So I've just watched a video where shes addressing someone writing an article about her sister and how she used to work as a peads nurse but now makes money online like Stacey because shes better off and get more time with her family.

How is this the way the world works?
Im not disregarding why influencers do it becaise I would if I could being a nurse myself but this is so wrong that this is the best way of getting money these days.

Its the same with ladbaby etc why the hell are all these people getting crazy money for all this stuff.

Sorry just had to rant whilst on my break on night shift on my extra shift that ive taken 🙃

Maybe they think life is too short to do soul destroying boring jobs. I have a "proper job" but if someone can make up their own career, be entrepreneurial and make money their own way instead of going for a standard path then good luck to them. I often say to DDs that the most interesting jobs or careers are ones that you create yourself. What will happen to "normal jobs" is that many will be done by AI, or won't exist in the future, but hopefully other jobs will that we haven't even thought of at the moment.

Edited

I couldn’t agree more.

AI can’t come soon enough in my industry, as far as I’m concerned. It will give me the kick up the backside I need to do something else with my life.

I find this interesting because I lecture and at our uni career fairs are always bustling, students are desperate for placements / internships, our uni offers internal internships which students love doing, we have external partners who offer them too. I definitely haven’t found a cohort yet who want to graduate and become Stacey Solomon, so there’s hope…

As for Stacey, I’ve never really understood quite how/why she’s as popular as she is. She was a bit goofy on the X Factor 16 years ago I think? But a good singer which surprised people. Now she’s selling products, has a TV series, millions of followers etc but her content is tedious as anything. I haven’t looked for some time, admittedly but I’ll never forget watching her peg individual packets of crisps up in a cupboard and I thought wow, what a life she has… Joe Swash has done well out of the marriage too tbf, Mickaaayy from Eastenders wouldn’t be known now without her.

We of course still get interest. But nowhere near the amount that we used to, and much less from high calibre graduates. Long gone are the days of receiving hundreds of applications from top universities and having our pick of la crème de la crème.

To be clear, I don’t blame young people. I dream of quitting the rat race literally every day. I am unfortunately trapped (expat on a visa…) so can’t, but… one day!

I wonder what will happen to “normal” jobs when so many people are chasing exciting careers in social media and/or trying to generate passive income through investments.

I work in Finance and we’re getting nowhere near the number of applicants for junior roles that we did 10-15 years ago. I go to recruitment fairs at universities and I just don’t see the same kind of hunger for internships that my cohort had in the late 2000s/early 2010s.

Then there’s all the people permanently leaving Finance in their late 20s or 30s - it has become such a flex to quit the rat race, even if it makes you economically worse off. Having a ‘I can take it or leave it’ attitude to one’s 9-5 is rather in vogue right now.

Good! There’s more to life than work. Of course we still need healthcare workers, hospitality, cleaners, public services, transport, teachers and all other jobs that keep society running and in an ideal world they’d pay a lot more. But people seeing through the scam that is capitalism is a good thing imo. I’ve had that attitude since my early 20s and I’m nearly 40 now, I was quite out of step with the millennial generation.

Laurmolonlabe · 15/05/2026 11:36

I have no idea why people find her engaging- she is so transperant she may as well be made out of glass- she also in nohas no skills in the things she is trying to teach- talentless and greedy, just exploiting people. Don't watch anything she is in , then in a few years time she will just be an unpleasant memory.

ThatPeachQuail · 15/05/2026 11:33

If she can make more money online then she'd be a fool not to.

The point is she's only able to because she's Stacey sister.

Before Youtube and Tiktok you needed a combination of talent and good luck to become 'famous'. Now you can make videos from your kitchen talking about nothing and become famous and make a lot of money. But the overwhelming majority of people doing that don't make a penny but it's become part of societies dreams and aspirations now and suggested as a career.

Which makes people even disgruntled and angry at life because 'that woman does exactly the same as me but i'm ignored online'.

We used to have unrealistic aspirations of being famous models, singers or actresses to make the big bucks but that took some talent and work and effort or just 'being discovered' whereas none of that is required now for fame and money so it seems more realistic to aspire to. But the facts remain it's still unlikely to happen but seems more in reach. Ans makes people more angry when it isn't happening for them.

And 'influencers' are contributing to the brain rot in society. Where people get applauded for cleaning their house or doing their weekly shop. Or for having multiple children that they exploit online.

outerspacepotato · 15/05/2026 11:29

She left nursing for a job with better hours and money and working conditions.

Nursing has never been an easy job. She worked in peds, which can be especially emotionally exhausting. When I was working for the first couple decades, it was unusual to see nurses working into their 50s, much less their 60s. They burnt out or retired because the demands of the job were too much and management was unsympathetic at best. Now you see it more because times are harder.

Nothing wrong with her switching careers.

BlackRowan · 15/05/2026 11:24

Influencers are essentially part of entertainment industry. How is it different from footballers or Hollywood actors being paid a lot more than a nurse?

Chipsahoy · 15/05/2026 11:14

Her sister’s “rant” is worth a watch. I found her to be articulate and clearly very intelligent. I think she stuck up for herself very well and was very impressed by her.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 11:13

Sartre · 15/05/2026 07:07

Ha, have any of us tried though? I’m not sure I’d want to sit filming myself pegging crisps up in a cupboard. I mean, good for her in ways, I know she had a tough life prior to the X Factor and now she can give her DC a wonderful life. The content just baffles me though, same with Mrs Hinch if she’s still around. It may just be me but I don’t want to watch people mopping.

For some reason, I LOVE watching cleaning videos. I don't like cleaning, but I like watching it. The dirtier it was to begin with the better and I'm obviously not alone because there are so many of them.

Great. So the answers to my other questions?? I assume you pay enough to live in the location you require without inheritance or family support?

And have enough jobs for everyone?

Edited

What on earth does inheritance or family support have to do with anything? How many people have that? I never did or will.
And yes, I pay on average 10% above the market rate for all my employees. That’s how you get the good ones! That and treating them well.
And, no, of course I don’t have enough jobs for “everyone” but I’m not a bloody unicorn! Whilst there are many shit employers, there are also many like me, who do give a shit, who do pay people well, who profit share and who know full well they would be nowhere without the people they employ.

latetothefisting · 15/05/2026 11:11

OonaStubbs · 15/05/2026 06:21

Teens have always grown up with dreams of going to Hollywood and becoming a movie star etc, or a music star, model etc. Most of them grow up and settle down into proper jobs.

Exactly. If anything at least influencing is a bit more meritocratic- so many singers/actors/models are nepobabys whereas anyone with a camera can do content creation. I know its ironic given we're talking about stacey's sister riding her coattails but stacey herself doesnt come from a wealthy family, most cc come from normal backgrounds.

Lots of the cc I follow are comedians which used to be quite a male dominated field - personally to me it seems like quite a good thing if more women of all ages can get into it without having to do the whole comedy circuit of travelling the UK and getting constant abuse from pissheads (Im sure they get trolls online but at least its not face to face).

The only thing I dont get about influencers/content creators is how we havent reached peak capacity yet, there seem to be so many!

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 11:10

Donnersons · 15/05/2026 07:03

For now, maybe. But I very highly doubt there’s any longevity in any of this for 99% of influencers and content creators. There’s an always going to be someone coming right up behind you with an “act” that’s more popular then before you know it, you’re at the bottom of the pile.

I mean, take a look at the endless number of minor celebs who have tried to use SM to increase their wealth. These are people who already have a platform/status and even they can’t make it work long term. Look how many of them end up on their arses, up to their eyeballs in debt and picking up a plethora or mental health or substance abuse issues. It’s not a pretty picture.

I’d also imagine many of the people you mention are having nowhere near as much success as they’d like you to think.

There are influencers who started out just doing that and have become successful.
I agree that it's precarious, not just because someone else can become more popular but also even small changes to a platform's algorithm can change how traffic is sent to a particular influencer and they have to change how they reach people.

I’m not sure someone quitting a nursing job because they can make more money online shows anything about what is wrong with the world. That’s such an extreme take on someone taking an opportunity that will benefit them. Is it because she was a nurse or would you have the same take if she worked checkouts in ASDA? I’m not sure if you are annoyed that she left her job because you think she should remain morally or if you just don’t like the fact she is making more money and fast? Either way there is a shitload of things wrong with the world today but SS’s sister making some videos isn’t one of them. It doesn’t even come close to being a ‘what’s wrong with the world’ people have been grabbing opportunities for literally centuries to make money, sure it differs now but minimal labour and happy work/life balance sounds like a dream to the majority, if it isn’t putting your life online it is often something else, not sure why you would care.

Having known many nurses and spoken to many people about the subject, I'd say it's the sort of job that people think others should do but, funnily enough, not them personally.
Funny that.

I worked for a short time as a care assistant. Yes it was not nursing but it did involve working nights and it was hard enough for me to upend my body clock.
I couldn't sleep in the day. I took orders from the staff nurse and she didn't sleep well either so she had it even harder than me as she had overall responsibility.

I don't judge any nurse for saying sod it.

I think there's snobbery here at play, too.
A kind of dislike of ordinary people doing it for themselves but I bet there's no problem with nepo babies earning a ton of money for presenting dross on TV.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 11:04

"Most people don’t go into nursing because the pay is crap and the job is horrendous hours and conditions. It’s not unreasonable to not want to do that with your life."

I don't think the pay is crap.
I wouldn't want the hours and conditions or the responsibility/blame when things go wrong.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 11:02

Cheese55 · 15/05/2026 06:20

Judgemental much?

Very, very much, but she also knows a lot about them for someone who has so much disdain!

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 11:01

""Good luck to them", but it is hardly a worthwhile life "

Why isn't it any less worthwhile than so many other jobs?

Gwenhwyfar · 15/05/2026 10:59

"Also - you could do it, there is literally nothing stopping anyone creating videos and posting them online, you just need enough drive and motivation to put in the hard graft it takes to build an online audience (and plenty of people do it alongside full time jobs and caring duties)."

As you say, it helps to have a famous sister. Also, I think there's an element of luck. Some people make it on YouTube etc. and for others it will only every be a side hobby.

Lotsofsnacks · 15/05/2026 10:56

Only a small amount of influencers earn enough to to do that full time. Most others online have to do it around their normal job.

Jemma is lucky that her sister is well known and also has 6 million insta followers. Jemma is known to all these followers as features a
lot on Stacey’s posts. So she had the privilege of gaining loads of followers on the back of that.

I know many slogging their guts out on shift work would bite someone’s hand off, if they could instead have the cushier, well paid life of an influencer if it was handed to them on a plate.

I BLOODY KNEW that would come up! And actually, yes, I have also taken on two women in similar circumstances but that was 2-3 yrs ago now, so they are well on their way. AND I employ women with young children who need flexibility for childcare (most on £60k +) and yes I also employ older people, one of my key staff retrained at 45, she has been with me for 7 years and is 62 next month. Why wouldn’t I employ any of these people? They are all brilliant.

Great. So the answers to my other questions?? I assume you pay enough to live in the location you require without inheritance or family support?

Oh give over! She doesn't owe anybody anything. I trained as a nurse and now work in a creative line of work.

That’s not the point, you’re damned right nurses don’t owe anyone anything. The problem is the creation of a society where so many assume they do and can talk to them like shit while paying them nothing and restricting their rights to strike and protest. There are not enough ‘creative’ jobs to go round to cover the workforce of people who need to work to live, thanks to the depredations of rich elites for centuries. Nor are creative jobs likely to be immune to modern computing i.e. AI.

Noideawhatthetimeis · 15/05/2026 10:51

WaryCrow · 15/05/2026 10:29

“He”.

Employed many young women lately on these conditions - or indeed older women who have to retrain due to motherhood and their old profession being killed off?

Whats the job spec, how can I apply, and how can I beat the rush from the hundreds of other nursing assistants in my hospital Ali e who would also love to try?

Everyone I know is scrabbling around desperately trying to find something that will work as computers take over. Unfortunately it is highly doubtful that internet channels will work for any woman who does not want to sell sex essentially, via youth and botoxed looks.

I BLOODY KNEW that would come up! And actually, yes, I have also taken on two women in similar circumstances but that was 2-3 yrs ago now, so they are well on their way. BauhausOfEliott · 15/05/2026 10:37

What, exactly, is the problem with someone a) not wanting to continue with a nursing career if it’s no longer for them and b) finding an alternative way to make money?

I believe Stacey’s sister had a small business for a few years which she recently closed. Being an influencer is also a business. It’s not easy and it takes work. It requires a hell of a lot of tech skill, marketing knowledge, understanding of analytics and a lot of creativity. It’s no different from any other freelance comms business in that respect.

Would people be ranting and kicking off if she was a freelance marketing manager? Because basically that is what influencing is.

WaryCrow · 15/05/2026 10:31

It is the job of government to make society work, and that includes making it worthwhile to do the jobs that society actually needs. As pps have said we need nurses, and midwives, rather more than “influencers” - or footballers. And the fact that the influencers can bring in so much money that they pay more tax - assuming they do pay it - is precisely the problem being complained about.

Life is cheap and unvalued.
