I’m in my 20’s, mum is in her 60’s.

I’ve asked her if she wants to go on a girls trip at the end of the year. 4 nights in a city in Europe (we’ve not chosen yet).

Would you do this? I don’t know if It seems a little odd to do or if it’s totally normal.

Perfectly normal, I'm early forties and have been doing the Jet2 city breaks around Europe for the last 4 years with my DM, who is in her sixties. Means I get to go somewhere that the rest of my family aren't bothered about. Technically I could go alone, but we enjoy hanging out & exploring together!

Littlepiggietoes · 14/05/2026 18:24

I think it sounds lovely. I don’t have that relationship with my Mum, I wish I did!

To be honest I don’t want to go anymore because how tragic is it that I have to go alone because even my own mum doesn’t want to spend time with me? I’ve spent most of the evening crying because it’s just made me feel really crap about myself

Oh I’m sorry to hear you feel like that hugs to you but maybe your Mum is a bit less adventurous than you thought. Sometimes when people get older they lose their bottle for doing things out of their comfort zone while others embrace life.
Tell her how you feel.
if you do go on your own check out things like get your guide and stay somewhere cool with a bar where you can chat not an Airbnb. My best tip is do a chefs tour as people who like food are always fun. X

We’re really close. I’m just not sure if we’re in that stage where I should be going and doing it alone (totally happy to travel alone!), but I think it would be lovely and she seems quite keen

Last year had a fortnight in Orlando when my daughter was 21 and 10 days in Cambodia when she was 22 - more than normal as her relationship was getting serious and knew she would be spending future holidays with him
Had a great time and she has said her and her partner would love to go on holiday with me in the future.
To be fair there were some times when we would split up and do different things for a morning or afternoon so not in each others pockets all the time

Myself and my 22 yr old Dd went on safari for my 65th birthday last year, we had a lovely trip, just magical

blametheparents · 14/05/2026 18:04

I’ve been to Berlin and Amsterdam on city breaks with my 21 year old daughter. This year we’re off to Glasgow for the Commonwealth games.
She’s great to be with and we have a fab time.

I would go with my daughter. She is 23 and I'm 79.

Stoicandhappy · 14/05/2026 16:43

Would you go away by yourself? I do that sometimes and have a great time.

Chocolate23 · 14/05/2026 16:27

I am 41 and a lone parent of a 15 year old. For the last 12 years we have done away several times a year with my Mum who is in her 50's and single.

I tried holidaying with friends they constantly let me down. My Mum doesn't.

I chose where we go she pays her share and turns up. My Mum has a really stressful job and tells me she loves that she can just relax and not plan. We have had some great experiences.

I don't think it's weird. Go for it.

thereare4lights · 14/05/2026 16:08

I'm off to Malta with my 22 year old and 19 year old. I think we're all looking forward to it!

Aco8171 · 14/05/2026 16:05

So lovely and normal! Make precious memories with your mum, I love my holidays with my mum x

tootyflooty · 14/05/2026 15:47

100% normal. I love to do stuff just me and my daughter, she is now 28 and married, and I am 60. I took her to New York as a 21st birthday/ graduation treat, we had the best time, my husband took her twin brother to Italy to watch a football match. We also holiday with all our adult children and their partners. We have always done this and they are very keen to have holidays together. I will never not want to do these things, It is lovely you have this relationship with your mum. My own mum died when I was 8 so having a close relationship with both my sons and daughter, and now my grandson is just wonderful

CarbootJunction · 14/05/2026 15:46

I go on city breaks with my adult daughter. At other times, she goes away with friends who have more stamina for endless shopping.

Chamallo · 14/05/2026 15:38

Definitely go alone! I did a fair bit of solo traveling at your age and it really helped me to work out who I was and what I wanted to do, out of my family’s shadow. It can be scary and feel lonely/awkward at times but it’s also really liberating and thrilling to do whatever you want and try to stroke up conversations with strangers.

If you want a bit more structure to help meet people traveling, I really enjoyed volunteering at music festivals (did Glastonbury and IoW with oxfam) or you could sign up to a week long language course or some other workshop. Painting?

zingally · 14/05/2026 15:25

I've been on girls trips with my mum since my dad died in 2017.

2018 we went to Switzerland.
2019 Italy (Naples area)
2023 Wales
2024 Italy (Italian lakes area)
2025 USA (east coast)

This September we're going to Austria.

We get on well together, and always have a nice time. Mum is 71 now, those our upcoming Austria trip is a little more "old person coach trip" than previous ones, but that's fine!

Ponoka7 · 14/05/2026 13:39

Miranda65 · 13/05/2026 17:05

I would have loathed a holiday with my mother with every fibre of my being, so I never did it.
I guess it's fine, if you get on well, but it would worry me a bit that a 20-something would want to go away with an oldie of my age.... there must be more fun or interesting things that a young person could do?

Not every 20 something wants to hook up, do drugs, get blathered on every holiday. Did you stop liking interesting things and having fun once your children became adults? Theatre, Halloween events, siteseeing etc is something both me and my DD are interested in, we've just been on a theatre break. She also does holidays with friends. Why does being different ages, stop us from doing fun and interesting things together?
@wanderlustdiaries I think that you need to talk this out with your Mum. I'm my DDs childcare and understand how we can feel stretched, but you need her reassurance that this isn't because she doesn't want to spend time with you, she just might feel that she can't spare the time away. The DD I went on a theatre break with is the single, childfree one. I'm conscious that she has less of me. I certainly don't love her any less, but I can't be all things to all people, which used to be expected of women.

Scarlettpixie · 14/05/2026 13:06

I am 53 and go away with my 19 yo son. We like a city break. We are really close and have a great time. Long may it continue! He goes away without me too.

Chilly80 · 14/05/2026 13:04

I wish I had done this with my mum before she past away

YourAmusedOpalBird · 14/05/2026 12:26

I travelled the world with my mum as an adult. Big overseas trips, cruises, weekends away. I worked in travel and was lucky enough to take her on some amazing luxury trips for free. Did this well into my 30s. Occasionally people would ask us how we knew each other - mum thought it was hilarious. Maybe she was a rich lesbian and I was her toy girl 😂 She died suddenly 18 months ago and I would give anything for another holiday. Just go

Womanofcustard · 14/05/2026 10:11

Yes often go on holiday and day trips with adult daughter.

I think you should calmly tell her how her comments have made you feel. That she’d rather spend time with her grandkids than you for 4 measly days is a really unkind thing to say to your daughter. Hopefully she’s got a little more justification like being out of her budget to spend that sort of money wo your dad is reasonable. But the fact she said it in such a blunt and uncaring way is upsetting

MrsBrett20 · 14/05/2026 09:18

I’ve done it with my mum loads of times! We went to Egypt when I was 22. Went to Cyprus the following year. Just the two of us. We’ve had some lovely times together

Macinae · 14/05/2026 08:22

My mother and I have been abroad together twice just the two of us. We're very close, basically best friends, love eachothers company so yes absolutely. Never thought for a second it was odd.

ALJT · 14/05/2026 08:09

Seen the update :( go solo travelling. Italy, Spain, france. Get some wine tasting in. Go see the culture. Xx

Ineffable23 · 14/05/2026 07:08

I've done some solo travelling and had a lovely time. Is there anywhere you were particularly thinking of? Maybe you could tell us a bit about what you like and we could suggest a few places? I can see it might not seem like a tempting option today but I reckon you should still go.
