It was coming. You dont get good reality TV without people suffering.

This news however is awful. Bloody awful.

A groom dressed in a dark suit and a bride dressed in white walk hand in hand along a sunlit grassy path, surrounded by tall green trees. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves. A large green Channel 4 logo sits to the left.

Married at First Sight UK 'brides' say they were raped by onscreen husbands

Channel 4 was aware of one of the rape claims before broadcast, but the woman involved still featured in the show.

It would've been better for them to state the names of the men, rather than allow speculation about innocent men, imo.

So option 1 is going to to be raped, option 2 which you consider to be good is an acid attack.

How are any of those options a good thing?

Did you misread my post or are you being deliberately obtuse?
He threatened to 'leave'... that is what I am referring to.
Him leaving is a good thing not raping her or throwing acid at her.
The only reason that wouldn't be a good thing is if she wanted him to stay, or more likely wanted him to stay so she could keep hold of her airtime.

The speculation’s already started.

Haven't been on socials so far today, but can't say I'm surprised...

I thought this too - did have an element of 'glass houses' about it. "Thank God it's not us for once!"

Yeah. It was the BBC saying look look it's not just us! Envy

Time for all 'reality' shows to end. They're all utter bullshit and just feed the inane internet age of low quality cheap crap. Then the 'stars' of these shows end up making millions from being on further reality shows or presenting jobs. Reality shows, 'talent' shows, and ant and dec, bin them all.

Yes, I agree - the original series were horses of a different colour. It changed when it went global and presumably to a different production company.

Outside of these revelations there has been an awful lot of gaslighting, bullying and borderline coercive control .

At the same time, I am not sure about BBC gleefully presenting it as their top story and promoting Panorama tonight. Proper investigative journalism is great but they are sensationalising it themselves.

I think they should ban these shows. It’s unlikely that anyone who isn’t in some way vulnerable is going to participate in something where you marry and therefore have sex with someone you’ve only just met. There’s a clear and obvious risk here.

I agree with this. They know there is an endless supply (encouraged by them) of not too bright/narcissistic/desperate for a leg up into a TV career/mentally unwell people who are queuing up to be expoited on reality TV. Its cheap telly when Eastenders costs over £1m an episode to make. God knows how much proper drama takes to make, plus the money being spread too thinly between too many providers. This thread shows why they do it. Its a win/win for them because so many people watch it and it costs peanuts compared to paying 100s of actors/writers and set designers/crew and putting on a drama.

Soontobesingles · 19/05/2026 10:07

The original MAFS was great - a few couples getting married and genuinely trying - or not! Brilliant tv - then it copied the Australian model and turned into an exploitative over produced nightmare cast with terrible people chosen for their personality disorders. Of course this was the result.

I’m actually stunned at this attitude. Women were RAPED.

seriously?

Followed by it’s already too sanitised. I mean once they really sanitise it so they cant get raped what is even the point? 🤢

It would be nice if rape allegations would be taken as seriously as discussions over a fucking blindfold.

I agree. Apologies for the derail.

Hmm not really throughout. If it was throughout you wouldn’t be getting the comments. That second post for example was shit. Referencing rape allegations and then in the same breath bemoaning the end of ‘good’ reality tv. Terrible tone, so you’re going to get pulled up on it. Again and again, that’s how it works.

It has been throughout, i'm very clearly disgusted by the rape allegations

Reality tv is sanitised now. Understandably as tv channels dont want to be sued, but it means that only 'professional' wannabe influencers are hired and its no longer real people and therefore 'staged'

This is separate to women being stealthed or raped

I dont think that these rape allegations are unique to mafs, sorry. They could happen on any reality show.

Traitors, virgin island, big brother, love island

Anywhere where people are forced to spend time together, men and women, there is the potential for men to take advantage of women

Nowhere on the panorama show was there a complaint about the content of the show. This may still have been an issue for the complainants but the issue was clearly; these men took advantage of me because I didnt want to lose my place on this show.

The likely knee jerk reaction of these tv shows will be to only cast 'professionals' and thats what i meant by 'reality tv is finished now' - which is what happened with love island imo

Which i am sad about - its not good highbrow stuff but its light entertainment for when i'm bloody exhausted

Can i live now?

The blindfold is to represent the law being applied impartially, objectively and equally and in this case it is not. One of the accusers stayed with her 'husband' for six weeks after the end of the show in which she is now stating she was subject to (at best) sexual assault. If you were accused of sexual assault under these circumstances, would you not expect people to effectively laugh in her face? These allegations should never have seen the light of day let alone be in the public domain.

Accuse me of word salad all you like but the way the law is rightly applied means there are people being accused of stuff that they may or may not have done but the time to act appropriately was AT THE TIME. Not now when they have zero hope of defending themselves.

Lady Justice is blindfolded and carries scales to weigh the evidence equally.

Aren’t they filming the new series of the UK version now? It’s usually filmed around now, and I think John A came over from Oz to take over from Mel when she got ill. What will they do with that?

According to the article on BBC news, it's already been filmed and is due to be shown later this year.

sittingonabeach · 19/05/2026 09:51

@SignGrudgeBluebook but it’s pretty obvious it’s exploitative tv, like Love Island and similar programmes where intimacy is pretty much expected from the start. It’s grim to start with but there was bound to be coercion going on either from fellow contestants or from people working on the show to ramp up the ratings. Not sure how viewers couldn’t see this and why some of these revelations are a shock

I agree. I have never seen the UK version, only MAFS Aus.

The whole show has changed so much. People seem desperate to build a brand and will do and put up with anything to garner exposure for this it seems.

If it gets much worse the 'experts' will be little more than pimps.

SwatTheTwit · 19/05/2026 09:53

Good.

Can’t lie, I’ve always wondered how safe and vetted it was because my country’s MAFS seems to get some right weirdos on it. No way I’d want to be in closed quarters with any of them.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 19/05/2026 09:52

SignGrudgeBluebook · 19/05/2026 08:53

I agree with this. The reality of this situation, unless the content of Panorama is wrong, is that these cases would be thrown out before they even get to a hearing. The grooms in question would be well advised to lawyer up and start suing for defamation. The time to act was at the time and if and when there was evidence. Panorama overhyped a situation that, arguably, should not even be in the public domain.

And yet - no-one is surprised that victims of grooming take time to realise what has been done to them.

Flyingkitez · 19/05/2026 09:50

The bitchiness is awful. We teach children that bullying is not acceptable. Yet fully grown adults seem to get away with it generally based on looks. I have struggled with the Australian series this year. It’s a show I dip in and out of. A lot of drama seems to be pushed for tv. Another show was age of attraction where a 19 year old had to move in with her late thirties match. It didn’t sit right with me at all.

Candlebook · 19/05/2026 08:36

Exactly this. I remember watching the original couple of series and they were really good. It was a completely different format to the current set up. It used to be just two couples who were followed for the whole series. More of a documentary style and much more in-depth in terms of how the experiment was working. The format then totally changed to include more couples, drunken dinner parties, rage baiting, group activities- all set up to make drama and blazing rows (e.g. your standard Big Brother/Love Island/Jeremy Kyle spectacle).

But if there wasn’t an audience for MAFS and Love Island, they wouldn’t make them

Anyone who watched, encouraged this type of programme

BIossomtoes · 19/05/2026 09:44

SignGrudgeBluebook · 19/05/2026 09:37

But this is skewed. People that have watched it already were not aware of these allegations. People that watch it in the future would hope that measures are put in place to prevent this in the future.

As for your 'abused and exploited', that statue over the top of law courts, the woman holding the balance and wearing a blindfold. She has a blindfold for a reason.
