It was coming. You dont get good reality TV without people suffering.

This news however is awful. Bloody awful.

A groom dressed in a dark suit and a bride dressed in white walk hand in hand along a sunlit grassy path, surrounded by tall green trees. Bright sunlight filters through the leaves. A large green Channel 4 logo sits to the left.

Married at First Sight UK 'brides' say they were raped by onscreen husbands

Channel 4 was aware of one of the rape claims before broadcast, but the woman involved still featured in the show.

We sporadically watch it. It was very uncomfortable at times and this year a lady was bullied and shown in an awful light because she didn’t like who she’d been matched with.
the original shows were good, no drama of this sort and followed much nicer path to maybe being together.

the other reality tv show that turns my stomach is the one about virgins. Some of these people appear very vulnerable and they are filmed doing things that are very intimate. That’s a show I’d love to see banned - it’s exploitation

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 19/05/2026 19:36

@IhateborisSO good. I think everyone should watch it!

RudolphTheReindeer · 19/05/2026 19:12

I can't quote now but bloody hell I clearly missed something that was obvious to everyone else earlier when I defended TidyRaven for commenting that Polly had temper tantrums over Adam not sleeping with her. I thought they were just joining in the wider convo going on where we'd discussed how experts actively coerced people to have sex (as Adam and Polly were one such couple). I do not agree with any of the victim blaming posts!

@IhateborisSomeone watched ‘Believe me’!

Yes! Wasn't it brilliant (but depressing and very upsetting)?

I know when an orgasm is building. Do you think it's different with men?

He wouldn't know until the very last second that he was 'there'?

BIossomtoes · 19/05/2026 18:57

Looks that way, doesn’t it? Poor men. 🙄

”unable to control his lust” really equates to being a rapist in my view. I have been with my husband for 43 years. 39 married. We used the “pull out” method. We have two sons, one a drunken error (on both our parts) but the best one we ever made, one planned. At no time was he ever “unable to control his lust”. If you’re unable to “control your lust”, you should never be around women.

God forbid you have a brother, son or father who ends up having an ex who uses a documentary to accuse them of rape, without any kind of fair trial.

Who says they won't get a fair trial?

Do you have any idea of the figures for false rape accusations vs the figures for reported rapes that result in a conviction?

sheitani · 19/05/2026 18:51

I believe all these "love"/relationship/"marriage" reality shows should be stopped. I've nothing against reality shows based on crafts, cookerey, etc (although even those have had their issues), but putting a bunch of young people in a hothouse environment where it is implied that they will have sex with one or more other contestants, who they essentially know nothing about, is just asking for trouble. We've already had suicides of Love Island competitors and a presenter.. How long before a (probably female) contestant dies and the male on-screen partner claims the "rough sex" defence? There is a conflict between the channel wanting an "exciting" show with lots of drama, and the channel being tasked with physical and psycological well-being of the contestants, and I think the pull of big ratings & viewers will alsways win out over "boring" stuff like safeguarding.

TidyRaven · 19/05/2026 18:49

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 19/05/2026 16:07

Nope me neither. These people actually walk amongst us, unfortunately.
Although having said that if I am completely honest I have been waiting for it to pop up and am somewhat surprised it took till page 7 to appear.

God forbid that poster has a daughter/sister/female friend who one day finds themself in the same situation as these poor women and some tool on the internet speculating that they probably made it up "to ruin a man's reputation" .

Indeed. It's fucking disgusting. If no one watched this shit, it simply wouldn't exist.

Exactly.

But sure as long as the op and others get their light entertainment what does it matter? What will they watch now?

And only 3% of reported rapes result in a conviction.

“Consensual” is the go to defence. No wonder women don’t report rape. They end up on trial themselves.

And only 3% of reported rapes result in a conviction.

sittingonabeach · 19/05/2026 18:27

I wonder how much is discussed about consent behind the scenes. Bearing in mind in programmes like this, Love Island etc where contestants are pretty much expected to have sex with at least one other contestant. I can imagine quite a few males would assume implied consent (obviously not acceptable), and pressure being put on them from people in front and behind the cameras.

Where does sexual assault/harassment come into play, again from all parties.

Differentforgirls · 19/05/2026 18:17

Anonbakerylady · 19/05/2026 16:49

We need to do away with this 'rough but consensual sex' defence that so many men (and in this case, the production company) seem to be hiding behind, sex must not end up with women being covered in bruises.

Shame on the posters who are victim blaming.

I had forgotten this.
A very valid point.
In the most recent Australia series , Joel was ridiculed for having a teddy bear. Yes, it is a bit childish, but I doubt it would have gained the attention if he had been a woman.
So much for guys being encouraged to be open and sensitive !!!

You're right! The latest series also mentioned the term "masculine energy" so much! It was so patronising and toxic.

Hi folks

We're removing a lot of victim blaming from this thread. Further posts that victim blame will very likely end in suspensions, so please avoid this moving forward.

Thank you.
