I’m in my 20’s, mum is in her 60’s.

I’ve asked her if she wants to go on a girls trip at the end of the year. 4 nights in a city in Europe (we’ve not chosen yet).

Would you do this? I don’t know if It seems a little odd to do or if it’s totally normal.

Absolutely! I went to Egypt last year with my 18-year-old daughter, I’m 55. We had a fantastic time!

jamimmi · 16/05/2026 23:47

Normal in our house, I've done a city breaknwith my daighter at least once a year for the past 4, shes 19 now and we are pa ning another. Favourite so far Amsterdam!

TaterTots68 · 16/05/2026 22:40

I'm late 50s, DD is late 20s - yes, I most definitely would. I guess it depends on the relationship though

Destiny33 · 16/05/2026 21:09

It is her loss honestly, and I’m sorry. I am so grateful for any time with my child. I had so many holidays with my mum. We had a such fun and I am so grateful looking back as she passed 3 years ago.

i haven’t gone on an adult holiday with my son yet but spend so much time together.

Didimag48 · 16/05/2026 20:51

Funny story here. My younger sister and I went on holiday with our mother to Jersey. Older sister wisely refused.
Mind you we were both in our 40s, Mum in her late 70s. At the breakfast table she was contiuously criticising us
Me _ you shouldn[t have got divorced and lose that nice house, among other snide remarks.
Younger sister - you are really too fat. You should eat less, etc.
The ginger haired guy at the next table went scarlet trying to suppress giggles! Every day for a week! NEVER AGAIN, thankfully :-)

Rhaenys · 16/05/2026 18:52

I would, but DM thinks it weird. I wasn’t allowed to go on holiday with her after 16.

She’s said although she’d like to she’d rather not because she doesn’t want to travel without my dad.

Stings a bit because they’re both fully able adults with no health needs really, but I guess that’s her reasoning. It was worth a shot though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Posted before I had RTFT. Sorry that this was your mum's response. That must have been a disappointment.
I don't understand why she couldn't have left your dad for a few days. I'm sure he would have coped without her and it would have been a nice break for the 2 of you.

JoeyJava · 16/05/2026 01:32

I'm not a daughter, nor do I have one.

However, for what it's worth: I've always loved going on holidays with my Mam - we genuinely enjoy the same stuff, doing the same stuff on holiday. I've never had a holiday with anyone else - not my peer group, and I've never seen the appeal in those stereotypical "lads' holidays".

I've been housebound due to a chronic health condition I've had for 11 years, and honestly the one thing that has kept me going all this time is the hope of being able to go away again.

She has been saying for a few years now that "it'll be her last"... Unless I'm able to go with her.

If you both want to go with each other, do it. No question.

cariadlet · 16/05/2026 01:22

I'm in my late 50s. I went on holiday with my mum last year and am going on holiday with my young adult daughter this summer.

Dd has just come back from a few days in Ibiza with one of her friends - it looked like my idea of hell from the photos and videos but she loved it - and has also done a couple of solo city breaks so is equally happy to go away on her own or with friends of her own age.

I think it's a lovely thing to do.

SexyFrenchDepression · 15/05/2026 23:33

My mum and I have done this often, seems totally normal to me.

lucyloo25 · 15/05/2026 23:20

yes in fact i am going with my daughter soon, she is in her 20;s

StolenTeapots · 15/05/2026 22:59

Ffs at least read the ops updates. So sorry op all these replies must make you feel crap

Robogob · 15/05/2026 21:43

Yes I’d love it.

Donsyb · 15/05/2026 21:43

Very normal. I took my mum to Paris for a long weekend when I was in my 20s and she was early 60s

YourWinter · 15/05/2026 21:32

My DDs are mid-late 30s, I’m 70 this year. The three of us went to Ibiza for a few days 15 years ago, it was very nice but really we are all very different and I’m not the leader when it comes to planning. We said we’d do it every year or so but never did again, not because there’s anything weird about it (it’s a really lovely idea) but I’m not one for people-watching in statement shades and a drink in my hand!

I hope you both have a wonderful time!

ETA my late mother and my sister had countless holidays together, often with BIL and one or both of his parents, and my mother loved it, they took her all over Europe and to the USA!

CheapFoodShits · 15/05/2026 20:47

I go away with my mum every other year! I'm 41, she's 65. Totally normal! We're off to Krakow for the third time this year, we've done Budapest and have already booked a cruise for 2028.

Do it, OP! Have a lovely time together.

Shezza71 · 15/05/2026 20:41

Currently in Montenegro with my 2 daughters who are 25 and 28, I’m 54. Last year we went to Budapest and the year before, Iceland. Always have a great time.

Lidlisthebusiness · 15/05/2026 20:40

I lost my Mum last year, and the holidays we had just the two of us, are some of my most treasured memories. Never stop asking her to go away with you, there's no age that would make it inappropriate!

Auroragirl · 15/05/2026 16:12

Totally normal to me. I went on hol every year with my mum until 2 years ago. Mum died last month at 90 . I have brilliant memories.
I'm happily married too. My husband also used to come he co loved it

IclimbedSnowdon · 15/05/2026 14:29

I've been away with my daughter many times, city breaks and beach holidays. We always have a great time together, earlier this year we visited Prague.

ItsOkItsDarkChocolate · 15/05/2026 13:22

@wanderlustdiaries

I’m so sorry that was her response.

Many mum’s would have been thrilled to do that with their daughter, and do.

Can’t not go without husband/dad? Non-sense and unhealthy overall. Is dad controlling? (Or is she?)

Would rather see the grandchildren. Well, she can do that too at other times. Maybe because she lives with you?

It’s ok to feel this sting. I think it is shining a light on your mum and how she is. Certainly give that some reflection time. However, do try to reflect and learn from it. Turn it into something constructive rather than destructive. This reflects on her and her issues, not necessarily you and yours.

It sounds like there is a lot there to unpack. Have you considered therapy? How is your mood and esteem generally?

Being able and willing to travel solo is amazing and a great life skill. Embrace that. Some of my best times have been when I’ve not had to consider someone else’s opinions and preferences! 😂

ElizaJ74 · 15/05/2026 12:59

I do a week in the Carribean with my daughter every year.
It's weird you think it's weird to go on holiday with her

Tuesdayschild50 · 15/05/2026 12:42

Its lovely to have a relationship like this ❤️

Fiddy1964 · 15/05/2026 11:43

My youngest adult son is my fav travel buddy. He is 22, I'm 62. We have just come back from Japan a few weeks ago.
I have also been on holiday with my 2 older sons at different times.
I'm currently on holiday in Turkey ( solo ) and bumped into a few mother and daughters who are on holiday together.

teenagedirtbag1990 · 15/05/2026 11:37

Sounds amazing!!! Spending time with mum!
