AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

This thread has been eye opening. Do people really sometimes go for a wee and then suddenly have to poo without warning? I always go about 30 mins after I wake up, like clockwork. The unpredictability must be annoying....anyway, just direct people upstairs when they ask op.

Not annoying for me, if I am using the toilet whatever comes out comes out. I don't plan when I poo but why would i need to?

And when she needs to poo in the afternoon?

Wouldn’t it be quite unusual to need to poo in the morning and the afternoon?

What the fuck is a macerator, and since when did the word poop become normalised?

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 17/05/2026 22:45

Yeah sorry it would be v unreasonable. People would likely feel self conscious about the fact they are 'announcing' they are going for a poo since they are using the upstairs one and sometimes I think I only need a wee but end up needing a poo - am I meant to hold it in and transfer toilets?? And since you are installing for your daughter who has mobility issues she needs to be able to use it at all times surely!

Following in from other posts - how about a little rhyme on the sign on the wall ??

please do not use this loo
if you need to do a poo.
careful if you do a wee :
toilet sheets - no more than three.
solids are just unacceptable
in this porcelain receptacle.

Or you could just leave it and let people just do what they need to do!

Excellent. 👌

I can’t believe people haven’t heard it being called a downstairs cloakroom before?!

Here’s a right move listing as an example!

AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?
BananaPeels · 17/05/2026 22:44

Surely you can as a family avoid it but accept the odd guest might. Seems the easiest solution.

BeRoseSloth · 17/05/2026 22:42

I can’t be the only person who goes for a wee only for things to get rather more involved !!

Franjipanl8r · 17/05/2026 22:41

You don’t need to worry about the odd guest poo. It’s guests who flush sanpro or wet wipes who are the biggest issue. £600 it cost to fix our macerator after someone flushed a tampon! I didn't think I’d need a sign for that - I provided a bin and bags but they didn’t use them!

shuggles · 17/05/2026 22:40

I have no doubt that OP does not make turds. That's something that only her guests do.

DontShoutInMyEarholeTracey · 17/05/2026 22:39

Oh FFS, don’t be so bloody ridiculous! I take it there’s a sink in the no shit bit of the house so people can wash their hands?

KilkennyCats · 17/05/2026 22:39

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:54

😬 make her walk upstairs ( I know how that sounds)!

This is utterly insane.

You had it installed for your daughter with mobility issues, but she’ll have to troop upstairs with the rest of them if she needs an inconveniently timed poo?
How do people live like this?

my ex’s parents had a loo that was in the utility room with a curtain. although the utility room had no door so any smells or noise from one room would waft into the other.

i always felt nervous using it. i was told by my then bf it was pee only in that one. fair enough. totally got it.

id be fine with a sign. id direct people to the upstairs loo “the downstairs loo is a noisy macerator for no1s only, for your comfort you may prefer to use the upstairs one, it’s quieter and the lights better for makeup too”

A curtain and no door?! Omg 🤣

Or the one at a nightclub. Drop off your turd and take a ticket.

If we're being literal, should it be a cloakroom, if no one wear cloaks this century?

BudgetBuster · 17/05/2026 22:31

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:52

My daughter recently got sepsis and it’s affected her mobility. She would use upstairs loo in morning to poop though.

Is she only allowed poo in the morning then?
This gets more bizarre

DrCoconut · 17/05/2026 22:28

Glad it's not just me that's a bit literal and interprets cloakroom as place to hang coats. Like the cloakroom at school.

Twooclockrock · 17/05/2026 22:28

Well the issue is that anyone that comes to your house is basically going to have to tell you if they are doing a poop in your toilet, as they will have to ask to go upstairs.
This is a really horrible experience for anyone, even a close friend to have to badically say ''I am going for a poo now'. Either by words or by the action of them going. upstairs.
Yoh could put a sig up saying ' please use the upstairs loo if you use a lot of toilet paper as the flush is not very good' or something like that. Not directly saying 'you must go upstairs to poo'.

DrCoconut · 17/05/2026 22:28

Tigerbalmshark · 17/05/2026 21:36

That was my first thought too! I imagined an under-stairs cupboard, and somebody shutting themselves in there and shitting all over the coats and shoes 🤣🤣🤣

AllBranGirl · 17/05/2026 21:56

A downstairs toilet you can only pee in? I know your sort!

😂

All Bran Girl. You won’t be able to use the loo as you’re probably very regular 🤔

RedRock41 · 17/05/2026 22:25

Wow 😮… yabvu

hahabahbag · 17/05/2026 22:24

Make sure you have a lidded bin and a sign saying don’t flush anything other than toilet paper. Two ply is better than 3 ply with them too (experience) it will cope fine with poo, just not half a rolls of thick toilet paper

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/05/2026 22:23

GuineaPigWig · 17/05/2026 20:52

You can keep some corks next to the front door to offer guests. Right next to the blue plastic shoe covers I assume you have.

😂😂

DrCoconut · 17/05/2026 22:23

MyGammyEye · 17/05/2026 22:16

Invite me to stay. I have some sort of mental block where I can only poo in my own home.

Holidays - are you having a nice time? No I'm painfully constipated!

My DS has bowels of steel and will withhold poo for as long as a week if away from home. It's not good for him and he knows it but just struggles with public/non familiar loos.

Kirbert2 · 17/05/2026 22:22

Why are you having one downstairs in the first place? Especially since you will force your daughter with mobility issues to use the upstairs one anyway if she needs a poo?

Sounds like a waste of money and a source of unnecessary stress.
