AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

Select your toilet paper carefully.

Far more relevant is tactfully reinforcing that nothing other than the supplied toilet paper and bodily fluids go in the toilet. No fancy Kleenex, no wet wipes or wash let’s, no tampons or pads.

Amira83 · 17/05/2026 20:59

I didnt understand the reason why you don't want ppl to poo in there ? It will be flushed away afterwards

I think it would be better to tell guests just to only use the upstairs loo. I think it would be too weird to insist on what type of ablution goes where.

I agree with this. I think a sign makes it awkward. Imagine a friend is desperate then goes into this bathroom only to see the sign telling them not to poo.
They then have to run out of this toilet and go upstairs?! Obvious then to your household why they have done that (and anyone else who has seen the sign before) so everyone knows their toileting business.

Oh god puking 🤮. Definitely no puking!

Is the carpet preferable instead?

Growlybear83 · 17/05/2026 20:57

what is someone meant to do if they go for a wee and then realise that a poo is coming too? Should they quickly wipe and rush upstairs while they’re turtling?

Bristolandlazy · 17/05/2026 20:57

Making your guests do the walk of shame isn't very friendly.

😬 make her walk upstairs ( I know how that sounds)!

Don’t be ridiculous

TeaPot496 · 17/05/2026 20:56

Isn't a massive wad of tissue a bigger challenge to a macerator, than a poo?

pepinillo · 17/05/2026 20:55

Toilets are for pooing in.

Years ago in the house before this one we had a macerator in an en-suite that used to block constantly. We said never again but then this was the only option due to where it’s situated.

Macerators do that.

I wouldn't install one, to be honest. Especially if you're going to be anxious about it blocking. I think you either accept that it'll probably block often but decide that it's worth it for the convenience of a downstairs toilet, or don't get a downstairs toilet, if there's really no other option for ths space.

yabu
that's what toilets are for

and don't put in a macerator
proper pipes are possible and well worth it

And when she needs to poo in the afternoon?

You need a sign up for macerator there fine but can’t handle ANYTHING but pee poo and paper
no wipes or sanitary products

tbh a macerator can handle shit better than normal toilet it’s all wizzed up and pumped

My daughter recently got sepsis and it’s affected her mobility. She would use upstairs loo in morning to poop though.

And when she needs to poo in the afternoon?

Are you concerned it won’t work? What’s the issue with the macerator?

I would find it bizarre beyond belief that someone had installed an entire bathroom just for wees. A toilet that only does half the job is a bad choice for a bathroom.

I suspect it'll be fine handling more solid matter, though. That's what it's for!

LittlePetitePsychopath · 17/05/2026 20:53

No. It's a toilet. People who need the toilet will go to the nearest one. Nobody is going to go in, read that, and then run upstairs... for a start, they may as well wear a "I NEED A POO" banner.

People will wee, poo and puke in there. It's a toilet.

Throwaway65131 · 17/05/2026 20:53

Who is likely to be pooing in your downstairs loo that isn’t part of your household or a very close friend/family member anyway? Do you have a lot of guests you don’t speak to? You could put the sign there but it seems a bit strange. Surely unless the toilet absolutely can’t cope with number 2s without causing some major plumbing issue, then when guests ask to use the loo give them a choice of downstairs or upstairs loo … surely the majority of people wouldn’t choose to do solids in a toilet mere feet away from their hosts?

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:52

Tigerbalmshark · 17/05/2026 20:50

If you don’t want people to use it as a toilet, why are you actually installing it?

Genuine question - can’t it go anywhere else, and if not, is there any point in spending £10-15k in putting it in if you are going to be revolted by people using it?

You can keep some corks next to the front door to offer guests. Right next to the blue plastic shoe covers I assume you have.

PrehistoricGarbageTruck · 17/05/2026 20:52

What's the issue with pooing in it? One of our toilets is a macerator and we don't have any restrictions on using it. Never had a single problem with it either!

maybethisway · 17/05/2026 20:52

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Because it’s not a macerator.

Because it’s not a macerator.

Why have it installed if it’s not to be used?

PashaMinaMio · 17/05/2026 20:51

Your husband is right.
Stop being silly.
Your visitor(s) might be embarrassed having to say they’re “going upstairs”, nod nod, wink wink.
