Absolutely abhorrent comment.
As you well know.

Correct - it is abhorrent. Not my statement, but the reality of life for girls and women in that backward country.

Why is it abhorrent? We're talking about a country steeped in so much misogyny that they treat women as less than animals. A country where they keep getting their wives pregnant over and over despite a lack of food, resources, and medical care. A country where even before the Taliban, they were misogynistic and saw women as lesser. Do you really think the vast majority care?

Ihatetomatoes · 18/05/2026 23:19

Well they are taking donations so I'd expect them to get the food aid there.

You are being slightly naive. There's been food charities for women and girls for decades, because girls don't get fed, particularly during food shortages. As said, the men decide this, the men control the conditions, they decide no contraception and baby after baby. They are in crisis, but we are just putting a sticking plaster on, decade after decade. In the west we've been schooled to have children under favourable conditions and only if solvent. Suggest family planning and we are accused of trying to depopulate the ME and parts of Africa.

Why is it abhorrent to say the men don’t care about selling their daughters? You’ll notice they are not selling their sons. The only two values of women in the very conservative areas of Afghanistan are 1) to sell off as a potential wife 2) to produce babies to keep the population going. It’s true that this value won’t be so widely held in the more cosmopolitan areas of Afghanistan, where if a woman is ‘lucky’, she’s more likely to have a husband who sees her as something more than a mere bedfellow, but the story of oppressive regimes which target women is as old as time. You may want to read up on how the nazi youths / young men thought it was fine to rape women, and guess you got punished for being raped? I’ll give you a clue it wasn’t the men.

I suspect that living under the Taliban it’s much safer to criticise the Americans for cutting aid than the regime for refusing to comply with conditions that would of allowed international aid to continue.

You’re probably right.

MsGreying · 19/05/2026 09:59

Ihatetomatoes · 18/05/2026 22:35

The report suggests that aid from overseas has been cut to them

Does the food aid get to the people who need it?
Does the regime benefit more than the people?

Many times the Afghanistan problem has been attempted to be solved and each time it fails.

The solution is probably not taking money from Billionaires. That's never the answer.

It’s absolute truth. And yes it’s abhorrent. These are our fathers, brothers and the sons we give life to as well as the male partners who primarily care about getting sex.

Swiftie1878 · 19/05/2026 08:24

Not enough to have fought for their rights.
I have no time for these men.

Instead of crying about having to SELL their daughters (to feed and access healthcare themselves!), why not mobilise and tackle the Taliban regime? Cowards, the lot of them.

Your ignorance is mind boggling

JacknDiane · 19/05/2026 09:42

‘Men selling their daughters’ - these men couldn’t give a flying fuck about their daughters or any girls/women, as you well know.

I saw earlier news articles where all the men could do was blame the Americans and the rest of us for withdrawing aid rather than themselves for creating a society that cannot exist without it. We are also not supposed to link this to Islam as a religion either.

Women are not allowed to go to health clinics in Afghanistan. They are closed because there are no female hcps due to no education or training for females.
Females cannot be treated by males.
Children cannot receive treatment unless a male accompanies them.
So I honestly can't see how food would get to women via health clinics unless enough men, relatives only, were willing to collect it and take it home.
A family member volunteered in a Sudanese refugee camp for a while. None of the foreign aid got anywhere near the refugees. It was small groups of volunteers who built shelters, got clothes, blankets and food in.

Can’t speak to your friends experience in Sudan because I don’t really know anyone on that mission but for AFG there are a few differences on the ground.

Women can and do go to health clinics - and they are not all closed, it’s one of the ways we provide nutrition support. - just as an example Afghan humanitarian fund (in UN we have country funds for every country in humanitarian response) allocated 6.3 million USD for health which supports just under 750, 000 to access healthcare including therapeutic feeding and nutrition for kids with severe malnutrition

The Taliban provided a waiver for health care (basically just obstetrics and gynaecology) for women to still provide services but very controlled and there is definitely difficulty to access.

notnowmaud · 19/05/2026 08:46

Well quite. The sons weren’t being sold. I wonder how much of the stale bread made it as far as home or did the men just eat it there and then? And yes the men would be the ones out trying to find food or employment since woman are no longer allowed to go outside. In the September 2025 earthquake the women were left to die. If I thought for one minute that any donation I made would go to the women and girls, then I’d absolutely donate. It won’t though. I’m sure there are some very good men who don’t support the Taliban regime, and don’t approve the appalling treatment of women, but until they are able to make their voices heard, there is very little which can be done. The Taliban will be blaming the current situation on the West, and many will believe their propaganda. Eventually there may be an uprising, in the early 70s Afghanistan was a much more progressive society, where women made up a decent proportion of the professional workforce and Kabul university was very much seen as a prestigious centre of learning with international recognition.

I think this is a very accurate observation.
I’ve just googled - when the Allied forces retreated in August 2021, the Taliban were vastly outnumbered by the broader adult male population of the country. These men were also armed.
Why didn’t they fight back?

Ihatetomatoes · 19/05/2026 09:12

If anyone's interested there are charities that help there. No-one is forced to be interested. Poor girls there, what sort of future

Yep the men betrayed the women and the girls. They always do. They can push us aside any time they want and they just love that fact. That is what they chose. Thats what most of the men would choose any time they get a choice. Given half a chance men here stab us in the back at any opportunity too. Historically proven, they as a group push women as a group away from employment and resources as soon as there is any competition. Then we are still expected to feel sorry for the poor men forced to sell their daughters rather than those daughters themselves.

I would wish for death in their society.

The Linda Norgrove Foundation run out of Scotland is an excellent charity that specifically helps women and children in Afghanistan. If you google them you can see the kind of things that the charity has supported over the last couple of years.

Thank you, I'll take a look

Did you see it. The men looked distraught that they couldn't provide for their children.

Oh please stop with the naivety. They are SELLING their children. Sorry, not children. Just daughters.
They look distraught for themselves, nobody else.

Donations of food?

The news report was shocking. Men selling their daughters for food or health care. It was awful to watch them cry and beg for help.😥
