AIBU to ask if you’d like to have your own bedroom?

Inspired by some comments on the bathroom thread to ask this.

Recently my DH and I moved into separate bedrooms due to his snoring, and we both love it! We feel well rested and enjoy each having our own space.

If you are in a relationship, would you want your own bedroom if you had the space?

YABU - No, I prefer to share
YANBU - Yes, I’d love to have my own room

Yes. Separate bedrooms have saved my marriage.

We now book 2 bedroom apartments for holidays too.

OneShyQuail · 14/05/2026 19:35

I love sleeping next to my DP. I love feeling the weight of his arm over me and I love waking up next to him in the morning, he has this instinct where hes still half asleep but reaches over to me and pulls me in close and kisses my head before weve even woken up properly 🥹

Pinkflamingo10 · 14/05/2026 19:06

We’re had our own rooms for years ! I’d never go back to the snores, the tossing and turning etc etc. if we’re away and stay in the same bed in a hotel I miss my private quiet bedroom!

Beware the loss of the quiet end of day chats and hugs.

We still fit those in, either on the sofa or on one or the other’s bed.

FlatErica · 14/05/2026 19:04

I have my own bedroom. It’s a 2-bed flat.

hby9628 · 14/05/2026 19:03

I would absolutely love my own room. It’s the dream!

socks1107 · 14/05/2026 19:02

Yes!! Cannot wait till one of my daughters moves out and I can claim the space

weareallcats · 14/05/2026 19:01

We share a bed but dh keeps all his stuff in a separate room and I have exclusive use of the en suite. I think it is me that is most annoying - open windows and reading in bed, a fan in the summer.

AliTheMinx · 14/05/2026 18:55

We have separate bedrooms and it's WONDERFUL!

Ah no I like sleeping together. He whispers I love you in this middle of the night, it's the best. I was alone till I met him, nearly 40.

However, I have always wanted a bedroom which just contains a bed, nothing else - ideally at the top of a ladder like Heidi.

So the dream would be our loft bed-only room then two separate rooms to store our stuff and maybe a beanbag or armchair. I wouldn't have to see his mess then and would have a space that's all mine.

I think this would be perfect, literally a bed-room (with a fuck off super king which we already have and no way would I go back) and adjoining rooms for clothes and stuff.

I do have my own little reading room in our house which I love and is the nicest room in the house because it always smells nice and has no clutter and is painted deep green and lined with bookshelves and nobody but the dog (when he’s clean) is allowed in

but god I would love it if my bedroom wasn’t also DH’s floordrobe

Marble10 · 14/05/2026 18:18

had our own rooms for about 8-9 years now (I’m 50). Best thing we ever done.

Wallywonker72 · 14/05/2026 17:36

I mean ideally you are both asleep for 90% of the time you are in a bedroom, right? So what’s the point of having your own? Much better to have my own daytime room.

Wallywonker72 · 14/05/2026 17:34

I don’t think so, quite happy with a massive bed and DH there but plenty of space. He’s stopped snoring since losing lots of weight, and doesn’t take up much room.

I’d love my own study though so that I could write, nap, grow plants and craft in peace.

We accidentally ended up with separate rooms for 2 weeks when one of us was contagious. It was a light bulb moment. Now we have separate rooms - it’s bliss. Mine is smaller, but he works in his so has a desk set up.

We are so opposite: I like it cool, not too much duvet, fairy lights, plants, books everywhere, deep colours. His is white, no plants, big light (ugh), hot! And now we get to ‘visit’ each others rooms like we’re dating again 😂

Edited

Your room sounds like DH's and your DH's room sounds like mine (except we both have books) - but I definitely agree that "visiting" someone's room has an unexpected frisson that sharing a room doesn't.

AgnesMcDoo · 14/05/2026 16:49

We’ve had our own rooms for years and are very happy that way.

love it

We were going round a pretty National Trust type house once and as the guide showed us into this pretty, light filled room over looking the rose garden with a sofa , a chaise longue, a neat desk, a table with two chairs and a bed, he said ‘ and this is Lady Xs boudoir ‘. There was an audible sigh from the female visitors in the group and a distinct feeling of previously unrecognised boudoir want. The rest of the house was nice enough but, oh, I wanted that room.

CallingKathleen · 14/05/2026 15:57

Nope. We’ve had temporary separate bedrooms a couple of times and DH used to work away so we’ve slept apart and we’re always happy to be back together.

neverbeenskiing · 14/05/2026 15:51

I wouldn't like it. On the odd occasion DH goes away for work I miss him being next to me and sleep terribly.

I have my own room and love it. DH wasn’t happy about it and sulked for weeks (he snores loud enough to waken the dead) but he’s now used to it. Our sex life hasn’t suffered. I occasionally miss snuggling up to him then we go on holiday and share a bed and I remember why I fought for my own room!!

Mainei · 14/05/2026 15:02

I would like my own room to myself in my house, but I wouldn't use it as a bedroom - I'd have my computer and creative things in there, a place where I can set up creative projects and leave them set up without having to share the space with anyone or worry that it looks messy. I wouldn't use up valuable space on another bed! I had my own flat for years before we lived together and I miss having that space for my own things.

I like sharing a bed with DH. I like being close to him though the night, pillow talk, able falling asleep together after sex and waking up next to him.

No, I love sharing with DP, but I would like separate bathrooms!

A few people have mentioned separate bathrooms, and that’s something I’ve never felt the need for. Maybe I need to acquire a more impressive array of toiletries
