So I've just watched a video where shes addressing someone writing an article about her sister and how she used to work as a peads nurse but now makes money online like Stacey because shes better off and get more time with her family.

How is this the way the world works?
Im not disregarding why influencers do it becaise I would if I could being a nurse myself but this is so wrong that this is the best way of getting money these days.

Its the same with ladbaby etc why the hell are all these people getting crazy money for all this stuff.

Sorry just had to rant whilst on my break on night shift on my extra shift that ive taken 🙃

I'm just not sure it's the case that grads are no longer interested in finance roles. Looking at it from the other end, it seems like the opposite - economics/ finance degrees are super popular and these students are applying for literally hundreds of internships and grad roles and often not even receiving a standard rejection. Also, the roles aren't there in the same numbers due to automation of the work that fresh grads would have done.

That’s what I think too. My son has been applying for tons of jobs over the past year - charity, civil service, marketing, research (not finance admittedly). He’s got to the last two a couple of times but not got the job. There are hundreds of people applying for entry level jobs (you can see the profile of the people applying via the online recruitment platforms) and they often have a lot of experience together with degrees etc.

He can’t even get unpaid internships which he has also been applying for.

He’s intelligent and personable with a good degree but has not got work experience which is the main down side. But you’d think he’d have got something by now given that he’s not looking for the big bucks and we live in London so you’d think there would be loads of opportunities.

Don't get me started on those who get paid for cleaning their house. I've always used a certain cleaning product but now boycott them because their IG channel has been completely taken over by "influencers" doing stupid dances and messing about in shops which stock the product.

Also on IG you have to sit through videos of "influencers" opening freebie parcels (this is when I boycotted) while normal and loyal, paying customers like me receive emails every time we order "so sorry for the delay - we can't get your parcel out due to high demand". Then the "influencer" will post a video of them cleaning their sink like they're the first ones to think of the concept.

And I love dogs more than anyone - but the amount of people who have dog accounts and they write as if they're the dog. It's really bizarre. A few have said recently they've been able to give up work just for putting photos of their dog on IG!

LoyalMember · 15/05/2026 08:44

Stacey Soloman's an empty vessel. She probably thinks she needs a Passport to shop in Iceland.

AgentJohnson · 15/05/2026 08:40

I assume she has the right to decide for herself how she earns a living. I'm not sure why it's anyone else's business.

This with bells on.

OP, why have you making out that someone else’s choices is a commentary on your choices? Stacey Soloman’s sister doesn’t know you and contrary to your beliefs, you don’t know her either. Your ‘annoyance’ about this says more about you then it does about the choices of someone you do not know.

Jeez!

Friendshipproooblem · 15/05/2026 08:38

I don’t blame her for quitting a high stress shift work job - that would include working nights - to earn more money online at home.

If we want it to stop being how the world works, we some how need to kick our addiction to social media. But that’s impossible because it’s designed that way! Big tech needs to stop it being so addictive but they won’t. All v depressing, sure. But I don’t blame her for taking the opportunity to make more money and leave a physically and mentally demanding, poorly paid job?!

Feis123 · 15/05/2026 08:34

It is all well and good until you start thinking 'what am I doing with my life? What is the purpose of my life?'. If either of these two questions do not lead in your mind to a discussion of 'how can I be helping other people in what I do' then there is no point. You are also on the wrong site for this - here really important questions do not get asked often, or they do but are soon derailed to practicalities, rarely do we look beyond the surface.

If you have eyes and a heart and can't see how your job is infinitely better on every level than the embarrassment that are all influences put together, then maybe you burnt out?

Mamma2637 · 15/05/2026 08:33

I was talking to DH about this recently - that the best minds in the world aren’t using their brains to solve the world’s problems but instead using them to figure out how to generate more clicks. It’s where the money is clearly and it is happening at all levels. Depressing.

QuintadosMalvados · 15/05/2026 08:29

I also think that - apart from mental health nursing-the fact that most nurses are women is a factor.
Would they put up with such shit if they were men?
Like could you imagine if most nurses were male would they put up with the NMC dictate how they should behave (obviously actual criminal behaviour is different) outside of work?

I can't say for sure but I'd doubt it.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/05/2026 08:27

No idea who watches these "influencers" but I'm probably not the target market. But yes it's wrong and not good role models for younger people who think they can just make easy money.

Forty85 · 15/05/2026 08:26

Being a nurse is a difficult job, physically, mentally and emotionally. Burn outs really high in the profession and I can imagine it would be exceptionally hard as a paediatric nurse. Anyone who wouldn't leave a job where they could make more money in another and spend more time with their family and have a better work life balance would be a bit mental. Yes it's great to be a nurse, but like any job, you need to put your own wellbeing first.

I'm not a huge fan of influencers and the grotesque over consumption of stuff we don't need but that's why I choose not to follow them. Anyone can choose to do the same who doesn't agree with it.

SquirrelSoShiny · 15/05/2026 08:22

29novname · 15/05/2026 04:57

I think the issue is way bigger and more serious than ‘exciting careers’.

Young people can no longer be sure if they start a career that it will turn into something that will buy them a house / lifestyle (quality of life) that previous generations have taken for granted.

So instead of choosing a path where they grind out an existence which is all graft and minimal reward, they instead prioritise quality of life. Why should they be martyrs for nothing?

I can’t blame them for that. Unless we as a society get to grips with why this is happening, we’re all going to suffer the consequences. If they feel they have more opportunity online, then again, we need to ask why.

I am teaching my children to trade, because I no longer believe - even if they become lawyers or doctors - that this will guarantee them a secure future. I want them to have skills they can fall back on independently of the world of work.

Can you teach me too? Grin

Alright, I’ll be the judgmental bitch…

these people can only make the money they do because pig ignorant idiots hang on their every pig ignorant word. Idiot people are placing huge amounts of ‘value’ on people who gain their ‘value’ from having xxxx numbers of idiot followers. What particular circle of hell is that? Why does anyone need to be influenced and told what to do or buy? What happened to good old fashioned using your own brain to make your own mind up about something?

In reference to a post above, why would anyone want to sit through a video of some barely literate woman making a rice pudding or cutting her fringe?

honestly, I truly fear for humanity.

While ever people are lapping up Stacey Solomon’s every word, they’re not likely to be looking at politics and working out how best to
vote so nurses get paid what they’re actually worth to society.

breaking news - the beckhams have just become billionaires. I fucking despair.

(Stops typing and runs for cover)

Completely agree. There are also ‘influencers’ who repeatedly tidy their house up. Aka reset. 🥱

MyBrightPeer · 15/05/2026 08:20

Cheese55 · 15/05/2026 07:02

Or she's better at influencing than nursing?

Well nursing pay isn’t based on performance, it’s not something where working harder = more money.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 15/05/2026 08:16

Is that any different from people watching a lot of nonsense on TV and presenters we don't like making a living from that?

Exactly. If you took all the vacuous shit off tv, there'd be very little left!

I don’t blame them at all. I’ve been looking at moving out of my profession as the MH effects just aren’t worth it.

And, tbh, I don’t care about the national economy, that’s out of my hands - I care about not feeling suicidal because of my job and my family keeping their wife and mother.

Our mortgage is paid off, no debts left. So taking that into account a minimum wage job will leave me with the same net income as before from my professional role

Go for it if you can afford to.

Too often women are expected to sacrifice themselves for some perceived greater good.
Put you and your family first.
There are nurses who love the job and I'm afraid to say the sense of martyrhood it gives them so let them do it.
So I mean this in a good way nobody will suffer if you leave.
My MIL was like this. Didn't have to work at all as my FIL had made a ton of money.
I appreciate that she wanted money of her own but she could have picked something easier as a job.
She became a nursing sister. Used to love being a martyr. Complain endlessly about it and I'd be like why are you doing it?
The answer was she just thought it morally good to suffer.

NoGarlic · 15/05/2026 08:06

Influencers are a weird mix of celebrity and marketing. I'd be a shit celebrity, but I was great at marketing/advertising and used to get paid very well for a job that largely involved going to lovely restaurants with interesting people and getting drunk at glamorous parties. I didn't make millions - some did - but had a very nice life. I enjoyed the 'work' part of the job, as well.

If you can shift product for corporations, you can make good money. This is just another marketing channel. It probably won't last all that long: I spend very little time watching influencers, but have become aware of the increasing amount of AI-generated 'people' pushing content. Once they figure out how to catch the public's hearts & minds with digital influencers, the opportunity for human ones will start to close.

People will come up with new ways to have a good time while selling stuff, though!

I know a few teachers who have left the education system and privately tutor full time.

Their hours might not be the standard 9-5, but they generally work half the hours they did as a class teacher, have matched (and in one case significantly exceeded) their class teacher salary. There is more flexibility in how they teach, what they teach and they can genuinely meet the needs of the child.

In essence, they are teaching again.

Teaching has become more 'corporate' in its approach and expectations, which doesn't really fit the role especially when the education landscape has changed so significantly.

Unfortunately, the private tutor market has become somewhat saturated so I don't know how this will play out in the future but, then again, with more parents realising the education system isn't working for their children anymore, maybe the need will continue to increase.

it has become such a flex to quit the rat race, even if it makes you economically worse off

I'm in a fb group for teachers considering leaving the profession and there are teachers leaving the profession and taking £20-£40k pay cuts (with standard AL) to work in lower paid (sometimes min wage) roles. That says a lot about what people are prioritising.

It's not a 'flex' people just can't sustain it any longer. And many people are deciding that there are more important things in life than just making money.

I don’t blame them at all. I’ve been looking at moving out of my profession as the MH effects just aren’t worth it.

And, tbh, I don’t care about the national economy, that’s out of my hands - I care about not feeling suicidal because of my job and my family keeping their wife and mother.

QuintadosMalvados · 15/05/2026 07:45

Those nights working as a care assistant on nights were an absolute feat of endurance.
I recall coming home after the second night and still not being able to sleep. Crying with despair and exhaustion.

OK, OK I'll concede that I wasn't a nurse but we worked the same hours.

Yes babies can be difficult but a nurse is expected to do this for 40 years! Unless she/he gets into management.

F*ing good luck to anybody who escapes that.

The nurse I worked with had been a nurse for 20 years, she still said she couldn't get used to nights.

Oh yes and you're supposed to be on your best behaviour when off duty, too.

I think some people are misunderstanding you OP.
It’s just demoralising as a nurse that the value placed on the job is so little compared to influencers, footballers, bankers etc. I think that’s what you were saying? If so, I completely agree.

Why?

Influencers, along with other content creators, performers and entertainers tend to work long, hard hours and most earn very modestly. The fact that it looks easy doesn’t mean that it is - the looking easy is part of the job.
A small percentage hit the big time and make big money for as long as they can maintain a career - that is the nature of life as a creator/performer in the creative industries and arts.

Nurses join a career path which can be pursued to a very senior and well paid level, along with much more job security and actual benefits. Few of the “talents” in the media industries have benefits let alone pensions. Few content creators earn as much in a year as a graduate nurse with a couple of years’ experience under their belt. Few have the prospects of the nursing career path.

MulberryFresser · 15/05/2026 02:07

Any form of shift work is difficult with caring responsibilities- I don’t blame this lady for choosing a more flexible path. She can always return to nursing later.

Totally agree . Paediatric nursing is extremely tough and the working conditions are only getting worse . It’s easy to judge someone when you haven’t been in their shoes

TheHillIsMine · 15/05/2026 07:36

Blodyneighbour · 15/05/2026 02:17

If she is saying that her friends and sisters etc can get more money being influences online without taking the time to care for people, ???what don't you understand about that ?

Edited

That's not what she's saying at all 🙄

ArtyFartyCrafts · 15/05/2026 07:30

And also, if people are stupid enough to follow someone who films themselves doing something mundane and tedious like mopping a floor then they can’t really moan about that person taking advantage of that to earn some money.

It’s always been this way though with nursing. People would happily pay more for a painter to paint their front room than for the nurse who cared for them in ICU/hospice/hospital ward etc.

Re SS and her sister, Mrs Hinch, and the other “content creators” (hate that term) - it’s so not my thing and I find them very fake - nearly every post is an ad/affiliate link disguised as “family life”, “self care” etc but if people are stupid enough to get sucked in and buy all their crap, that’s on them.

I’ve said on here just recently - why the hell would you want a duvet cover with SS’s dog on it or Mrs Hinch’s alpaca, or do up your house the same as a thousand others with Mrs Hinch’s home bargains shite???

Its a scourge of the modern era I suppose 🤷‍♀️
