AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:46

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

To be honest, I only have one toilet, so it's not something I've ever really had to consider. However, if it really bothers you, by all means make a sign... How about

' If you're a super pooper
I don't wanna find you
Sitting on this loo.
If you need a number 2
Upstairs there is a room for you'

I'm here all night folks!

I can’t believe the number of posters that have deemed you unreasonable. We have a macerator downstairs and deter people from using it for a poo.
Even in our old house that wasn’t a macerator people knew not to do a poo in the downstairs toilet. It obviously did happen on occasion, normally children, but I can’t believe the number of people on here who think it’s an unreasonable request.
Downstairs toilets rarely have windows so what are all these guests doing afterwards. I couldn’t even imagine being in someone else’s house and going for a poo downstairs. (Except for age, disability related reasons).

I've never lived in a house that didn't have a window in a downstairs loo. If it doesn't have a window , it needs a good extractor fan.

Some downstairs toilets have windows? Unless they’ve literally been shoehorned in under the stairs 😬

Years ago in the house before this one we had a macerator in an en-suite that used to block constantly. We said never again but then this was the only option due to where it’s situated.

If it's a Saniflo, then it should be fine. Macerators have come a long way in recent years. Before I had mine installed, my friend said they were very noisy, but they really aren't. Mine just makes a noise that sounds like a little burp.

BitterTits · 18/05/2026 19:09

I'd be mortified if I had to go upstairs in your house because you'd know I was off for a poo.

Since I saw this thread I am still chuckling about the guest poo humiliation ritual up the stairs.
I think people would try to avoid being seen, or make up an excuse to slip out the room.
"I'm just going to help Trish in the kitchen..."
(Scurries upstairs to do a subtle poo)

My daughter recently got sepsis and it’s affected her mobility. She would use upstairs loo in morning to poop though.

What if she had an upset tummy during the day? Would you make her struggle upstairs?

141mum · 18/05/2026 19:07

Im on your side, my downstairs loo is not for poo

BooneyBeautiful · 18/05/2026 19:05

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Because it’s not a macerator.

Macerator toilets can easily cope with poo! They can cope with all bodily fluids, 1 or 2 ply toilet paper, and macerator cleaner. They just don't like bleach.

I think it fine to have that general rule for the people that live in the house and maybe close family that you ask to do the same if they are around frequently but any guest that comes to the house or a sign, just no. This naturally limits the amounts it would be used for poo anyway. For most people one of the purposes of a downstairs loo is so visitors don’t need to go upstairs.

Absolutely correct. Not an issue for us now as the kids go to bed at the same time as us, but when they were little I didn't want guests going upstairs, flushing the toilet, and waking them up

Tigerbalmshark · 17/05/2026 20:50

If you don’t want people to use it as a toilet, why are you actually installing it?

Genuine question - can’t it go anywhere else, and if not, is there any point in spending £10-15k in putting it in if you are going to be revolted by people using it?

For info, I had a macerator toilet installed in the cupboard under the stairs last year (all signed off by Building Control), and it only cost about £3K. Worth every penny!

pouletvous · 18/05/2026 18:56

Will you mention this rule each and every time someone visits your house?

loislovesstewie · 18/05/2026 18:56

@Papster ,please put a warning on next time! I'm crying with laughter! 🤣 🤣 🤣

Leavesandthings · 18/05/2026 18:55

Just make the no poo rule for family who live there, and not guests.

That would eliminate the vast, vast majority of the shits the loo will ever have to macerate.

Miranda65 · 18/05/2026 18:55

Don't be so ridiculous, OP. It's a lavatory - this is exactly what it's for.
Not to mention that your proposed request is incredibly inhospitable.

Papster · 18/05/2026 18:54

Leave a small knife in the downstairs bog and ask people to chop it up themselves . As in the song (tune, She’ll be coming round the mountains )

There's a shortage of good bogs in Mobile,
There's a shortage of good bogs in Mobile,
So they wait until it clogs,
Then they saw it off in logs
There’s a shortage of good bogs in Mobile.

RedToothBrush · 18/05/2026 18:48

You are ridiculous. How do you intend to police this?

Leafmealone50 · 18/05/2026 18:47

To avoid the embarrassing outing if a guest needs a poo, just make it a toilet only for use by your daughter and send everyone else upstairs 💩

Southlandssue · 18/05/2026 18:43

arghhelpme · 18/05/2026 18:40

Yabu. I went to stay at DP's grandparents house for the first time. I used the toilet downstairs before I got into the shower in the same room. DP got shitty with me, no pun intended because I done more than a wee in the toilet which turned out to be a macerator toilet, had never heard of one before. Didnt particularly want to use the upstairs bathroom which has standard not privacy glass windows with no blinds or curtains 🤷🏼‍♀️

What if her bowels don't operate to your schedue and she needs the toilet when she is downstairs

It’s not ‘like having a kitchen you can’t cook in’ is it ? Who has two kitchens ?

My SIL and BIL did, but that was because they had a "granny annexe". The second kitchen was bloody handy when there were 14 people for Christmas lunch. The veg team used the annexe kitchen.

It also had 5 bath/shower rooms: one in the annexe, a ground floor shower room, and upstairs had 2 bedrooms with en suites and a "family bathroom".

Justchillinhere · 18/05/2026 18:34

You just direct the person to the upstairs loo, tell everyone they mustn't say you have a secret one under the stairs, in all seriousness, I would not want to know it's there, if my number 1 was flowing and 2 decided to show I'd be mortified, would I try n hold on, run upstairs and hope no logs escaped, definitely not, it needs to be used for something else

itgetsthehoseagain · 18/05/2026 18:30

GinaWhoLikesADrink · 17/05/2026 21:12

Don't tell anyone it's a toilet. Pretend it's a cupboard. If anyone finds out, tell them it's your daughter's toilet, and they can go upstairs.

Oooh, that's good. That would work.
