Would you give me the replacement chips?

Im with a group of mum friends at a food court. We all go off to different kiosks. Order our food. We find an available table.

I order from a Thai cuisine, a noodle dish and some chips for the little one.

I pick up the food, put toddler in highchair, put the chips infront of her. I’m about to take my first serving of noodles and baby kicks the chips all over the floor.

The chips cost £5. One of the mums says that it’s been less than 5 mins and they didn’t touch the chips, I should be able to ask for a replacement.

So I go to the kiosk, politely explain that I was just here and the baby annoyingly dropped all the chips. I show them the picture (we are sitting on the other end of the food court).

They say no. But I plead a little bit - I do have a soft voice so I’m being nice. Then they go on and on about how every mum will be asking for freebies. I should pay for another one. And I should go to another one of their stores who would provide me free chips.

Turns out she was also the manager.

I worked in waitressing many years ago, and honestly, we would have just given a portion of chips. Id be hesitant if it was the whole meal - but a couple of chips for a baby?

Was I being unreasonable?

I’m glad you are one of the few with this opinion.

I just asked. and honestly, I have seen so much worse - there are worse things I could have done. And as I said, if it was my own food that was knocked over, I would t have asked. but £5 for some chips…

But yes, society seems to hate mothers. We should all Apprently just be quiet and focus on our kids not stepping out of line.

Id be interested if the reaction would had been different if it had been a dad - who knows? We tend to allow men to be more “bold”.

Hilarious that your take on people calling out your cheeky fuckery is that society hates mothers! Your entitlement is unbelievable - from assuming you should have free food through asking to see the manager to complaining to head office about someone on a low income refusing to give you food (rudely or not) to get a £5 refund.

do you vote Tory or reform?

This has to be one of the most bizarre threads I have ever read! 21 pages about a £5 plate of chips which the OP's child dropped on the floor and her subsequent complaint and demand for a refund is utterly ridiculous!

Interestingly, nobody seems to have queried why she was feeding a 2-year old a plate of chips anyway. Hardly very nourishing! And what is a 'food court'?

Loads of people have had a pop at her about the chips being for a baby. Confused

Blabladebla · 17/05/2026 13:16

So...your child dropped the chips and you want them replaced?
A staff member didn't drop them?

If your child dropped your TV off the stand at home..would Curry's be expected to pay for a new one?

What world are you and the other mum who suggested it living in?

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 17/05/2026 12:59

£5 for a portion of chips for a baby - I think you were diddled!
to expect them to replace the chips is a bit CF - they could do it as a kind gesture but not feel obliged to. I split a drink all over my dinner at ‘Spoons - had to eat a vodka and coke soaked chicken and chips as they refused to replace it (my friend went and asked, against my wishes - I didn’t expect them to replace the meal, or the drink).

TheCrazyCatWoman · 17/05/2026 12:47

I’m sure I’m only going to echo most other people here, but are you for real? Entitled and deluded and a customer they will be only too happy to lose. You will probably ignore everything that has been written but you should perhaps take a moment to consider that none of us know you so our opinions are completely unbiased and they’re not good.

wherearethesnacks · 17/05/2026 12:39

How embarrassing that your friends saw you acting like such a CF, trying to get someone else to pay for your child's lunch and having a strop reporting them afterwards

I can't fathom why you would think they'd want to give you a freebie. They didn't drop the chips. Why should they carry the loss?

I carnt believe your child requires feeding every hour. At 2 that seems concerning and I would be getting that checked at the doctor's. At a few months old my baby cluster fed every hour for a few weeks during a growth spurt. If a two year old was doing this it's a cause for concern

Edited

The child must be the size of a house at this stage.

MyNameIsBatty · 17/05/2026 10:25

To be fair a fiver for chips is standard round here (Oxford) unless you're in a hungry horse/chain pub. Even the local chippy is a fiver although that is for enough chips for two very generous portions. I clearly need to move somewhere cheaper!
And yes you were unreasonable to ask...annoying but you have to suck it up and buy more or just throw a few noodles their way instead!

Dreamingofdisneypt2 · 17/05/2026 10:07

Yes you are unreasonable here. Completely your fault so not their responsibility to replace. Your baby/toddler/child was clearly not in the mood for chips so chucked them in future if they are a baby then just put a few on their tray that way if they are thrown/kicked etc you’ve still got most of them. TBH when they were babies they just got a little off my plate until they were old enough for me to warrant paying for their own meal.

Houseofdrums · 16/05/2026 21:47

No - she was rude.

She most likely matched your energy!

Houseofdrums · 16/05/2026 15:48

Why does it hurt you so much? I understand that a majority of people think that I was unreasonable for asking

BUT

most would say that they would replace the chips anyways out of good will - but I shouldn’t have been “bold” enough to have asked for the replacement.

I personally don’t see a difference. They’ve lost a customer anyway - if they even care.

This post has been interesting.

I did what I did. I don’t live with regrets. I speak out when I need to. It’s always served me.

Thanks for all your comments. I’m home cooking today - so if I spill my food or baby knocks it all over - it’s on me.

I think you are a very spoilt and entitled individual. Your replies just strengthen my thought.
Full of self importance.....

Tshirtking · 17/05/2026 09:51

You say it takes a village. A fast food counter isn't part of your village.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/05/2026 09:16

I’m going against the grain. I’d have given you an extra chip. My DC spilled their drink over the plate one time, the staff removed the meal, brought a fresh one no charge, it was a restaurant so probably different.

It’s all a bit delusional isn’t it. Seeing herself as ‘bold’ and ‘vocal’, her young looks a ‘gift and a curse’. The entitlement of not only requesting free food, but being sure to do it with a gentle voice, but then complaining to head office.

Yes. And the manager only became ‘rude’ and the complaint to HQ and the full refund only happened in the OP’s second post, after initial replies didn’t admire her fiery independence of spirit.

Tshirtking · 17/05/2026 09:06

Houseofdrums · 16/05/2026 15:34

It takes a village…

oh Yh, no it doesn’t here.

Thats why depression and anxiety is so high.

What has depression and anxiety got to do with feeding your child chips one at a time? Truely baffled.

@Houseofdrums are you an influencer?
because the entitlement is strong in your post, and the voice thing, wtaf?
This doesn’t sound like someone grounded in reality

Starzinsky · 17/05/2026 09:00

This is one of those posts where you think this has to be a joke surely. To have asked for free chips for your lack of parenting was cheeky, to argue the point with the manager was entitled and deluded. To make a complaint to head office about the manager was morally wrong and completely unreasonable.

Coolasacucumber26 · 17/05/2026 08:25

Houseofdrums · 16/05/2026 04:48

No because it’s worth so much more.

I would t have asked if my £18 noodles dropped. As I’m an adult.

I guess I was driven by the thought of a hungry baby. So I accept fault. And I know it’s my responsibility to feed my child.

I guess the consensus is that I shouldn’t have asked - I get it, some people can’t stand boldness. The LO always gets freebies when we go to certain restaurants - but the difference is I never ask. So I get why everyone is on the “you are unreasonable” side.

"I guess the consensus is that I shouldn’t have asked - I get it, some people can’t stand boldness."

You guess wrong and mistake your boldness for rudeness. But I can see from your replies its not getting through to you.

All context aside, you have asked a business for a free portion of chips. Not only that, when you were told no, which is within the restaurants rights, you were so entitled you emailed and complained.

Yes it takes a village to raise a child. Not by expecting free food.

I just dont agree with your rationale that you think you were bold. Its fine to ask questions, but accepting being told no as an answer takes more.

You then emailed to complain, which they have refunded you. So you get what you want anyway and think you deserved a freebie because you have a baby. I bet the waitress/manager likely lwasnt rude, but you used this excuse to get your money.

Even if she was rude, it was likely because you went expecting a free portion of food! Which you cant see as unreasonable, but think is bold !! They are a business. Chain or not, a loss is a loss. You wouldnt expect a free bag of crisps from the supermarket if yours was dropped on the floor after you paid for them....this is no different!

Expecting free food is never ok, no matter how big or small! Or bold, its rude! I just cant understand your reasoning.

The restaurant has not lost anything in losing a customer like you.

Also to add, if they seen the incident, yes they probably would have acted differently, but they didnt. Again, you are never entitled to free food so its rude to expect this. Honestly, its likely pointless me writing this, but I hope it gets through to you from the votes and high volume of replies that what you did was rude and entitled.

Get some manners, accept being told no and pay for the food you take. Also top tip keep the food you bought out of arms/legs reach when getting baby ready to eat. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/05/2026 08:21

YABU. For next time, go in with the assumption that you were paying and they might actually feel more inclined to waive the charge. It it reasonable to ask you to pay though. I spilled a whole cup of coffee outside a coffee shop. I went in to get another one, proffered my card and they insisted on not charging,

Flamingojune · 17/05/2026 08:20

This thread reminds me if the one where op was bemoaning her brother asking for lift money to air port. Both ops were/are very chippy (scuse pun)

everynamewastaken · 17/05/2026 08:03

I would have gone and ordered the chips and said I was just here but the baby kicked them all over the floor. So annoyed! Then they might have offered them...but I would never ask.

BUT for everyone saying they shouldn't, when I worked for Tesco as a teenager (so many years ago) they said that if someone dropped something in the car park we should replace it free of charge. I remember being surprised but it was literally part of the training. It might have changed but I think their reasoning was customer service is important.

And to add, I don’t think I present myself badly - I wear quite grand-ish clothing. But I know that is a trend. I think it’s just my face and simple bun hairstyle.

Im 5”4?

I don’t know… it’s a gift and a curse.

OH yeah your one of those.....Ewwww again

Candy24 · 17/05/2026 07:06

OP your beyond unlikeable. Like every update makes me just dislike you more and more. The entitlement is just EWW
