To think some older women having tax payers funded ivf are hypocrites?

There seems to be a substantial group of people who are ok with calling teen mums a waste of their tax money but then leave child bearing too late and expect the tax payers to foot the bill for their multiple ivf cycles which costs the tax payer up to 100 million a year.

Hypocrites!!!

This is certainly going to be a very unpopular opinion, but I do not think anyone should be having IVF on the NHS.
That is not what it was set up for.
Call me a Luddite, but if it isn't happening naturally there is probably a good reason.

And what “good reasons” would those be? Many children are conceived naturally and are born with disabilities and genetic disorders. And most IVF children are healthy.

Ernestinepine · 19/05/2026 11:08

I don’t know any of these women.

but i will say; the likelihood of them being contributors to the tax system is a lot higher than those that have a baby at 16

Yes I’m not criticising every woman that has ivf btw just the hypocritical ones. I know someone like this disrespected me for being a young mum and then she’s off having nhs ivf. It’s also just socially acceptable to have ivf on the nhs but not to be a teen mums. There will be a lot of hypocrites like what I’ve described and it’s not about everyone that has ivf

I mean this woman might have been trying for years IVF isn't handed out like sweets there is a process to go through, or do you think women should just have babies younger regardless of a partner or stable relationship incase they might be infertile or have difficulty conceiving ?

It’s less socially acceptable to be a teenage mum because the negative impacts on said teenage mother’s life overall are enormous and usually life long.

Add to this that teenage boys do not become teenage fathers at the same rate as teenage girls become mothers, which indicates that it is adult men getting young girls pregnant and a degree of predatory behaviour or abuse has taken place.

No, we want to see the link between people who think teen mums shouldn't be taxpayer funded and older people who expect taxpayers to fund their own IVF.

Why? Do you not believe those people exist? I personally know a few and I don’t have a massive circle then there’s just the fact it’s socially acceptable to hate teen mums and it’s fine to have IVF on the NHS.

Again not a criticism of everyone that has ivf on the nhs just talking about the hypocrites here so no need to feel personally attacked unless you are one?

I currently have a , mid 30s family member who is pregnant after two attempts at IVF . She wasn't funded through the NHS as the criteria for funding is very prescriptive and she just missed the cut of one of her test results . If she had qualified for NHS funding she would have been entitled to one attempt, the maximum for our area .
What we have learnt from this experience is that IVF is only available for women who have a very good chance of becoming pregnant and that attempts are limited .
Had she tried to get pregnant earlier or later her medical issue would have still been the same .
The NHS funds a range of people who have healthcare needs due to lifestyle choices and have various viewpoints on the spending of taxpayers money .
If the OP knows so many people who hold views she finds abhorrent she needs new friends .

You can google it. You think cycles of ivf on the nhs aren’t costing the tax payer? Do you know how much ivf costs?

A cycle of ivf via nhs is around same money as uc for an adult and child for 6mths /9mths

I was just about to post the same thing. Totally agree with you.

DefiantRabbit9 · 19/05/2026 11:05

Point to me a teenage mum who has been paying into the system for 20+ years, has a stable relationship and has their own place that they pay for.

cestlavielife · 19/05/2026 11:05

So one older person you know is getting funded ivf while berating a neighbour teen mum who got pregnant without help ?
They just envious op.
Unjustifiable but
Leave them to their feeings.

Lomonald · 19/05/2026 11:04

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 10:43

It’s not about nice older women who have ivf just the ones who judge teen mums and call them a waste of tax money and then go and have multiple nhs ivf cycles. Just seems hypocritical to me

Have you an example or personal experience to back your statement up, ?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/05/2026 11:03

If you're going to spout goady bollocks online it might be best to have some sort of facts to back up your statements
like any facts and figure really
pray tell how much does the nhs spend on ivf each year and what is the percentage of that that's spent on these nasty older teen hating mothers? 10%? 20? 5? I'm intrigued
and do they quiz them when they are referred for ivf regarding their views on teen mums?

cocoonme · 19/05/2026 11:03

I agree 🤷🏻‍♀️ people are happy to take out, but not happy to see others do the same

YooBlue · 19/05/2026 11:03

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 10:49

You see it online a lot as well. Insulting teen mums and accusing them of wasting tax money. Meanwhile the ivf industry is booming because of older women

But unless you are tracking individual posters and maintaining a spreadsheet of their opinions on different matters you have NO IDEA whether they are the same people.

You are talking about two separate issues with different impacts. Having an opinion that 15 isn't the ideal age to have a child is not usually about cost.

Older women having IVF may well be have been higher rate tax payers for years and contributed loads more than you - and will continue to do so and then leave loads to the nation in IHT.

It's complex, complicated, each stage of our health and welfare system is there for those who need it and are entitled under current policy. And you are a judgey and goady

(I was neither a teen Mum nor have had IVF)

AgnesX · 19/05/2026 11:03

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 10:44

I personally know some like this

I'm sure their experienced gynaecologist would be impressed by your knowledge. Age isn't the only factor for not being able to conceive.

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 11:02

B1anche · 19/05/2026 10:58

It's only hypocritical if they expect taxpayer funding but also criticise others for being taxpayer funded. How do you know these are one and the same people?

Can honestly say I haven’t heard the phrase ‘teen mums’. Or anyone using it.

I think it's a tv show of some kind, everyone dreams to be a reality tv "star" nowadays.

Snorlaxo · 19/05/2026 11:02

Did you want to add caesarians and “too posh to push” and being more expensive than a vaginal birth to complete your pregnancy hat trick ?

I believe you when you say that you got stick for being a teen mum but that’s not an excuse to criticise mums who needed IVF. How do you know that there aren’t physical issues that the man or woman would have faced if they had tried at 15?
IVF is a postcode lottery and (I think!) only one cycle is funded these days. A lot are going abroad and paying from their own pockets

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 19/05/2026 11:01

There are plenty of people that would say that nobody should have funded IVF. Not sure why you pick out older women

FennelGingerJasmineOrMint · 19/05/2026 11:01

Good grief! This thread is absolute nonsense.

Ophy83 · 19/05/2026 11:01

Older women can't get ivf on the NHS. If you are under 39 you can get 3 cycles. 40-42 get one. That's it.

What do you want links for? That ivf is expensive or that a lot of people hate teen mums and call them a waste of tax money?

I mean I can find links to both if you want but I thought this was just common knowledge

No I want links for the very specific post you made.

That the women complaining about teen Mothers are also the same women having IVF.

Thank you in advance.
