Anyone else suddenly put off a food after an unpleasant association?

A few years ago my friend had this weird thing where she saw a dead thing (mouse? bird?) in her garden covered in maggots and ever since then she can't bring herself to eat rice or orzo as it reminds her of the maggots. I thought this was a bit weird but a few weeks ago I was eating a curry that I had made and whilst eating a chewy mushroom my brain just screamed "snail!" I spat it out but could not eat any further mushrooms. I've not been able to eat one since. Has anyone else got the ick (can I use that expression here as it is about food and not a man?) with food they usually like? If so, have you managed to get over it and eat that food again?

I read a gross thing on quora digest while eating and egg and bacon burrito so now I can't. When I was pregnant with my daughter I made a gross yellow bean chicken dish which put me off Chinese 5 spice for many years

As a child I settled down to eat an orange. Peeled it all and then a maggot crawled out of the top. I do very occasionally eat an orange now but I'm highly suspicious of them. Maggoty orange experience was about fifty years ago 🙂

Apple tango , i drank a bottle when i was about 14 and started being sick with some kind of stomach bug a little later.

When I was pregnant 47 years ago we went out to lunch at a pub and I ordered a ham, cheese, onion and pineapple toasted sandwich. I was very sick afterwards (I did have very bad morning sickness). Since then I have been unable to eat ham and cheese together, or pineapple with gammon or hot. The individual items are fine... I can eat cheese and pineapple (cold), I can eat cheese and onion, I can eat ham and onion, but I can't eat them all combined.

I can’t stand the artificial apple smell for some cleaning products and scents. When pregnant, I had hyperemesis and spent a fair amount of time with my head down the loo. At the time we had an Apple scented loo thing down there and it was all I could smell.

Sausage and bean cassoulet 🤢 I was sick after eating it once about 30 years ago and even the thought of it takes me right back to throwing it all up. I had a bug, it was nothing to do with the food but I just can’t bring myself to eat it.
DP retches at the mention of cream of chicken soup! That was the food he was given if he was poorly as a child and just cant make himself eat it

When I was about 15 (1979) we were each asked to bring in a worm from our garden to dissect in biology. I pretended I couldn't find one because I couldn't bear the thought of it being killed. However, others were not deterred. The biology teacher put all the worms in a beaker and poured some liquid in to kill them. They all writhed around frantically. It was horrible and I have never forgotten it. After the lesson I went to the canteen for lunch and wriggly spaghetti was on the menu. The association was too much and to this day, I have never, ever, eaten spaghetti.

I had some Bertie Botts every flavour beans in about 2002 or 2003 and there was a carrot one. I threw up violently into my own pencil case in the back of my mums car. I already hated carrots but jelly beans made me boak for years afterwards.

Nothing wrong with some Escargot!

I used to eat rollmops when I was young. I really liked them (I know a lot here will be disgusted by this!). One day I ate one and presumably it wasnt quite right as I was vomiting heavily shortly after for 30m, then was fine after.

That was a long time ago, and to this day I cant even start to bring one to my mouth without my entire body reacting against the attempt.

Annoyingly I had just started eating a small chocolate mousse desert as this happened, and I couldn't eat that type of mousse ether for a very long time. I could eventually tolerate that type of chocolate mousse, but still don't really like it much.

I grew up in a dog rough area. I was about 6 and playing out. Went home for dinner and the little boy from next door was having a poo on their doorstep.
Dinner was that cheap horrible tinned ravioli.
Never ever again, even if it's posh!

nomas · 18/05/2026 03:40

I had some tuna from a tin of Rio Mare tuna and now I can’t eat tinned tuna at all, even though i had eaten the Rio Mare jars quite happily. I think the olive oil gave it a weird texture in the tin.

I have had 2 temporary picks that just lasted a few years and one permanent ick.

Temporary ick
Ham roll. Sat at my desk at lunch, heard the typist at the next desk go into great detail about her young son’s circumcision. Put me off ham .

Prawn cocktail. New to a company , first office Christmas meal. First course prawn cocktail. It was then that a colleague thought it appropriate to give the reason and detail of his big toe amputation.

Permanant ick. Can not eat a roll or sandwich if the filling is hot and has been buttered. Someone gave my a buttered roll with a beef burger in it. I was violently sick for an unrelated reason. Hospitalised for about a week.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 18/05/2026 03:01

I watched a nature documentary where I learned that seal milk is the consistency of mayonnaise, and didn't touch mayo for a good decade after that!

BauhausOfEliott · 18/05/2026 02:35

Onion bhajis. Thirty-odd years ago I was so ill with food poisoning at university that I was hospitalised, and an onion bhaji was the last thing I’d eaten.

It wasn’t even the onion bhaji that actually made me ill but I just cannot shake off the association with overwhelming nausea.

MysteryParcel · 18/05/2026 02:21

Sprite / 7UP / Lemonade - not food but I had the unfortunate experience of having picolax as prep before a colonoscopy years ago which had a nasty lemon / lime flavour and now I can’t have any lemon / lime flavoured drink as it instantly reminds me of it.

TeaDrinkings · 18/05/2026 01:52

Any rich fruit cake.
Had some Christmas cake at my cousin's home then fell off her pony. Subsequent concussion resulted in me throwing up violently.
Haven't touched any rich fruit cake or Christmas pudding since that day 45 years ago.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/05/2026 01:30

Gammon. Threw it back when pregnant and can't even look at it now.

Momtotwokids · 18/05/2026 00:51

Got sick on my birthday cake with whipped cream and strawberries in it after getting food poisoning from Chinese food the day before .

Thatcannotberight · 18/05/2026 00:47

Weetabix isn't nice on the way back up. I still can't eat it after severe morning, noon and night sickness with DS 2 who's now 14.
I also went completely off tea while pregnant and still can't stand the taste.

I once watched a cat give birth while I was eating a stuffed marrow. For about 3 years afterwards I couldn’t see a marrow or a courgette without retching, let alone eat one. I like them again now.

Wow that’s quite random!

CloseEncountersOfTheLoveKind · 18/05/2026 00:41

I can not eat a lychee.
Never had one, so I have no idea if I’d like the taste.
However, I’ve always seen them served in a small ball shape, and the thought of eyeballs just popped up in my head.
I can’t brave crunching down on an eyeball (lychee), as I’m sure I really would puke up 🤮

BashfulClam · 18/05/2026 00:32

Tinned macaron segments. I ate them and a few hours later I was down with norovirus. My mum had it a few days before. Seeing and smelling them in reverse put me off.

Whataflippincircus · 18/05/2026 00:26

My DH once took the top of a boiled egg and it was bad. He’s never eaten eggs since. This was in Spain from a supermarket called Eroski. I never shopped there again.

Fifthtimelucky · 18/05/2026 00:20

Not me, but one Christmas many years ago my (then primary age) daughter ate so many Lindor truffles that she was sick. She hasn’t eaten one since.

I consider that a great outcome. All the more for me, especially as my other daughter is now a vegan so doesn’t eat them either!

LoveheartBear · 18/05/2026 00:19

I distinctly remember being on a family holiday in Isle of Wight, and I was ill with a stomach bug (I think I was 7 or 8 yrs old).

I had not long had an episode, and my sister was stood near me eating liquorice comforts. I couldn’t eat liquorice for years after that (but I love it know 😁!).
