How to offer to pay for Disney

coulditbeme2323 · 13/05/2026 09:22

Long story short we went to Disney couple of years ago - kids wanted to go back so will be going for two weeks in October half term.

Sister's kids are desperate to go, but as a family it's out of their budget. We have a great relationship with sister and BIL, but don't want to offend them (well him I know sister would be delighted)

How do we go about offering, I was thinking probably speak with her first?

If your level of spending is completely unaffordable for them I would think how you could scale down a bit. People would call me weird but I was in your sister’s situation with my own sister and I was uncomfortable with some things she suggested. I can’t explain but some things we just don’t do as a family (or do differently) because they are expensive e.g we don’t do takeaways - we cook. Or we limit what we buy to DD. When parenting styles are very different it might lead to tantrums and problems with kids. I wouldn’t go on holiday with my sister, I can’t even do shopping trips with her as we have very different approaches to money. So I would carefully think about all aspects of this potential trip in advance.

You could pose it less like you're offering because they can't afford it and more that you're offering because you really want to go and the dc would love their cousins to come so would they join you and you will pay for everything

We pay for trips for others often and the usual things I’d recommend is, being clear on expectations for what you are offering.

“We are planning this and we would love for you to join us, we will pay for x, y, z for us and all of you. We really want to get everyone together, let us know by x if you can come.”

I do it all the time because I like to plan experiences and not once has anyone ever complained.

We are in a similar situation although we are the ones who are being treated. My brother spoke with me & he knew how much I would love to take my 2 kids & he offered to treat us next year & pay for us to go. My husband was a bit uncomfortable at first about it as he feels like he should be the one who pays for his family to do things but he knew it was a chance of a lifetime for our kids so he has agreed & is happy to go. Happy to see the update & it’s getting booked. Such a lovely thing to do.

I totally appreciate where OP is coming from and what a lovely gesture.
However, I can totally understand why BIL may feel uncomfortable with it.

I think the poster who said frame it as our kids are desperate to have their cousins join them (which is true) is onto something.

Yes and ramp up the “we got an amazing deal on accommodation” etc. I like the idea of it being this year’s Xmas pressie too

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 13/05/2026 20:16

I am sure they will be thrilled, I think just saying that you'd love to have them join you, the kids would love their cousins to play with and having them there would make you/DH really happy/complete the holiday. They're basically then doing you a favour for attending!! My parents often treat us to a holiday as they've downsized and have the cash in the bank - I've never once thought "we don't need your charity" I've only ever gone "amazing, thanks guys". Dh is the same even though they are his inlaws and he is the bread winner - he just thinks it's a nice thing for them to do. I am sure SiL/brother will be the same. If they honestly get offended then they're the ones being highly unreasonable.
I'd also very really clear (e.g. the package includes accommodation, flights, park tickets and Disney dining plan and Disney transport so not many extras needed, are you guys happy if we each pay for dinners and souvenirs separately - we thought that would work out fairly reasonable). Just so there are no misunderstandings later on...

Idontknownowwhat · 13/05/2026 19:52

So happy to see your updates OP!
Having peoplr join you at Disney is so much extra magic.
I took the inlaws, and this year took DDs boyfriend. I do things the cheaper end of the spectrum- cheap Idrive hotel for us! But its an amazing holiday to share.
Wishing you the best holiday, and hope youre doing MNSSHP!

TeaPot496 · 13/05/2026 17:38

Yikes. Not a lot of sisters would permit their sister to spend ££££s on them for a hol without feeling guilty the whole break! The portions are nothing like they used to be..

Why? For all we know op is a billionaire and the cost of Disney is a drop in the ocean to her. If for e.g. i won the lottery I would want to pay family members mortgages, take them on holiday etc etc and id actually be a bit annoyed if they said no and acted a martyr about it. No fun being rich if everyone around you is poor and won't do anything with you.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 13/05/2026 19:15

We did something similar and told a bit of a porky, said we won some money 😬. Worked a treat tho and they didn’t feel awkward, or didn’t act or anyway

Chilly80 · 13/05/2026 19:11

Xante · 13/05/2026 13:42

Just for my own nosiness how much would this cost?

Family of 4 for 2 weeks about £15k

PloddingAlong21 · 13/05/2026 19:03

Speak to your sister privately and let her manage the husband.

It’s awesome and most parents would not want to deprive their child of any experience out of pride. Let her handle the management of BIL

Storminthesky · 13/05/2026 19:01

What a wonderful thing for you to do, I hope you all have an amazing time OP!

bluejewels · 13/05/2026 18:32

That's very kind of you OP. Hope you all have a fab time!! (I'm jealous...... room for one more? 😂)

WonsWoo · 13/05/2026 18:29

I’m so pleased they have accepted and what a nice change to read about a lovely non toxic situation where someone is able to do something nice for their family without guilt and motives and drama.

I hope you all have a great time 😊

Web I took my sister and niece to Disney a few years ago for a week we did a meal plan

this was at Disney land Paris and we stayed at the main Disney Hotel
we had breakfast lunch and dinner inc
and lunch and dinner were character meals every time

also had snacks included

got bloody sick of mini mouse Interupting my meals by the end of the week
