I'm fed up with everyone tiptoeing around Brexit having been rubbish

We can all see how it hasn't stopped immigration, we don't have the more money for the NHS that was promised, and everyone is worse off. I'm sure even many who voted for it - who were conned at the time- also can see it was rubbish. Isn't it time for people to stop pretending it was a good idea. That doesn't mean we need to rejoin right now or blame anybody, but I think it's time to just face facts and stop trying to pretend it was a good idea.

I know what you're saying. Very few people in power have acknowledged plainly the damage Brexit did and how vulnerable we are as a result.

Thanks yes this is what I mean and you've explained it better than I did.

I am as anti Brexit as they come. However, I still do not want a firm commitment to rejoin the EU and all the uncertainty that brings for years and division. I think the intention to get closer to the EU by piecemeal and keep working on it, is what we need. I certainly cannot see us adopting the Euro any time soon.

Waitingfordoggo · 18/05/2026 19:48

Everyone I know talks openly about what a shit idea it was. I’m still fuming.

But then I think almost everyone I know probably voted Remain so they already knew it was a shit idea anyway.

I don’t know whether many of the Leave voters now admit it was a shit idea. I hope they do, and I also hope they examine their own approach to voting- especially how much research they do. Actual reading and thinking.

But I won’t hold my breath on that as recent events have indicated that many people still don’t think carefully about what they are voting for.

I blame Cameron. Why put such an important decision to a public vote when people can be so easily manipulated.

100% this!

OneTealShaker · 18/05/2026 19:47

Who is forcing you to tiptoe around it?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 18/05/2026 19:46

paddleboardingmum · 18/05/2026 19:45

I'm not saying nobody has talked about it! I'm saying we as a country are still largely pretending it was a sensible idea.

We aren’t though. And actually you said ‘everybody’ needs to stop tiptoeing.

I'm saying people (politicians, people on TV and so on) won't talk about how damaging it was @ToKittyornottoKitty I'm not saying nobody has discussed it for years am I, that would be silly. I'm saying people are not being straightforward enough about how badly it turned out.

‘People’ absolutely have talked about it, a lot! My point still stands.

Who in earth is "tiptoeing"?

No it's relentless yelling

I don't think anyone is tiptoeing tbh - I think it is 'writ large' that everyone knows it was a completely crap idea. The rest of Europe is both agog and laughing behind hands held to mouths.
Gun-> foot -> shoot self.

Interestingly Nigel Farage wrote a piece the other day highlighting to the people of Makerfield how Andy Burnham wants to re-enter the EU.

This makes me think there must be polling to show that the people in Reform/Brexit-voting communities like Makerfield still think Brexit has improved things.

I would be genuinely interested to hear how they perceive the effects of Brexit - and not in a condescending way, but because it’s a point of view I would like to better understand.

I recently spoke to a working class Brexit voter who has no regrets.

She said it wasn't really about leaving the EU. It was about sending a message to an establishment that despises people like her.

She also said the EU is a totally corrupt organisation that is obsessed with things like diversity quotas, and she hates that.

You are lying that everyone is ‘tiptoeing’, this has been widely discussed for years

Strange thing to say- I'm giving my opinion.

Well me too. I think stating everyone is tiptoeing around it is disingenuous really when it’s been such a hotly discussed topic for years.

JHound · 18/05/2026 19:35

Credittocress · 18/05/2026 19:31

I think most people who voted for it weren’t conned, and to say so is just patronising. The reason many who voted for it think it hasn’t worked is because the implementation has been left to people who wanted it to fail and therefore hasn’t been done competently or in the UK’s best interest.

Why would they want to worsen themselves by ensuring it was a failure? This is what the kids call “cope”.

How should it have been implemented and how would you account for the fact that it’s not simply us dictating what our post Brexit relationship would look like. Others get a say too.

It's all anyone talks about?

It's literally what Streeting is trying to make the by-election about - 10 years after the vote!

paddleboardingmum · 18/05/2026 19:33

People definitely don't blame Farage for it do they. For him to be so successful we have to pretend it was still all a good idea when it really wasn't.

OP posts:
SapphOhNo · 18/05/2026 19:32

I'm more annoyed/exhausted/furious about people still putting their trust in the grifters who said Brexit would be great e.g. Farage et al.
