AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

Oh, forgot to ask. Is "cloakroom" a euphemism for toilet? My first thought was Why The F are you friends shitting on the floor in your cloakroom?!

HatAndScarf33 · 17/05/2026 21:14

I have this rule! Upstairs bathroom has a window so smelly poos are easily aired! Downstairs cloakroom doesn’t have a window so smells linger. Rule is mainly for us (the family) as we’re here most of the time. Staying guests (extended family) are also informed of the rule. I’ve had zero pushback. Who wants the smell of poo wafting around the main living space!? Not me!

TokenGinger · 17/05/2026 21:13

I agree with you! We have a downstairs loo, which is just off the kitchen, and there’s a strict no poo rule in there. I just cannot be okay with poo so close to the room where we prepare food 😂

I know I am likely unreasonable, but it works for the four of us who live in the house.

Macerator toilets are awful and often clog if people do poops that are too big!

Put a proper toilet in so people can poo to their heart's content!

🤣

I can sometimes just need a wee and then once Ive started, my bowels decide to join in on the party too! What should I do then? Try and stop and waddle upstairs to use the other toilet 🙄🙄

Who the heck visits people and goes for a dump?
In my entire life I've never visited friends or family and had to snap one off.

Exactly this. Plus it would stink your downstairs out. I’m the same, go for a sh!te upstairs, downstairs is for peeing only in my house!

GinaWhoLikesADrink · 17/05/2026 21:12

Don't tell anyone it's a toilet. Pretend it's a cupboard. If anyone finds out, tell them it's your daughter's toilet, and they can go upstairs.

Get a grip.

I was going to say you were being unreasonable then I read that it was a macerator.

Those things block so easily that you may have a point!

Never had a problem with ours.

Its literally what the macerater is for.

BTW. We have one in our understairs loo. Had it for years and never blocked. Even with poo.

Alan Partridge tested the technology robustly with plenteous mashed-up Dundee cake and proclaimed it a great success.

Growingaseed · 17/05/2026 21:10

OP I don't think you are unreasonable. We have a macerator and don't use it for no 2's due to past blocks. A contractor came by did a no 2 blocked the macerator and it's cost us £500 to sort...

YBU:

  1. It's rude to dictate which toilet guests can use.
  2. You will embarrass guests who go upstairs as everyone will know why.
  3. Unless you are American or 3 years old, you should use poo, shit or crap rather than the very cringy "poop"

You are very very lucky. Unfortunately I have a medical condition which means when I need to poo, it can’t wait. Every extra minute is painful to hold it in. If I’m in someone’s house I’ll have to use their toilet.

It's a normal body function and people's bodies don't run to a timetable normally when it comes to this. Unless you're Sheldon from Big Bang!

I absolutely despair of some people’s attitude to poo. Who can poo. Where they can poo. When they can poo. Everyone does it. I don’t know if this thread is supposed to be semi lighthearted (I’m thinking not …) but I have a child with Crohn’s Disease. He’s in remission at the moment thanks to a biologic, but I fear for his future when the idea of a person emptying their bowel is either a hilarious joke or something to be ashamed/uptight about. Seriously, catch yourself on.

Chillax. It’s lighthearted as you said.

I’d put a sign up saying - warning macerator toilet - it’s noisy - you might want to poo upstairs.

PinkyFlamingo · 17/05/2026 21:04

What the hell do you think toilets are for? You have done strange issues that's for sure.

suki1964 · 17/05/2026 21:04

We are on a septic tank and when we have guests stay Im very open about only the three P;s in the loo but id never dream of saying to anyone - No Poo or Puke please

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 17/05/2026 21:03

A sign is fine, but you need something much more subtle and seemly. Like this one.

AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

😬 make her walk upstairs ( I know how that sounds)!

Do you?

You installed it to help her. The limitations on it sound... I don't even know how they sound. I'm perplexed.

Years ago in the house before this one we had a macerator in an en-suite that used to block constantly. We said never again but then this was the only option due to where it’s situated.

Did it not occur to you to enquire about their efficacy before you had it installed? Presumably they are not the same as they were ‘years ago’.

i agree with a PP it would be more reasonable to just not let visitors use it rather than police what they are doing in it.

Also the fact you’ve had it installed due to your daughters mobility issues but she’s not allowed to poo in it either makes me think you should have saved the money and got her a she-wee and a bottle. It all sounds utterly nuts.
