It was coming. You dont get good reality TV without people suffering.

This news however is awful. Bloody awful.

A groom dressed in a dark suit and a bride dressed in white walk hand in hand along a sunlit grassy path, surrounded by tall green trees. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves. A large green Channel 4 logo sits to the left.

Married at First Sight UK 'brides' say they were raped by onscreen husbands

Channel 4 was aware of one of the rape claims before broadcast, but the woman involved still featured in the show.

Hi folks

We're removing a lot of victim blaming from this thread. Further posts that victim blame will very likely end in suspensions, so please avoid this moving forward.

I'd rather they be challenged because others reading will have those views, but I can understand it might be massively triggering for some.

Gosh I’d forgotten all about Wifeswap.

Maybe we do need to have a real look at the reality TV sector. I hold my hands up and say I watch MAFS but I do find it’s getting worse and more shocking every year.

I’d also never understood how two people who just met could share a bed.

JenniferBooth · 19/05/2026 17:18

Maybe just maybe if young ppl didnt have to struggle so much with jobs and rents etc they wouldnt see this as a valid choice Some have done reality shows both in the past and currently because they see it as the only way out.
I was on the old workfare in the late 90s and i can see why ppl would choose a reality show over that.

No, but the whole premise is clearly unethical.
The whole process is clearly set up to steer people into sexual relationships.
To make it harder for them to say no (and be seen to 'fail' on national TV)
To remove them from normality where their usual guard is down (like an extreme version of ill advised 'holiday romances'
To give them the false security of 'experts' and 'welfare' - when it is only in the production company's best interests to keep the participants on board and the drama high.

I have only watched small sections, by accident when waiting for something else to begin. Obviously distasteful and unethical.

All Reality programmes are.

Wife Swap was horrible - involving the children etc - and it has just got worse.

Are the general public being groomed too, to think this shit is normal and OK?

I was never OK, even before these allegations were revealed.

We need to do away with this 'rough but consensual sex' defence that so many men (and in this case, the production company) seem to be hiding behind, sex must not end up with women being covered in bruises.

Shame on the posters who are victim blaming.

I'm sure we all know it's risky, we just still hold the man responsible for his own dick at all times, because a) it's his dick and b) rape isn't mitigated when it's easy. We don't start dribbling on about how it's the woman's fault up to some unspecified point. Well, at least we don't if we're not misogynistic victim blamers.

So I'll make it easy for you because at this point you appear to be very close to getting it. The man is in fact entirely responsible for his dick even if the woman just met him, even if she only met him a day ago, even if she met him on a horrible exploitative trashy TV show. There is no point at which we blame her for not knowing him well enough; God knows enough women in long term relationships get blindsided, not that that makes a difference. As long as the dick is attached to him and controlled by him, what he does with it is on him, no matter how easy or hard stuff is.

Capisce?

I was having school debates about the ethics of Nikki's mental health in Big Brother twenty years ago.

It's not a new idea that shoving people in front of cameras and provoking them to behave badly is ethically questionable.

Indeed, viewing pleasure before raped women and vulnerable 'contestants'.

Its horrible to believe that people put their TV enjoyment over real people's dreadful experiences.

Mangan review

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2026/may/19/the-dark-side-of-married-at-first-sight-review-panorama-documentary-allegations

"..There is enough in this half-hour programme to fuel a hundred, a thousand documentaries. And that’s before you factor in the responses proliferating on social media: that the women’s “failure” to report the attacks to police means that they are liars in pursuit of lucrative compensation claims, that going on a reality show means that you are an attention-seeker who has just found another way to seek it (or that you, somehow, deserve everything you got), that a man’s decision not to pull out is a meaningless act, and so on and on – and what they tell us about sociocultural attitudes and sexual politics today.

The programme itself is largely concerned with timelines – when did CPL and Channel 4 know which allegations, when should filming or broadcasting have been stopped – and what duty of care is owed by commissioners and programme-makers to their contributors. This is surely what will most concern the people carrying out the external review into contributor welfare that was commissioned last month and the lawyers doubtless massing around the companies and individuals concerned.

For those watching, however, the takeaways might be slightly different. Those entirely unfamiliar with the show might be boggling at the very idea of it. Those more jaded might limit themselves to sighing at the notion that any amount of pre-show vetting, welfare and psychological support (and CPL says its protocols are “gold standard” and “industry-leading”) can guard against harm in a situation where strangers of the opposite sex are put together, isolated from friends and family, required to take part in “games” (such as ranking the attractiveness of other contestants in front of partners) that increase volatility, and are subject to intense pressures to perform in all sorts of ways they might otherwise be able to resist. And all in a world where violence against women and girls from men is rampant and so widely tolerated as to be largely invisible and virtually decriminalised.

If this is the end of MAFS, I’ll be delighted. If it’s not, I won’t be at all surprised."

The Dark Side of Married at First Sight review – there is enough awful detail here to fuel 1,000 more exposés

The allegations of rape and sexual assault in this documentary about the Channel 4 series are hugely troubling and revealing. Surely this is the end for MAFS?

But plenty of women are sure and turn out to be wrong. So I ask again: what is the exact point, that we can apply equally across the board with no confusion, where a man, and not the woman he is with, becomes responsible for his own dick?

Nope me neither. These people actually walk amongst us, unfortunately.
Although having said that if I am completely honest I have been waiting for it to pop up and am somewhat surprised it took till page 7 to appear.

God forbid that poster has a daughter/sister/female friend who one day finds themself in the same situation as these poor women and some tool on the internet speculating that they probably made it up "to ruin a man's reputation" .
