AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:46

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

Wee only. Go upstairs for a poo ffs.

RebeccaRedhat · 18/05/2026 16:33

I banned my family from using our downstairs loo, because they bloody stink! And it's right by the front door so if anyone uses it and then someone comes to the house, there's a shitty aroma welcoming them into the hallway. Lovely!

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 18/05/2026 16:33

And this is why my absolute deal breaker when house buying is a saniflo.

They are disgusting. And the sound they make when your son drops his toothbrush down them is something else.

We had two. Note use of past tense

Don’t be silly, you can’t have seriously assumed the entire world disappears for a shit immediately after breakfast.

I admit quite freely that I empty my bowels immediately after the first coffee of the day. Then I shower. I've been doing that all my adult life.

I'm with you OP, we have a macerator in a cloakroom too. A normal toilet isn't possible with the layout of the reverse level house.

When we had an upgraded one, the engineer actually said to try and keep it just for wees as it's hideous if it goes wrong and needs repairing if not.

Luckily our is in a bedroom so guests would only use the normal bathroom anyway.

Why install a toilet there in the first place, if it’s unable to function as a normal toilet?

GetOnBoardDeckers · 18/05/2026 16:25

Totally with you. When I first met my in-laws I was told of this rule, discreetly a few weeks in, by my now DW. Upstairs pooing, downstairs just wee.

Plenty of people, myself included, poo to a schedule. I very, very rarely need to poo at any time other than immediately after breakfast. Then once it's done, it's done and I can get on with the rest of the day, confident that I won't need a loo for anything other than a quick pee.

Do other people just poo at random times throughout the day then? How very inconvenient for them! What if they're nowhere near a loo when the urge arrives? What if they're in the middle of a meeting, or at the theatre, or out for a walk and so on?

Then...we find a toilet! Very rare you are nowhere near a toilet and if out for a long walk can hold it but wouldnt hold it if e.g. I was in a meeting. I would say I need a comfort break and go

Applesonthelawn · 18/05/2026 16:22

It's not that the macerator can't handle, it's the fact that you can't handle the fact that the macerator is handling it. So it sounds to me that you should try to let it go.
Is the fact that it's in the understairs cloakroom making it worse for you? It would for me, but perhaps that's my weirdness. It feels like it's in the middle of the house with no window. I think I wouldn't have put a loo there anyway.

helpme402 · 18/05/2026 16:21

what if you were to say the downstairs bathroom is reserved for your daughter only? then guests etc would only have the option to use the upstairs bathroom and no poop in the downstairs loo issue.

It's a normal body function and people's bodies don't run to a timetable normally when it comes to this. Unless you're Sheldon from Big Bang!

UNBU
Reading your 1st post, I did think you were a bit precious about your new toilet.
But reading your followups, I get it.
Yep get a little sign up, its emergency poops only.
Not worth the hassle, if the family get used to popping in it regularly, this will lead to more frequent blockages.
Stick up that sign, & congratulations on the new toilet.

margegunderson · 18/05/2026 16:11

Jesus Christ. Exactly what is the problem? I mean - move beyond your kneejerk reaction and properly think about it. Do you have some sort of OCD? Do you believe in cooties? Can’t bear the smell in the hall? This is totally mad. It’s a TOILET not a handbasin.

Northernladdette · 18/05/2026 15:47

That’s always been a rule in our house, so your family would know that. Not sure I’ve ever had a poo in someone else’s house, or had someone do one in mine 😣

Have you never stayed in someone else’s place or have someone stay in your house?

EmmaB1309 · 18/05/2026 16:08

Wishimaywishimight · 18/05/2026 15:50

Don't you ever go for a pee but then realise you could do with having a poo. You would need to put the brakes on, finish up then shuffle upstairs to finish the job. What a nuisance.

Haha this!

EmmaB1309 · 18/05/2026 16:06

Yabu. You can’t do this. Not to mention it being totally weird, you will cause embarrassment to any visitors using the upstairs loo because everyone will be able to tell they are going for a poo. Can you imagine? Poor visitor reading the sign, thinking ‘oops better go upstairs then’ and sheepishly making their way to the other toilet…..
Don’t install a toilet if you don’t want people using it. Or install a better one.

bethepeace · 17/05/2026 21:24

Are people really pooing at other people’s houses? I genuinely don’t think I’ve pooed at a friends house since I was a kid!!

Everyone is different. I go at a different time every day, not to a timetable.

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 21:33

I can’t envisage that my bowels will be that loose that I can’t make it up 1 set of stairs. If I’m ill with diarrhoea then I’m probably going to be upstairs anyway.

Then you are bloody lucky, @keepswimming38! I am disabled, and I have lymphocytic colitis, which causes me to have sudden diarrhoea, with almost no warning. There are times when I almost don’t make it to the downstairs looking, from the front room. If I had to climb the stairs, I definitely would not make it. I already restrict trips outside the house, for fear of not finding a loo in time - it is a horrible way to live, but it is my reality.

I am somewhat appalled at the thought of you making your mobility-restricted daughter struggle up the stairs if she needs a poo - that is really hard hearted.

LondonTipton99 · 18/05/2026 15:52

I'm very sorry for what your daughter has been through. But surely this has made you realise shit (excuse the pun!) like this just really doesn't matter? Like, really. It's a toilet. It's what it's for.

Hackedoffinoldage · 18/05/2026 15:51

Never heard anything so ridiculous. It’s a toilet!!!

JontyGentooey · 18/05/2026 15:47

I'd be way more concerned about the lack of a window than the macerator. Did you at least install an extractor fan?

This is weird and will make your guests feel weird and unwelcome.
