buy mini bottles!

RedToothBrush · 23/05/2026 17:35

AIBU - the rule is the liquid amount; not the amount the bloody bottle says

It depends on the airport entirely.

I read the rules for Manchester airport this week. It says the following:

You can pack liquids in your hand luggage, as long as each liquid is under 100ml. These can be left in your hand luggage during the Security search. Because of this liquid limit, we recommend packing them in your hold luggage where possible.
Please note: Liquids in containers larger than 100ml cannot go through Security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions.

If you wish to bring your own containers to hold 100ml or less, the container must have printed on it the measurement that the container can hold. Travel sets of containers that do not have measurements on them will not be allowed through security. Handwritten measurements or stickers are also not acceptable.

So it is explicit.

I had an argument with a friend about this yesterday who said her son went through security with more recently. I showed her and said nope it's changed again since and yes I had previously been through in the last twelve months and they were allowing more but they'd changed the rules again in April.

So my advice is to check the airport website for the latest as it doesn't seem to be changing regularly.

But as you can see from above and screenshot, Manchester's rules explicitly state it must be in a bottle that holds no more than 100ml AND it needs to have the size printed on it (so you can't self dispense, which is a massive step backwards imho).

You really think she took it because she wanted a manky half used bottle of oil? Grim

MyAutumnCrow · 23/05/2026 17:31

May I just do a special shout out to security at Gatwick who displayed one hell of sense of humour dealing with me and DP. It was like airport security meets the Chuckle Brothers last time we went through. We actually did all end up laughing. And then DP's trousers fell down.

HappyBlueDonkey · 23/05/2026 17:31

You can take 2L bottles of water and all sorts in lots of airports now. However those with the old rules still have always been 100ml max containers

NConthe · 23/05/2026 17:31

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 23/05/2026 17:28

That's for things like medicines, baby milk, things for special diets, etc.

No it’s not. It’s some airports where they have the new scanners
