So sick of mouth ulcers

giddykipper3 · 17/05/2026 16:15

I get one maybe once a month or every other month. Sometimes mild, sometimes severe like the one I’ve got now. It’s not just the localised pain it’s the headache, fatigue and raised glands - my body is clearly fighting it and that takes its toll. I’ve tried everything - only use sensodyne toothpaste, use anti bac mouthwash, all the topical treatments you can buy. I had a full blood count done 6 months ago for something else and they all came back normal.

My dentist referred me to the hospital last year and they were very dismissive. Basically just said some people are susceptible to them and I should work on my stress levels 🙄

When I don’t have one I kind of forget how bad they are. But then I get a nasty one like I have on my inside cheek at the moment and I feel rotten for a week and think I can’t carry on with this. It’s been happening on/off for years.

Hi! Please read about Behçet’s disease. It’s rare but I was diagnosed years ago and mouth ulcers were and still are one of my main symptoms x

I switched to Corsodyl toothpaste and now I only get them if i accidentally bite my gum

When I was young I had crooked teeth and think that agrravated my gums too

Very same as me. Had them for years and then someone suggested it could be foaming chemicals in toothpaste.... it was.

Florabeebaby · 26/07/2026 21:12

Random but ask for a coeliac blood test. My dad suffered from constant mouth ulcers and was diagnosed coeliac in his early 60's.

I get awful mouth ulcers too. Switching to SLS free toothpaste, enough sleep, keeping ferritin and b12 levels up, regulating cycles with hormonal contraception and treat them soluble betamethasone tablets or a steroid inhaler sprayed directly on them when I do get them have all helped. But it does make you feel so run down.

I used to suffer from mouth ulcers too. They're awful and so so so sore so you completely have my sympathies.
Anbesol liquid (not the gel) was the only thing that almost made them bare able but was still in a lot of pain.

Doctors fobbed me off for years!! Used to just say that it was potentially hormonal and I was clearly susceptible to them

However, 2 years ago I got a private allergy and intolerance test done (for other reasons) it came back that I have quite a lot of food allergies and intolerance. I originally cut them all out, but then gradually introduced them one at a time to say the affects.

Found out that it was tomatoes causing them, I occasionally eat tomatoes in some dishes in really small quantities but even a bolognese now means I get an ulcer. Have not had them at all since I cut them out.

It might be worth trying. Just a thought x

Smol toothpaste is SLS free.

The SLS in some toothpastes can give people mouth ulcers. Might be worth chucking a multivitamin into the mix as well. It is really annoying though, I used to sometimes get 10-15 at a time during my worst phases. I took to painting them directly with medicated mouthwash on the end of a cotton bud.

Yep, some sensodyne has sls (sodium lauryl sulphate) - in fact annoyingly I just bought a tube and won't be able to use it, as I know I will get a sore mouth if I do!

I used to get major apthous ulcers, easily get to a cm across and last for several weeks at a time. Horrendous pain that no-one can understand these are not regular ulcers. You used to be able to get a steroid ointment from your dentist but they stopped making it. Only thing that worked for me until I found out I had dairy, yeast and benzoates allergies and gave all that up. Only used to be able to use McLeans toothpaste but can use some colgate versions nowadays due to the benzoates. I only get the odd one now from trauma like you say but not always. I could add a picture but nobody wants to see that! You can buy Orabase ointment online and crush up a tiny bit of steroid pill if you have any lying around, but I didn't say that.

The stuff that was discontinued was called Adcortyl in Orabase, and it was amazing. The active ingredients were triamcinolone actinide.

you can still buy it in other countries. Not in Europe to be knowledge, but definitely in Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong over the counter. It was discontinued due to the cost, no other reason. Really worth buying some if you are ever in one of those regions.

another alternative is a steroid tablet dissolved as a mouthwash called Betametasone. Worth asking your dentist about this

goldielou · 26/07/2026 19:35

I used to get them all the time until I was diagnosed with hashimotos/under active thyroid. Now I’m on medication I very rarely get them. May be worth investigating.

giddykipper3 · 26/07/2026 17:33

I didn’t. However I’ve had a few dental issues recently and have started using corsadyl mouthwash (well a cheaper supermarket alternative) to keep my mouth clean. Im tentatively optimistic that I haven’t had any significant ulcers since this and the ones I have had have cleared up quickly. The only issue is you’re not supposed to use it for more than 1-2 weeks due to teeth staining but to be honest I’d take that over mouth ulcers.

Im starting to think I maybe just had a bacteria-y mouth which is quite disgusting 🤢

Just don't drink tannin containing things either side of using it for an hour. It reacts with the tannins which stains teeth.

Jopo12 · 26/07/2026 17:44

Try a fluoride free toothpaste for a couple of months to see if it makes a difference.
My preferred one is Kingfisher brand, my ulcers disappeared entirely when I switched to that. I now use normal toothpaste and the ulcers haven't returned

Westpoint · 26/07/2026 17:41

Gargle Hydrogen Peroxide instead to de-bride your mouth (google for the correct dilution).

Get on the Lysine tablets asap.

Speak to your GP about Acycolvir tablets. A high dose can be used to treat the acute attack or a lower dose that you take daily as a preventative.

Did you get tested for coeliac @giddykipper3?

Yes me too in my teens and early 20s. My diet was a bit rubbish back then to be fair.

I think my diet was pretty standard back then but 5 a day wasn’t a thing back.

CoverIt · 02/06/2026 15:27

I had some tests recently and because they were looking to rule out Lupus, one of the questions I was asked was whether I got mouth ulcers.
Have you ever had tests for that, or has your GP ever suggested Lupus? It’s not one of the main symptoms and lots of other causes could be responsible, but if all else fails might be worth looking into.

I will pick up some zinc and vitamin c today. Also have the Lysine tablets arriving too. I only use SLS free toothpaste. I have had a recent full blood test for something unrelated that didn’t flag up any deficiencies. I just need to find something that makes life more bearable when they happen or ideally reduces them altogether.

I can point you to some paste stuff i've always found great for when I get them.

Only problem is that don't sell it in the UK, any more, but there is a seller on ebay that does.

Message me on here if you would like a link,

SelfSeededAsh · 02/06/2026 14:53

Do you eat crusty bread/sourdough toast with a very sharp crust? My mouth gets all cut up when I eat that and the cuts turn into ulcers.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 02/06/2026 13:12

Do you get them in similar places each time? I suffered for years, every few weeks for about 10 years. they were huge to the point I could barely talk when I had them. I was low on B12 but even fixing that didn’t fix them. I had a lot of dental work done, 4 teeth removed and braces and I haven’t had a single ulcer since. The only thing I can think of was it was pressure points in my mouth.

Corsodyl mouthwash helps but water it down as it can discolour your teeth if you use it regularly. What I would do when I had absolutely had enough and I’m not sure I recommend it- pure vodka straight on the ulcer. It’s absolute agony but afterwards it’s completely numb and gives you a bit of temporary relief.

NandorDeLaurentis · 02/06/2026 13:05

Go gluten free and use tepe SLS free toothpaste.

I was like you, now (even postpartum) theyre largely gone, and even when I do get them, they're nothing like they used to be. I couldn't eat, talk, function when I was having a flare up.

MrsShawnHatosy · 02/06/2026 13:05

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/06/2026 12:16

I used to get them a lot in my teens then they disappeared. I’d get blood tests but look at supplements.
